Hog hunt

I recently found out of a great opportunity. When Lake Alan Henry was built by the city of Lubbock they created a wildlife are for the native species displaced by the flooding of the canyon.
Feral hogs have overrun this area. Hunting is cheap with a permit and get all ya want is the case for the hogs. Thousands of acres and an endless supply of "game". I have met the wildlife biologist in charge and they are almost begging for hog hunters. I'm going after turkey season and will keep yall posted. BTW the pic of "off the caprock" is from the wildlife area. : )

Hog Hunt

Vaq- How far from Tampa, driving in days, I sure liked the last one, and would love to try some long range kills, even with the SR522lr with suppressor and hightened velocity on ammo, as they claim. Don't want to crawl around to much again, but would like to try some different weapons of choice, if you don't mind I mean. JLC

Let me know if you head that way and I will see about going with you, split the gas and stuff.

2 hard days or 3 average days of driving from Tampa to here. I wouldn't count on a lot of long range shot except from a blind. You can sure bust some brush though. (it seems like it all has thorns!) Holler if ya head this way. Hell no I don't mind!

Hog Hunt,

John, according to Google maps, just entering the cities as start and destination, yeilds just about 23 hours and 20 minutes driving time. This would not account for stops for gas nor if you stopped for a night. Lubbock is about another hour or so NNW of Post. Just stay on the highway and wave at Vaq as you go through Post. LOL. Seriously, that would be cool. By the way, if you should manage to get out here for that. bring long sleeved cotton shirts, and buy your drinking water. The water in Lubbock is ok as far as I know, but lots of the water in the outlying areas is contaminated from saltwater being injected into some of the oil wells. The city water here in Odessa is too hard. Plays hell on coffee makers. We use bottled water around here for drinking purposes. "Welcome to West Texas, where the wind blows and the oil flows!"

I know if you drove down here and we flew out of Sarasota we could get a direct flight round trip. Any meat could probably be donated out there if your not wanting to bring any back. I'll throw the AK74 and the 308 in a travel case. I'm sure ammo for both would not be hard to find in Lubbock.

I really loved the Texas nights this time of year, though you gotta keep an eye out for Scorpions in some places...

Lubbock airport is a "Small hub airport" and only serviced by four airlines. They are American Eagle, Continental, Delta and Southwest Airlines. I think the Continental and Delta services are via one of their smaller lines like Continental Connection and whatever Delta calls their minor league carrier. The best I can figure out from looking at the maps is that you will have a stopover in Houston, Austin, or Dallas if you try to fly out. Midland Airport is much the same situation. And I don't know about Abilene. I do know that from Odessa to D/FW is about 5 1/2 to 6 hours driving (about the speed limit). Also Snyder, a small town (about 10-15,000 population) roughly, half way between Abilene and Lubbock is about the same amount of time. Snyder is about 30-45 miles (I think) SSE of Post.

I m dumping two G's on some equipment for Holster making. But I can still get away for a week or so. Have to find out if JC is able to and when, then work it out.

I think flying would be best, I took Southwest out there when I went to Denver City TX to do a Communications Network by contract for the Co2 plant ( I think it was called). They pumped compressed air and something else into the ground to keep up the pressure at the pumping stations (pump jacks). All of them have a radio link back to the plant for services and tracking needs.

I lived in Houston for a year at one time when my wife and I split up. Houston was ok, but I ended living with a 24 year old model and it was like having a friends bitchy 10 year old little sister around 24/7 which you wanted to hold your tongue with...

Pretty, smart, whiny bitch....

Thought she could say, do or attempt anything and then just my bones and everything would be forgotten and ok fine afterwards...

