home defense ammo

I finally got a XDm 9mm and I am wondering what people consider the best home defense ammo in the 9mm

this is very important issue. ryo not say this lightly. also dozo (please) wakarimasu (understand) that ryo is not expert about pistol. however since it 9mm then strongly recommend to you that you consider 9mm x 21mm or 22mm magnum parabellum round. these round are special make and available through Israeli company IWI. they seat the bullets deeper into neck of cartridge and so will fit almost any weapon that is chamber for 9mm x 19mm standard parabellum round. these mag para round have more kick and more Joule energy and more penetration power than any other 9mm round. also agree with hug e bear that hollow point round is also best too.

For home defense it is important that whatever round I use will stop where I shoot it...like Hornaday critical defense or xtreme shock 9x21 I am worried will go through the perp and the walls of my house.

hai hai. see ryo told you was not very expert about pistol. but what you say make much sense neh. and you right too. round would go right through bad guy and through anyone standing behind him too and then through wall of house to heaven only know where then neh.

Home defense ammo

Just as with personal defense ammo used outside the house, buy a box of several different brands and weights and see which one your gun shoots best with. All three of my Glocks prefer Corbon 125 gr JHP +P and Speer Gold Dot HP 124 gr +P. The key with pistol ammo is accuracy, as there isn't much difference in terminal ballistics between any of the major brands. As for the 9x21 or 9x22, These rounds are not nearly as widely available as the standard 9mm Para, and have to be more expensive, so if 9mm Para isn't big enough for you, try going up in caliber.

HP = Hollow Point
JHP = Jacketed Hollow Point
FMJ = Full Metal Jacket
+P = Rounds loaded to pressure levels above SAAMI specifications for that cartridge

There is also frangible to consider. My Glocks don't shoot point of aim with them, but if yours does, Extreme Shock Air Freedom rounds do some amazing damage to a target with almost no concern of overpenetration. They are expensive, but if the gun likes them, they would be my first choice over anything.
