I am rmgunsmith on this site. In 2004 I started my own gun smith shop and have been working on guns and loading custom ammo ever since. I grew up in Western Colorado and started hunting when I was 12 years old. I have been around firearms all of my life. If I can help out anybody new to the shooting sports please drop me a note. Remember, the 2nd amendment is our duty to protect and cherish to preserve our freedom. Dan |

How Much is a Colt Single Action Army Worth Mine is Original.Any Idea?
LLE
the model number and serial number, to first determine what generation it falls into. Then you need to give him a description of "condition" using the NRA grading system [which can be looked up using google].
Snake
The gun is Blank. No number at all unless its under the wooden handle. But it hasent been dissasembled in 40+ years. Im afraid to take it apart. As for condition its great not excellent but great.
LLE
There has to be a serial number, unless someone removed it. I do not remember a location under the grip panels. Ask rmgunsmith, Dan where to look. The NRA grading system is a better description, than just "great". LOOK it UP!!
greasypaws
will not apply prior to 1968!
LLE
That is not my understanding: SAA Revolvers: 1873 to 1940-
Serial Nos. 1 thru 357,000
Snake
Are you saying my SAA has no Serial Number?
greasypaws
i am refering to the gun control act of 1968,where from then on all guns required a serial number as per the ATF
LLE
the wisdom of the AGED!! Your SAA has a serial number, UNLESS it was removed. If that happened there might be surface evidence of it.
samD
You inherit it, buy it or find/steal it? LOL
Has to be a number unless it is ancient!
rmgunsmith
Snake,
As mentioned earlier by others, the Colt SAA have always had serial #'s. Take off the grips and look on the metal frame. It has to be there somewhere.
Thanks,
Dan
ebear
i would think you have to have the gun to see the serial number
Snake
All right Im Lookin at the gun now and I DONT SEE NO NUBERS AT ALL!!!!!!!!!. I have no clue where else too look.
ebear
sometimes those nubers will do that.
samD
for Numbers. Nubers may be under your wifes shirt.
ebear
mabey if you rub ice on them , the nubers would be more visable.
Snake
Im Gonna PRETEND I DIDNT READ THAT!!! LETS GET BACK TO THE SUBJECT.
ebear
could the numbers have been buffed out? mabey some work was done to the gun before you got it.
Snake
Its possible. I got it from my grandpa. I just called him on the phone he said and i quote" Son I Never Saw Any Type Of Numbers On It". So how would i go about geting a new ID Number For it?
ebear
I know how to make things illegal,,but not on how to make them legal again....sorry....ask greasypaws
undeniable
I'm not so sure I would go get any sort of I.D. # for it. Thats just me though. Thats what I call registration and I try to stay away from that. Sorry about the 2 cents interruption. Carry on gents.
ebear
snake mabey your grampa is showing signs of senility and he does'nt remember using the gun to assasinate a leader of a small village in Poland as a gun for hire, and the gun was made especially for that mission.........hence no serial number......just a theory.
Snake
Then how do i find out how much its wort?
ebear
go to the auction sites like gun broker. look for a simuler model and see what price they are going for..or some how get your grandpa to tell you which organization paid him to kill, And then you can blackmail them into somekind of hush money...........but i would try the my first suggestion and see what results you get.But if you go with option #2 use paper cuts and salt on grandpa.....he'll talk eventually
Snake
Im gonna go for the Hush Money
ebear
snake....i knew you would
Snake
Wait I get it! Im Sneaky Snake. All I can find is the first Generation SAA (Mine) Is close to $4700 American. I woul have thought it would be more!
LLE
it is a First generation, if you have no serial number??
ebear
STILL NOTHING TO SNIFF AT
Snake

Hope you like dogs as well..............some here don't care much for us dog lovers.
Schuyler
like my dog right there. I just don't like dogs who attack my dog. Even then, they don't deserve to die. I just Mace 'em. Pisses 'em off. Pisses the owner off, so I just say, "Eat me." My dog would never attack anyone--unless, of course, you go near his dishwasher--then it's a whole nother story. If you've excess fur, do not go near the dishwasher. That is HIS, period. It might have a spoon that needs licking. Seriously, he's scary around the dishwasher.
rmgunsmith
Yes I love dogs. We have two, a white male Labrador & Blue Merle Female Sheltie.
ebear
IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW YOU LOVE THE DOG
runawaygun762
I have a miniature dacshund and a miniature pomeranian. They are two of the girliest sissy dogs around, but I also have guns and about ten thousand rounds of varying caliber, so GO AHEAD AND MAKE FUN OF ME!!!! Hmm. Not very intimidating online, is it. Oh well.
Snake
Are you Talkin about me?
LLE
If the piece has no serial number, and no other markings of any kind, you cannot know for certain that it actually is a Colt. Does it not even have a patent pending/date mark or an engraved horse, or a horse on the grip?? How long did your Gramps have it, before he gave it to you? Remember, there are replicas that are so good, that Colt parts will fit them.
