So here I am one night relaxing and I find the video of the High-point c9, I will admit the video left somthing to be desired, I mean just post a picture of the darn thing, yet all of the people posting that it is worthless, or undesirable, or even worse that that would like to be shot with it..... really? Now I will admit it is a horribly less than attractive designed weapon, all hi point are, but thats the point, are you going to ask an attacker to stop so you can show off the fine details engraved into your 1911 .45 or are you more likely to just shoot the idiot with it. A weapon needs only be "pretty" to put in a case, so you could even argue that you shouldnt fire them because they are in fact art. I have no Hi-Point firearms in my collection because I dont have much of a collection, I have a weapon for a reason, be that reason for carrying concealed, home defense, or hunting. if I didnt find my smith and wesson 915 for 200 bucks I would have got a Hi-Point 9mm. I have freinds and co-workers that have them and are very pleased, one co-worker even used his 9mm Hi-Point when he was confronted by a wild hog to great effect. That all out of the way, think about what makes a good weapon. Will it fire every round properly, will it jam if some dust gets stirred up a few states away? You need a reliable, safe firearm, one that will not become a brick just because you didnt oil it an hour ago. Basically the idea is put lead down range, you need a gun that is accurate, reliable, easy to handle, and affordable (lets face it a colt 1911 .45 its awesome for self defense but do you want to spend the same on a bang around gun as you would on a decent boat or that you put down on your house) The Hi-Point line of weapons are made here so you are supporting america, they have lifetime warranties, are chambered in popular and effective rounds, and are easy to use, functional, and for a couple hundred bucks you get a gun that can sit in the truck, or on your side come rain or shine, cold or hot weather. Not only a pistol but you can get very effective carbines, both fun at the range, and practical for self defense or hunting. Just because a gun was made by colt, biretta, or smith and wesson, does not make it a good gun, it wont make them bad guns either. I dont claim to be an expert on firearms, just from experiance, Hi-Point, and tarus for that matter are excellent guns, and priced much lower than comparable weapons from other manufacturers. What do you think, good and bad of the Hi-Point and Taurus lines Im just doin what I can with what I got.- burt gummer |

Taurus now makes some great guns. They started off making inexpensive but serviceable copies of S&W, but have really gotten into quality and innovation in a big way.
I have no personal experience with Hi Point firearms. As you said, they're Godawful ugly, but a lot of guns have been ugly and were of good quality.
HampsterW
Taurus used to be the 'scourge' of the industry but now they make some damn fine weapons, at a reasonable price I might add. I own a Taurus TCP380 in stainless that has served me well as a backup to my Walther PPS!
HKBauer
My experiance with hi point is limited, but in researching the brand it seems that the quality is really hit and miss. i personally do not like the feel of the Hi point it is not comfortable to me therefore I shy away from them, also the love it or hate it revues tend to steer me towards the Taurus, Springfield, Glock etc. higher in price but very few complaints across the board. Just my .02.
Reaper308
as R3bauer said, their quality control is hit and miss. I've had many FTF and FTE issues with Hi Points. If I'm relying on something to save the lives of my family, I need to know it will feed and fire properly EVERY time as you stated. My experiences with Hi Points don't give me the confidence that they will, not to mention the heavy bulky feel and awkward balance point and sloppy trigger (just my opinion). I have heard many people who are pleased with their Hi Points and have never had any issues with them... but others who have had experiences like mine. Like I've said before, I'd keep one as a tackle box gun, but nothing more.
southernfella07
thats what I was trying to get at, its a gun that you dont care if it gets a little beat up as long as its accessible and the being bulky could pay off, if you run out of ammo, you have a hammer to stay in the fight :)
TXLUCKYGUY
I have a 9mm Hi-Point carbine currently; it broke after only a few rounds and it'd cost more to send it to the gunsmith than I paid for it (mag floorplate broke off, mag follower frizzed/burred, trigger return spring broke). It's sitting in the closet where I hope it will turn into Gummi Bears, laundry detergent, or anything else I can actually use.
In addition to that I've seen FTE, FTF, slamfires, and other problems with Hi-Points of various calibers at ranges I've taught at. They may be inexpensive, but in my experience they're very poor quality and unreliable. If that price point is attractive or necessary, then there are numerous surplus police and military handguns and rifles to be had, of proven design and reputable manufacture (J&G Sales has a bunch....38sp wheelguns, centerfire bolt guns, ComBloc compact 9x18s, etc.)
luckybychoice
on weapons this way,for self defense/home defense i want a weapon that has gone thru testing by the military and is used by the military,in a caliber the military uses.Rifle, pistol,or shotgun. These are what i consider"top shelf",Springfield,Colt,Remington,SIG,Glock,Beretta,BHP,not a complete list but you get the idea.I'm not saying there isn't failures in these, but i am saying there are LESS failures in these than weapons that have not gone thru the government wringer.
Then there's the"settle fors",as in "I'd like a Kimber but i'm gonna settle for a Taurus,Ruger, etc. These are good guns, lifetime warranties, good price,but....they just haven't passed muster, now the government testing can be questioned all day long for it's validity, but it is rigorous and detailed.Every manufacturer will tell you they have run there guns out to hell and back,so "settle for"what they tell ya.
Then there's guns that are just kind of"guns",single actions, cheap guns, tackle box guns, glove box guns, safe queens,BU guns, guns in odd calibers(Remington 221 fireball anyone?),just an assortment of guns, some make gun nuts drool with lust( Taurus Judge, what an overated POS that is),some are just weird( COP .357).All seem to shoot in this category, and break, and most gun nuts know what's reliable and what's not,but when you get back to the question of what your gonna stake your life,or someone else's life on you had better be sure that you've done your homework, got"murphy" as far away as possible, trained and trained some more....you get the drift.
manu2014
Used to hunt woodchuck with a friends XP100. It was a ball to shoot. Pun intended.
ohioshooter
aint no thing wrong with hi point it breaks they six it free and 99% they send you a few free mags i have 3 hi points they all shoot as well as any other ruger, s w colt i have ,personally i have found out most people that dont like them never shot them and are just gun snobs
luckybychoice
your "go to" gun for an extended engagement, shooting multiple rounds at multiple targets with them shooting back?IMO it kind of takes the fun out of the gunfight if your weapon stops working, how many rounds do you figure you have put thru one of your hipoints?
big pops
i own the whole line of high points and i have found that to make these weapons work you must and that's a but must put 500 rounds down range once you do this to these firearms they change its weird i know but once 500 rounds are throw them they turn into a fine shooting fire arm . my favorite is the first won they came out with it was all silver slide with black frame really nice but i like all that line they r with it and fun to use but 500 rounds is a must .
ohioshooter
ya know gram used to say the more you stir shit the more it stinks

