things is a good first aid kit and all the beer you can pack.
ecaman
With fully equipped and well stocked kitchens and bathrooms, a good bedroom (or 2 or 3), internet connection, radio and TV, and enough, and adequately powerful firearms and ammo to repel invaders.
I don't go camping - can you tell?
HKBauer
So you go to the Holiday in to camp? LOL
CharlesW
I am a civil war reenactor and our camps are
required to be of the 1860s period. That means
no Coleman Lanterns , cook stoves, caned food
or anything they didn't have back then.
You should see some of the home made ice chest
and things we come up with built inside of foot
lockers and ammo boxes. Got to have some place
to put the beer LOL
I have froze my but sleeping on the ground in
Dec and Jan. We actually had one guy die
when we had an ice storm come in and he didn't
know how to keep dry.
Fellas that's camping !!!!
The South Gonna Rise Again !!!!!
HKBauer
Thats my kind of camping!
Ranger Sarge
cool.I love anything Civil War.Basically I'm a big American history buff, read any literature I can get my hands on.I love going to old battlefields and museums.I love traveling to South Carolina,Mississippi and Georgia(actually the whole south).I feel another Civil War could be in your future sad to say.
ecaman
I prefer Hilton, Four Seasons, etc.
samD
Hedonist all the way!

Meanwhile, in November we're going to Israel, Jordan, and Egypt.

