This is an excellent question, as I am in a house divided. My wife calls herself an 870 girl and I just bought a 590 with ghost ring sights and speedfeed stock. There really is no difference in the two as far as reliability, bu I will admit that the safety of the Remington is a bit easier. The Mossberg safety is more difficult to manipulate if you have a pistol grip. I have the straight stock, so the Mossberg's safety is in a good spot for ambidextrious use. Aftermarket parts and accessories are easily available for both, so the safety position is about the only practical difference between the two. just got back from looking....tell ya the truth i might go a little old school ...i really was'nt all that impresses with the new synthetic shotguns...I did how ever find a used wood moss- 500 12 guage...nice and heavy with a 18 " barrel with the breecher on it...i may buy it tomorrow, gotta sleep on it.

Wood or synthetic really doesn't matter when you're bussin' a cap on a nigga, but I like my speed feed stock. I'm thinking about looking for some lockbusters or other specialty rounds to keep in the buttstock.

yeah, but i like a little heft to my guns.....but i will say i did like the Remington 870 better than the Mossberg..they feel a little heavier.we'll see...but i do like the wood pump ...i looked at the pistol grips and the gun itself was much smaller in person than on the computer.

This may seem dumb, and I know there is no techical evidence to back me on this, but wood stocked shotguns tend to have a smoother action than synthetic stocks. I know all the metal parts are the same, but it just seems that way. I NEVER CLAIMED TO BE SANE, SO STOP YELLING, BILL!!!

But I did buy my buddy a "Fatty Patty" blow up doll as a gag Christmas gift. We blew it up at work and I put my platoon sergeant's PT uniform on her. He laughed, deflated her, and put her away. We reinflated her and were being idiots when the CO walked by and saw us. During the ensuing ass chewing, he used variations of the word "appalled" 11 times. He also stuttered and finally just said "This is the military police corps. ou just can't do that"! Priceless and totally worth the ass chewing. I wish we didn't have to destroy her, I would have taken her to my barracks room. WHAT!? I was single and have never used a blow up before. Don't judge me.

I used to have the 500 cruiser, but had to sell it because I needed the cash. Now the only mossy I own is the 835 ulti-mag, which I love. I think mossberg makes a great product for the money. The 870 is great as well, just a little more pricey... That said, the 870 TAC desert recon is the next shotty on my list but the last one I saw was north of $800.
ybear, you can't go wrong with either. just get the one that fits your needs.

I admit that even if you were been born in Antarctica and lived your days in a snow cave and you have never had any contact with people ever, you'd still know you're in trouble when you hear that slide get racked on a 12 ga, but I never understood the appeal of scaring someone before killing them. My shotgun, as well as every other gun except the Remington 700 all have rounds in the chamber, ready to go.