I like some of the comments above. I'm no financial powerhouse myself, so I'm all about saving money. That being said, I also like nice things. First off, the HI-points are cheap for a reason, because they are crap. Currently, I only own one pistol which happens to be a W. German Sig P-226. When I first had my heart set on getting a P-226 I was discouraged by the current prices, but lo and behold, I actually found the perfect one for much less than $500. I can afford a <$500 Sig, but not a >$600 one, so I guess I got lucky. So can you if you keep your eyes peeled and set back your money ahead of time.
So, ask yourself this question. If you had to take your pick of handgun choices for self defense, wouldn't you want something you could absolutely trust your life with? (or the lives of friends or family possibly) As mentioned above, there is no perfect pistol but machining tolerances and good quality control can assure that a product is solid. Of course price will reflect the amount of QC that a company has to put into their product. Someone might even say, "well isn't at least some gun better than no gun?" I would think that it possibly might, but let me quickly paint a scenario just to play devils advocate. Let's say you have your trusty Hi-point on your person concealed and you encounter an armed robber/mugger/whatever in a situation that you now consider justifiable in employing your weapon. You present, take aim, squeeze yet nothing happens because your gun has a higher chance of failure than needs to. Well, now your mugger there sees you present your weapon so he considers the situation to have escalated to the point that he shoots or stabs you before you can get off a shot at him. So what could possibly happen if you were unarmed completely? Could you simply have been robbed and let go? Maybe, no one could possibly know, but I ask myself all kinds of these questions. This has led me to believe that yes, my life and the lives of whoever I'm with are worth much much more than $300 or so that I saved on a pistol.. They deserve the best I can afford, and I bet yours do as well. But since I'm not here to bash any ones system, I just simply ask that folks ask themselves the serious questions, take an honest inventory, and decide for yourself.

