if your willing to spend at least 500 try to find a used glock, im a sucker for the 23 gen 3 myself which is a .40 but you can never go wrong with a 19

another suggestion would be a SIGMA VE in a 40 which i think runs for about 300-350(not sure never bought one myself) then you could spend the extra cash on ammo or mags or something. not a bad gun for the price i thought the trigger was god awful but Ive been shooting for quite awhile. i think it would be a good starter gun

those sigmas have one of the worst factory triggers on the market... way too long. I had one in a past life, I actually traded it and a little cash for your beloved 3rd gen G23.

CZ 75 SP-01 9 mm.... hands down.

20 rounds of Corbon Cocked and Locked in the weapon with a back up 19 round mag full of Remington 147 grain UMC FMJ encase you need to punch through a door / car window / thick layered clothing.

9 mills ARE what I'd consider the best all around personal protection weapon because of being able to hit exactly where you aim with each shot and follow up shots are instant.

The CZ because it holds 20 rounds ( 19 + 1 ) and it is one of the most accurate hand guns on the market today.

At 25 yards I can blow a 2 inch hole in the head of an ICE target every time.

My second choice would be a Commander sized Springfield 45 or a Taurus 45 again because of the quality and prices.

CZ 75 sp01 or the CZ 75 B. You can get used ones on gun broker for under 500. Great pistols I have shoot one and love the build on an all steel gun they will last for ever and with a 9mm very little felt recoil. I love them so much my next semi auto buy will be a CZ..

What's up ebear?

Gotta agree with ebear.....for the price, the Taurus is hard to beat! If you have a budget of around $600, i'd have to go with a Glock!

get something in a .22

pistol, you sound like you are new to guns, nothing in your profile to go off of,you could do a lot of range shooting with a .22 pistol and use the same ammo for your Henry rifle, keep the shotgun loaded for home defense.

I recommend trying out

I recommend trying out several Glock models including the 19 as well as the Springfield XD models and the Taurus that was recommended above at the range. See which one feels most comfortable to you. All are great pistols.

Try out the Remington 230 grain UMC... Coming out of that 5 1/4 barrel it generates loads of energy and I LOVE that trigger. Nothing wrong at all in an 1/16 - 1/8 inch reset for fast as you can get double taps...

they are all good. carry a sw40ve and love it, have 2 taurus pt140 pro. i like the fact if you have a missfire ( which i never have had ) you can pull the trigger again and it will strike the firing pin without having to manually work the slide. and a pt945 and it is a tack driver. and the xd is an excellent weapon also.

I really like my Springfield XD-40. Also have a Browning Hi-Power for 20 years, great gun as well, but I like the .40 better. My buddies have Glocks which seem to be great as well, in .40.

re guy new to guns

if you go to any conceal to carry class, the first thing they tell you is (if you are going to shoot any one, shoot to kill) so with that being sed 9mm or smaller is not your friend the more over kill the better 40 s&m is ok not what i wold use but its ok, the 45 1911 is by far the best hand gun to get (BUT) make shure its not a cheep knok off of the real deal colt, kimber, make the best, if you want some other good hand gun go with the DE 40MAG or 357 good powerfull RNDS and the top of the A list is the taurse juge it shoots a 4-10 shot gun shell slugs or BBs wich ever you perfer. but in all the same go for the juge, there is no other gun that is better for home defence..

well ok

if you go to any conceal to carry class, the first thing they tell you is (if you are going to shoot any one, shoot to kill)

got to point out a few discrepancies, first off,in a ccp class they teach you to shoot to stop the threat, center mass, stop the threat, that means shoot until the perp quits whatever he was doing, which had better have been trying to cause you or someone else in your immediate vicinity gross physical harm.If you tell the judge you were shooting to kill you are asking to have a bad day in court.

that being sed 9mm or smaller is not your friend the more over kill the better
Now on the 9mm or smaller i would agree, although with the 9mm ammo selection can really level the playing field but you have come up with a novel idea that i would love to see implemented

40 s&m is ok not what i wold use but its ok

hats off to anyone that can round up 40 S&M to follow him around and act as a personal protection entourage, there would be enough whips and chains in this group to stop an elephant, well done sir!

if you want some other good hand gun go with the DE 40MAG or 357 good powerfull RNDS

again i will agree but a DE for concealed carry, who carries a DE?