Reaper308

Bigshot Nobody
wanna stay friends aye
Bigshot Nobody
I've camped all over creation myself,,, most all my life.
Can do the same as most here. Hit the woods with just a pocket knife.
Snare dinner and fry it up on the folding shovel.
Reaper308
is one of my hobbies. We go at least once a month. The Rim lakes area of the Mogollon Rim is one of our favorites. I've taken several survival classes from a retired Air Force instructor who taught survival skills to pilots in case they were downed. We've had to spend days in sub zero temps during the winter in the white mountains, living in shelters that we made from our surroundings. Talk about cold (but I do have a warm winter bag). Starting fires in rainy conditions without matches/lighter was a F'n pain! Anyway, now days we mainly camp close to my truck. I only pitch a tent if I really need to. Mainly just throw my bag in the bed of the truck... if its raining like this last weekend, I'll just hang a tarp to cover the bed.
The only necessities that I require are...
1. a 12ga. with slugs
2. my G20 with 200 gr. bear tooths
3. Lots of beer
4. a bottle of whisky or tequila
I also prefer a chair to sit in, some skynard or cash to jam to, and some good dogs to cook. Horseshoes are good to bring along too.
CharlesW
and instant heat in a bad situation. Also
I always carry some steel-wool and a 9volt
battery. find anything dry for some kindling
and touch the steel-wool with the battery and
instant fire. You probably knew that though
Vaquero
Damn man, Sounds perfect in that country. I bet it gets so quiet you could go nuts.
Reaper308
unfortunately the class requirements wouldn't let us use the ol steel wool and battery combo. I have used it before though. We had to create friction by rubbing sticks. A major pain in the ass when everything is wet! Finding dry tender was the hardest part. I've never used sterno. It would have been considered cheating in the class, but would probably make things a lot easier now days.
Vaq- yeah we usually try to find a spot pretty far out. We have a few favorites where you don't hear anything but coyotes and grey wolves at night. Oh yeah, mogollon monster (sasquatch) too! Thats why I need the shotty!
CharlesW
split some wood until you get to the heart
which is usually dry and do your friction
thing there. Yes I have used a string on a bent
stick to make a bow and man that saves some work
Vaquero
I gotta hand it to ya, thats hard core.
I'm impressed.
CharlesW
camping can be fun no matter what the conditions
Reaper308
during the classes... no ax. Now days, hell yes. I was just talking with my brother-in-law this last trip telling him that I'm bringing a chain saw next time. Sweating to saw and chop fire wood gets old after a while. Its hard to enjoy your beer when you're out of breath! I wish I could just tell the woman to go collect wood while I sit in my chair and drink my beer, but I'd end up with a black eye
CharlesW
out of pvc pipe and covered it with
burlap. It serves as a water jug also.
Reaper308
I can picture that. Now thats hard core! I cheated and bought my gregory pack at REI. Your way would have been cheaper!
HKBauer
I would be interested in seeing that
Vaquero
I figured you woulda jumped in here. Talk to us Padre.
greg az
When you two were coming down interstate 17 i think you said you stayed at Camp Verde.. That's due west of the rim on 260.. If you would have gone east there you would have driven over to the Strawberry, Payson area.. Same elevation as we are here in Peeples Valley so same weather.. But populated with Elk and Antelope that we don't have..
Camping.. That's one of lifes grand pleasures .. no matter how you do it.. I backpacked, and bike packed for decades.. With my back now its gone a bit more civilized.. but its all the same just a bit more creature comfort now
CharlesW
to tote your gear LOL
How ya been ?
Vaquero
If you'da bothered reading my post when I returned from AZ, you'd know Strawberry Hill and Payson were the best drive of the whole trip.
LOL! Hows Gary? I know you were busy with him about then.
luckybychoice
1. loin cloth
2. Bowie knife
3. war paint
that's the basics,i can get all the rest from the empty campsites i come into, hehehe!
Vaquero
I had to give that up! The cactus and mesquite thorns just proved too much for me.
southernfella07
a .22, SOME AMMO-ITS CHEAPER
a TENT- agin to save money
a BEER- to forget that you were to cheap to pay for a camper
CharlesW
it's hard to carry a rented camper on
your back like you can a shelter-half.
Shelter-Half ???? damn I only have half a tent
greg az
Sorry for being slow, i just hung up from talking to him..which is a big deal, he's strong enough he just made his FIRST phone call.... I was on till just a min ago.. He's got that hospital fog thing going on, and talking pretty weak, but for sure will make it now.. Going to a rehab facility down in Sierra VIsta.. Funny he wants a goal, and we were just discussing a fishing trip to Lake Roosevelt before this winter, and i come back to this camping thread..meant to be!!
Vaq.. Buddy i didn't see that post of yours, and yep that was when i was gone, but will check it out..
Dubya.. Doing great guy.. Actually thats about a half ass fib, as the G-kids were up this weekend and one of the little snots gave me a sore throat.. First one of those for years.. Maybe i need a cold beer..
Lucky.. were you one of those Marines that chased the Naval flight crews around durring SERE school..
samD
Glad to hear it.
Also need a little prayer for my neighbor, Fred Sampson, WWII Vet and Japanese POW.
They broke both his arms by tying them behind his back and lifting him off the ground. He was a Canadian Soldier 18 yrs old, was made Sgt when his was killed then Lt. when his was killed. Only 3 or 4 from his Co survived in Borneo, I believe. Antway he is in a Hospice, dementia and heart probs, like 2-3 days left. Thanks for your service Fred.
Vaquero
And ThankYou for your service!
greg az
That's with the possible exception of Reap, and Schuy (who has lousy timing) and Runs (suppose the gov talked to dave?) ..
I just got back from reading that post on ebears tat, reading all the posts from that and others the past two days.. were just flat strange.. man i love you guys.
Later all, im gonna go drink a beer (purely medicinal) and watch the news..
Reaper308
ranaway! I think he's at gitmo
greg az
The greatest generation is dying on us guys.. Sams neighbor fred's story is repeated all across this nation as that generation (a 20 year old in 44 would be 86 today) passes away..
Dear Lord we pray that you are with each and everyone of these Men and Women, now, as thier heads hit the pillow tonight, and when they leave us.. Please give them the reward they deserve.. God bless them all...
samD
Much appreciated...
Vaquero
Another multipage post, I'm sitting in a power outage, on my blackberry. Fucking trackball is cramping my thumbs!
Vaquero
I guess we all want a do over now and then! Greg, thanks.
Somebody give me 40 lashes.

Lyle
Its a lot differn't than the other voices in my head.
Shit, I just heard ROD Serling!!!!!
greg az
and sorry i have to leave ya, but i will be back in bout 20 min.. Gloria has really been there for me during this whole deal with bub, shes taken care of so many things, and the only thing she asks is that i go to bed with her (laughing thinking what ebear would say to that) ..
Speaking of Ebear, old Lyle's comment above about Rod Sterling got me laughing as hard as ebear normally does.. Anyway back soon troops, will see ya all soon as my baby dozes off..
HampsterW
I have had my share of 'shit heals' so it really warms my heart to hear a statement like that, a good woman is damn hard to find.....I am heading to bed soon as I need to work to 'prop up' SS for you 'monkeys' (sorry Clint)....You guy's are GOOD friends....GNight!
