Help Figuring out this rifle!
I'm new here, so first off Hello All!! Trying to help my father figure out an old rifle he has...here's what I do know (I'm doing this from a distance so it makes it harder to not have the gun in my hands to look at) 303 British and it's apparently missing the bolt and doesn't have the guts the magazine or it's missing the clip...not sure. Here are the markings he has found on the gun: On the band by the trigger guard: III* I think I've found that the SHT L.E is "Shortened something and Lee Enfield??? Any thoughts on these markings? There are some other markings near the chanmber as well: ANy help you can give me on this would be great in identifying the actual rifle so I can find the proper parts. Thanks and I really like the site so far!! |

Do you know anything abot the .303 Enfields? Maybe you can help TFred.
TFred
Thanks samD! I will patiently wait for more info just want to get an idea for him before he loses interest in getting the parts. I know someone on here will have the info I need so it's no big hurry! I see you are a few dozen clicks N of Old Mexico...this time of year it reminds me of the archery hunting (deer and Javi's) I use to do down there in good old AZ for a few years...I miss chasing them things around the desert! Thanks again!

if it is...
SMLE MK III (short magazine lee enfield)? the year 1918 is right for a SMLE MK III. it should have a detachable magazine... if its missing, Im sure you could find one fairly easily
you are saying it is...
the SHTLE which is a single shot british training rifle. it was an SMLE No. 1 Mk.III which was usually converted to .22LR. they left the original SMLE magazine on the rifle to catch the spend .22LR casings. I would definately double check the caliber. It may still be marked as ".303" but may have been converted to .22LR. If this is the case, you will need the original mag (if you want to catch the spent brass)

That is some interesting stuff taht you have floating around in that brain of yours.
Did you read the question from Jane re: air rifle and subsequent posts?
I think that basic zip gun recipe should be removed. What do you think?

I don't care much either way. It should probably be removed to avoid the heat. I would bring it to marv and quins attention and they can have the final say.
samD
I sent a message to Quint, but he is so slow about answering. If you can delete it. Just do it, we'll deal with it later. samD

I can only delete comments.... not articles and videos. Quin will have to do it

Thanks for the info everyone...the link you guys provided to that site...Wow...some very good and interesting info there! Looking at the markings photos on that site I do have some of the stuff narrowed down:
The crown with the GR should mean either a British proof mark or possibly it was from Ishapore Inspection, India.
The 1918...I think we all know what that means.
The SHT LE is short Lee Enfield.
The III* still working on this for sure. It's a number three I'm assuming but I found where that could mean it was SMLE...does that contradict the SHT LE??
Anyway, thanks again for the info so far...I'm still looking at it all!!

post a pic of the rifle if you can, it would help to identify it
TFred
Wish I could put a pic on but I don't have it in my possession. I do know for sure without a doubt that it is in .303 caliber though...I called him and had him make sure. So it wasn't converted to .22LR for training purposes. He also said that there is a hinge on the bottom of the magazine like there should be a floor plate there? Does this give any clues at all? Were some of these rifles converted over to detachable magazines? Thanks again...I feel like I'm gettting somewhere with this!!