Photobucket

Now i must take issue with the Taurus Judge being on the "A List for home protection", The 4-10 shell( with BBs) in any brand or configuration has failed the FBIs (minimum12 inch) penetration test, including Winchesters 410 shell made for the Taurus Judge, while the 45L overpenetrates to 17 inchs, thats equal to 4 trailers on either side of you! That ,my friend, is Overkill. The only home defense use for a Judge would be a windup and fastball into the "store" of some B&E with the entire gun, thats my humble opinion, welcome to the site, but your probably a one and gone poster anyway.

Nope I'm not a one and gone poster! I'm the type of guy who posts sits back and reads and trys to understand what everybody is telling/saying to me and taking in as much as I can. I am a long distance trucker who under stands alot about the "if I pull my gun out I intend on shooting to stop the threat" and I'll have a good day in court as I know A dead man don't talk! thanks and Have A Nice Day
Ps what can you tell me about a Taurus PT940 40sw
and do you know of any good books that will explane in english what the all the sw, apc, gap, means just so I can get a better under standing so I'm not a dumb ass when I go to a gun show or store and know what the f*ck someone is talking about.

"Conceal to carry" class. Hell, that's worse than "conceal and carry". Hey, a Desert Eagle 40 Mag (Not sure what that is) is almost as good as a revolver that shoots squirrel loads, which in turn is better than a 1911 (Might be on to something there).

The internet gives a voice to some people who should be mute.

Someone should back up that statement that a 22 lr is not useful in a dire time of need....

Stand there and let someone pump 6 - 9 rounds out of a revolver in under 10 seconds into you, then we can discuss the merits of it's lethality.

LOL

I would'nt go below a 32 and carry as big a gun as you can handle and lod it up with as much ammo stuff into it.

I carry a full size CZ SP-01 9 mm with 20 rounds in it and at least one extra 19 round mag on my person. Much of the time there is a Sig 230 on me also for doing one of those New York mag changes....

Two Open_Assit, Kershaws, my keys, thnigs laying around in the open and or my hands and feet, whatever they might have brought as a party favor...

I sure am glad I get to drive all over the east half of the country and understand what your talking about. but I can't carry any sort of part favors in the big truck execpt a tire thumper and a work knife. keys work great when used on the right body part ie: the eye balls, the tire thumper is a small baseball bat and is great at knocking a dork off the truck steps thru the window

Seems many want to piss on the 22 lr as if it is good for nothing more than plinking and wabbits. Yet it hs and still is in use as a defensive round in countries where carrying a weapon chambered in Military Calibers ( 9mm abd above ) is against the law...

I mean, yeah it is a small, fast hunk of lead, but is plays bumper pool once inside.

At 7 yards, how fast and how tight a group can one make with a 7 - 9 shot 22 mag?

I mean, the 22 is a valid option over having a weapon which the person is afraid to press the trigger in that time of need.

there are an awful lot better than the 22, even in restrictive places. The notion that the 22 ricochets around inside the body simply isn't true. Yes, it may do that inside the head if it isn't stopped by the skull and brain completely, but it doesn't enter the torso and start zinging around. The 22, 25, and 32 are all about as effective as a Tazer in stopping the threat, because they rely more on pain compliance than actual physical incapacitation. Now, would I want to get shot with a 22? Of course not. But if I had to choose between getting hit with that and one of the more conventional .38 spl/9mm and up rounds, the choice wouldn't take long to make.

Runs, the fact about the .22 bouncing around in the skull is why some people believe it to be an infamous round for up close assassinations. But I agree, although it can still be deadly, I wouldn't trust a .22LR to stop someone who is hopped up on drugs and is charging me. You could empty an entire mag out of a .22LR auto loader pistol and the guy would probably keep coming unless you just happen to be good enough in that situation to put a couple through his heart or brain, which even for the best marksman is hard to do if you have a crazed drug addict charging you with a knife or something.

It is definitely better than nothing, but I'm just glad I have the ability to carry a .45 if I so choose.

Get a Glock. 9mm, .40, .45 Whatever you can comfortably and accurately shoot.

They work. Period. The barrel is in-line with your arm (not way above like on a Beretta or Ruger). They're simple and easy to field strip. Moron-proof.

Most can be had for around $500.

I may get crap from the other guys here but. If your into cowboy guns. you should look into this.

http://www.gunsamerica.com/981137447/Guns/Pistols/Ruger-Single-Action-Re...

You have thay lever action gun this would be a great match. And if you new to shooting a single action revolver may be good for you. Also, you can shoot 9mm all day at the range practicing your trigger control and sight alignment then put in the 357 to use for home defense. again its a single action so your not going to be able to put a ton of rounds on a intruder. But if you hit that fucker anywhere with a 357 mag he is going to stop..
