hello help

im wanting to buy a gun for home defence. my gf and i are moving to indianaplis in a few months. we are from the country ive been around guns my hole life where she has not. ive been researching the area and it not a bad nieborhood just every couple years theres a few break-ins normal for any place you go.shes a nurse and im starting college and will be gone all day and working nights. she doesnt like the idea of having a gun. how do get her to warm up to the idea? ive been reasearching different handguns and ammo for a few days now. i know im getting the berreta 92A1 9mm that is coming out this month for recration. but not sure what i want for defence the 96A1 is a .40 but was thinking about a 1911 style .45 i like the feel of the metal better the the new synthic alloys and what not. any ideas for a handgun also are the safty rounds worth buying stopping power wise i really dont want a bullet that gunna stop when it hits without stopping the person first.or is it best to use the JHP? thanks for the help.

help with what? Sounds like you have a pretty good idea of what you're looking for. Try to fire all of them and just choose the one that feels the best. If you can't find a range that lets you test fire them, at least hold them all next to each other. I think almost all of us have shot or carried the 92. If you don't like polymer guns, then beretta, sig, ruger, some S&W's and any 1911 are a good start. Sigs are my favorite, but that’s just my preference. Everyone is different. As for your girl, let her send a few rounds down range. I bet you can get her to warm up a bit. Just show her that you're a responsible and safe gun owner, and that its for the protection of both of you. Put on pretty much any horror movie.... right when someone is getting chopped to pieces say.... "that shit wouldn't have happened if they had a beretta!"

safety bullets?

do you mean something similar to glaser safety slugs, or other low penetration rounds?

safety slugs

I'm not a huge fan, but if you live in an apartment with thin walls, or are worried about the kids in the house... they'll definately do the trick. Most good JHP's won't over penetrate if you hit your target, but if you miss, they'll still go through dry wall and such.

shotgun!! Is the Best Home Defence Weapon!! Loaded with 7 1/2 shot or 8 shot!
Won't over penatrate!! 2 maby 3 walls. Don't use 'slugs' or '00Buck'
Pistol, good one too.
Safe Bullet????
Are you going to live in an apartment? Neighbors accross the street??
A single projectile, can travle through several walls, go accross the street and ??????
But, what ever you have in your hand at the time of invation, is your best choise!
Please think about the different scenerio's where you will be living.
Out on the Farm/Ranch, no neighbors, A 12ga, loaded with slugs & 00 buck!!
Or a good reliable hand gun, .45-, .40, -9mm, with a good Hollow Pt. bullet, Hornady, Speer, Remington.
I wish you well in your Shopping.
Do more homework little Brother!
See if one of our Guys on the Site has something for sale.

Hello Josh & welcome,

Hello Josh & welcome,
Everything that everyone here has told you so far is true. My advice would be the same. Handle and shoot as many as you can & definitely continue with the homework.

The most important

thing...... is the gun for YOU or will she be there home with it alone at night. Then you most certainly will need to find a shop that will let you and her shoot a variety of weapons.Get one that is simple and easy for her to shoot. And really practice with her shooting and you not hogging range time.Taking a concealed carry class will give you both some skills that are essential to good weapon handling(basics) and some real life scenarios.I don't want to scare you but Indy has a number of gangs as most of your large cities do today. The main thing is to make HER comfortable with weapon handling, make it fun for her somehow. That's my opinion on the subject.Hope you find it helpful.Good luck in your move to the big city, hope you both do well.I'm kinda a neighbor,Kentucky. This site is a very friendly site, best one I have found, only been here a short time myself.Take care and welcome.

get a .380 concealment weapon( for her), and a 1911(for you). After she fires both, just act surprized! "Well, whoever is out will need the .380, whoever is at home has the .45!" It'll migrate to, "you take the .380, my purse has more room for the .45" Then, you get your gun next! .

the guns are for the both of us. we are moving to an apartment north side of indy. so thats what i was wondering about the bullets. tried to explain to her why i was doing all the reaseach on the guns ammo and laws. now she thinks im crazy lol. but the way i see it its better to have one and not need then need it and not have one. I was thinking about a .380 for her it was the first handgun i shoot with my dad. as for carry i dont think that theres a class in indiana just a few forms and finger printing.and $175 for a life time. and its a castle state.. thats always good. gunna do that while im waiting for the gun hold and take her to a range that does classes to get her comfortable with it. she will be there when i buy it so get one that she feels comfortable holding. thank you guys for the help