Freaked her out first time she heard the word "NO" even more so when she realized I meant it.

lol

Isd and guys

Damn computer is acting all weird or it is the sight. But that would be cool If we went together, ISD and even meet up with anybody else. But flying is a major pain in the ass for me and weapons. I do not know what they do with the weapons? It is taking me forever to talk and send with this thing. The flying I have no problem with, it is all the Metal plates and pins inside me that sets the damn machine off, and last time, had to go into a room with a broad no less, thank god for ugly on her or it really would have pissed me off. But had to get down to skivies, and asked if she wanted to check for pecker tracks or skidmarks. That was 5 years ago I think. But I need something to go after. ISD a few of my friends,, one has a tomatoe farm in ruskin, and the other 2 grow strawberries and cabbage & whatever, in plant city. They keep telling me to come out and sit on tailgate of truck at 1/2 hour before sunrise or just around 7:00 pm now that it is light later and try to pick some off, while they dig everything up, like armadillos. One guy tells me he has shot for 15 minutes straight from a distance, and just like the Buffalo of old if you kill the damn thing right off it just goes down without a squeal, and even if it does squeal the others come back after ten minutes. I really want to try it, hunting in luxury! I will write your inbox when we can go and the particulars, you are pretty close to me and there farms. That would be neat, cool and great all wrapped up. One guy told me when the new ethenol plant goes up in riverview they are gonna switch off to corn only and are thinking of a bounty on the little bastards that screw up the young corn. The best of two worlds, killing hogs and getting paid for it. You In ?

Oh and last night with the computer and the play with that idiot preachers wifes remarks, I appologise to you guys for just getting pissed and thinking I will just hide and shut up again for 40 more years if possible, which ain't, I will die the sooner is better for me. I got big shoulders and can carry anything but that kind of remarks after 39,40 years. I just cannot seem to shake it that people still think that way. I mean 30 years ago when my kids friends would see me in the pool, they would ask, what happened to you, because of the scars on my chest and back and legs. I would just say I got in a car accident. They were kids and lying did not bother me for them. But I stopped beach and pools even here because of the looks and shitheads asking dumb questions. Then you guys build me up and then I fall right back down again with a stupid remark, from a stupid person. But it isn't going to ruin my life anymore, you guys showed me that. Randy, ISD, Vaq, LBC. You all sayed some great things to me about that and you know who you are. I know who I am and what I had to do, and that is the way it is. I will ship those clips Randy and whatever on gun, let me know where that's all.

Wifes getting new computer, so I can use this one more and my stuff, and also still have 400.00 left from pig kill. What do you guys think, pistol, new quickdraw holster, scope for my 45 Henry Big Boy, or save for trip later with ISD, or hope they put on a bounty on ferrill hogs soon and see what my supercharged 22lr from germany actually drops them with a peep site, at a hundred yards and no noise to them. I love these choices, but am open for more. lay it on me. John

I know, I just get down about it for some damn reason, and it always comes when I start to feel good about myself by talking to you guys and all. I mean I have no desire to live threw it again and talk about it even. I notice the older I get, the easier it does get to brush those types off. But when you lay your head on a pillow everynight for 39,40 years and wake up with sweats or your crawling on your knees and your wife has you in a headlock so you won't run into a wall. Then you wake up and feel like a jackass and wonder why your wife stayed with you all these years? Even on the Hog Hunt, where we slept, the first night we all said almost the same time, nobody has a knife or gun right, and don't worry if you hear me talk or yell or walk around. So it is a curse that you live with forever and I guess you just face up to it and go another day, right. So like I said, I am really gonna try not to talk about that stuff anymore, and what I hear let go out the other, right. Thanks Jay for the concern, youguys are the best on here. John

hey,i understand some of that.i dont have post traumatic stress disorder or anything but i do sleepwalk, talk in my sleep and even fight people who try to wake me up because they are always zombies or monsters or crazy crackheads trying to kill me,till i wake up and realize its my wife or friend ive been throwing punches and kicks at.it sucks to live with me sometimes im sure, but your wife stays with you for the same reasons im sure.its not your fault...be happy and upbeat john, disregard the idiots and you will feel beter. :)

Yea you guys are right, I have naver been diagnosed w/ that disorder. But it probably means that you subconsiously dream and sleepwalk once in a while, over some really rough situations you may think of, and it just comes out at sleep time. There was some funny ones too. The thing is I do not remember most of the time what the hell I was dreaming or sleepwalking about. Of course I have a good idea later when it just pops in my head, but never thought it would turn into a regular haunt. I am not crazy or fly off the handle to quickly anyway, I do not know if that idiot I punched would say that though. But look at his atagonizing behaviour that caused it.