Dude why dont you use your name instead of of hiding in the weeds making comments.
Reaper308
he did use a name... unfortunately, he didn't play by the rules and was banished from the site. When that happens, you're comments become anonymous.
Nitris
Hi-point is cheap well as many have said there crap. Yes I did buy one, yes it's junk. Buy a CZ-82 there cheap BUT military grade. All weapons I buy are either police or military grade/tested/used by.............etc.
hank1975
must be nice to afford high dollar stuff the rest of us make due with what we have my hi points are more trustworthy than my friends glocks rugers and bersa every time we shoot they all have atleast one jam but I notice that I take better care of my mags and do tweek them from time to time
hank1975
and if sigs are so great why are the pawn shops and used gun sites full of em!
luckybychoice
glue sniffer or paint?
HampsterW
my kid has air soft guns that are more dependable than a Hi point. High dollar guns? What price do you put on your life Hank? There ain't no fucking way that I am going to trust mine and my family's lives to a $100 gun, Walther yes Hi point no.
Ebear
is a perfect nite stand weapon.....why? because if by any chance you do shoot an intruder..lawfully or not kiss that gun good-bye. Id rather lose a 150.00 gun than a 600.00 gun to our shitty court system any day.I HAD A HI-POINT 9MM..AND IT REALLY WAS'NT THAT BAD.I did sell it , but to tell the truth..i kinda wished i had kept it..
HampsterW

Ebear

Larry Wagner
Don't know about the Hi-Point's but I have 2 Taurus revolvers a 605. 2 1/4" hammerless 357 & a 608, 4" 8 shot compensated 357. both super sweet, hundreds of rounds through each with no problems at all. Yes they used to be absolute junk, but no more.
From what I hear about the Hi points, I WOULD NOT, bet my wife's life, or mine on them regardless of price.
hank1975

HampsterW
there were no deals......Holy hell, every time I go the prices get higher and higher, some are more than MSRP. I had my eye on a Glock 38 but I just couldn't get past the fact that it was puke green, the price was fair though I guess, it was 3 and some change.

HampsterW
if you have deep pockets, I saw a nice Barrett .50 that I could hit fleabear with all the way in Hellinois....LOL! All it takes is 10K for the rifle and a few grand for the optics (not included), I would be surprised if the threw in a mag.
ACE
U and a few others on here are the "guys with all the guns", and the $ for said guns. I gotta better chance of getting kicked outta hell, than buying a sweet piece of machinery like that... Id love to!! It'd be freaking awesome. U let us know when U get one. K???
greg az

tellmenotherone
I got the .45 pistol for a beater in my truck to save on my 1911, took it out and tried it hell for 200.00 its a disposable one anyways...after feeding a hell of a diet thru it including handloads I wouldnt feed thru any "quality" gun... 1911 is still in the truck and hi point is on bedside table..since then got the 9mm carbine also, waiting for the .45 carbine to come out too. with thier warranty I will get all of them I can.
Lyle Hutchins 1
Hi-Point's make exellant paper weights!!! Save yer money, and buy a real pistol. You'll be happy you did!!
Only reason you won't, is cause yer like one of my son-in-laws, yer a tight ass. Spend the money, and
buy a real weapon! Remember, You get what you pay for.
Lyle
BtheKid1881
This was my first gun ever. In my opinion it is not worth even the 200 dollars you pay for it. It jams on every other round it seems like. I have tried different mags and different ammo. It isn't anything about the way the high point looks but it is how it performs. that is what guns are all about. Yeah It is always nice to find a pretty gun. But I would only trust my life to a gun that will shoot every time you pull that trigger. No exceptions. That is why I would never recommend a high point to anybody. My father in law wanted to buy it from me for home protection and I would not sale it to him because of the reliability. I told him to go get a Taurus for maybe 60 dollars more and you would have a better more reliable gun all around.
fixxer72
Expensive doesn't always mean the best. One of the larger sheriff departments in the surrounding area just bought H&k 45 ACPs for all the deputies. Probably the most expensive hand gun they can buy. Well these expensive hand guns seem to have a problem of jamming when used when used under a high rate of fire. Damn....hold on buddy don't shoot my expensive gun just jammed on me.
Reaper308
Do you have any evidence supporting this? Every manufacturer will have its bad apples, I'm just wondering how a whole batch of HK's will experience the same problems (especially after their rigorous field testing and quality control).
fixxer72
No not first hand I don't. Just talk at the local gun shop where several of the deputies frequent.
john kelley
Dad has a hi point NEVER JAMMED of course he doesn't shot it much and a Nazi about cleaning guns
runawaygun762
a high rate of fire? And what is high rate of fire for a Sheriff's deputy? Based on my observation of cops at the range, I'd guess a round about every minute and a half or so. Tee hee hee.
Ishootdaily
where I live do not shoot even though they are allowed 50 rounds a month here. Those that do not, all rush in right before Re-Qual's and attempt to learn all over again, but just enough to pass. You have to be Qualified to Carry or you are not going on the street and that is the ONLY reason they do it.
Fucking ridiculous if you ask me, damn life depends on your skills. All of them not just shooting, but to think that they are allowed to just blow off the one skill which is going to make the hugest difference is unconscionable.

High Point is a decent boat gun, you don't give loose much if it falls into the Ocean or the Salt Water eats it...