Hell I am gonna watch these assh---s rub salt in their wound for Gods sake. I know you guys would have done the same thing I did, for a mans family that saved your life countless times. But the best two are from my wife watching and waiting to see what I will do and filming one. One night, I got up and went to garage and picked up a hammer and screwdriver, then went to the front door and took it off it's hinges and put it outside. dropped the tools and went back to bed. Course she wakes me up then and I have to put door back on. Next she hears all kind of noise in living room, one night about 3am. She said by the time she got there, I had the couch out the front door and a coffee table. So she grabs the camera and tapes me removing all the living room furniture to the front lawn. I remember waking up outside and knocking on my own door. Thirsty as hell, and sweating like a pig. My neighbor next door was on a overtime shift, and said hell of a time to arrange furniture John, and help me bring it back in.

That is another thing, I am a strong guy, not bragging, but how come you have like superman strength when you sleep walk or whatever you call it. One night my wife says, I leaned over from the bed and picked up her triple dresserdroors w/ mirror attached with my fingertips, and slid it across the room. I woke up and my shoulder hurt and I said damn I must have slept wrong, my shoulder hurts like hell, and she points to the dresser and says your face is gonna hurt if you don't move it back! So they were fun and I never went after anybody or anger and stuff like that. It is more like trying to get away from something and I cannot tell anybody about that. Maybe someday I can forget about that. Oh well not very interesting huh The computer is not to bad tonight, so I am trying to stay on for a while. JLC

Not at this time, I have to finish setting up my shop. There is still a bunch of junk and parts we pulled from when my son and I built up a 240SX for drift racing. He wanted to get into the Pro-AM racing but then decided to do something else and drove it on the street until he figured out it was a ticket magnet/ But I've Honda and Nissan parts I have to haul off and figure out where I want to set everything up.

Once I have that completed I can put a price together for you.

Vaq, this sounds like a great idea. And from all the interest so far, those wildlife biologist ought to be real happy when all of us show up ready to cull some hog. Sounds like late May then? Get back w/ us when you have more of an idea when. Looking forward to meeting y'all in person.

BTW, Vaq, let me know if you get any turkey and how it was. It's all Rio Grande out there, right?

Hog Hunt, Not sure yet

For myself I need to put together a little money first so it will be at least 2 months before I could swing it.

I'm all for sleep under the stars for the time hunting. I figure air fair and car rental (Our company gets a break because of how many rentals we make a year for our consulting business) along with food and drink beyond that I guess there would be some License for the State while there.

When I get things worked out with the guys form the range about going to north florida any of y
all are more than welcome to come. That will probably be before going over to Texas..

Next time I see her (the wildlife biologist) I'll get all the particulars that I can think of. I walked out our R.O.W. close to where I took the last picture. I gotta take my good camera back next time I'm in that area. The sandstone is wallowed out and almost smooth from all the hoofed animal traffic through one spot.
Under the stars. Sam Wahl recreation area is a few miles up the road. Primitive campsites and fair fees. Might get by on 10 bucks a day.

Hog hunt update

I spoke with the wildlife biologist. To hunt this property requires a one time sign up process.
Copy of DL, hunting license, etc. Some paperwork but not much. A license is required to hunt this managed area. Once you are in the system you are good to go on return trips till your hunting license expires, then you re-submit the paperwork. A permit will be issued for a 24 hour period. Midnight to midnight, spotlighting is permitted and encouraged when hog hunting. 25 dollars per hunter which goes toward upkeep and food plots for desirable game. You can kill all you want, take all you want or leave 'em laying for the scavenger wildlife. Just drag 'em off the road so someone else don't have to move a rotting carcass to pass.
Now for the bad news. 5 hunters per party limit. Dang! I may have to go more than once.
LOL.
