Home made cannon

I've been talking about bowling ball cannons
for a while. The oxygen cylinder that size is not in
production any more and are scarce.
I have one that is 7 in dia and to me seems a good
size but what to use for a projectile ? I've come up
with this idea. I have a wood lathe so why not make my
projectiles out of fence post etc cutting them to resemble
bullets.

What do yall think ?

Cw, I think that you

might be able to find a coffee can in that diameter and cast projectiles out of concrete, cheap and easy, I have seen people do that before.

ChasW re: projectiles

If you had to cut the cylinder you have the right size mold. Use the cut part of cylinder, get some concrete release agent or diesel fuel will work, pour in the concrete, plaster, mud etc and it will shrink a certain % and it should work fine.

Your new avatar is ... well, not what I would have expected. The coyote couldn't even get the better of a bird! (Ever hear of a 12 gauge, dumbass?) Whatever happened to Yosemite Sam?

Is 7" the OD or ID of the cylinder? (assuming you have cut it)
I still have 2 of the bigger ones.
One is yours, just claim it.

and drilled a hole in the bottom to be sure
nothing is trapped inside. People don't seem
to like cutting oxygen cylinders for some reason.
I'm guessing at the size for the ID but the more
I've thought about it, it would be easier and cheaper
to use wood projectiles.
I will get back to you on that, see how this does.
I've checked the only bowling alley near here and
they don't have any balls LMAO they want to get
rid of and I haven't seen any at garage sales.
When I wasn't looking I was tripping over them.

I think I have T class cylinders.
I have yet to cut one either.
These had only "dry air" in them.
It is not supposed to be flammable, but, if I cut one, it will be with a band saw and non flammable cutting oil.

is 8.5 inches dia.
I'm searching for specs on cylinders
I still like the idea of a sailing ship
cannon. The carriage will be a lot easier
to build. I have some 3 inch bridge timbers
to build it with. Tricky part will be the mounting
lugs.

I have a stack of 4"x4"x8' oak cribbing timbers at the project I'm on now.
too many for a pickup.
I'm gonna haul my trailer and load up here in the next couple of weeks.
You can use some of these too.
I'll measure the OD of my cylinders this weekend if it is not raining.

and I keep looking at them on the net.
If I use a wood projectile I can cut way
back on the powder charge. May be
2 oz of FF. I know max is 4 oz. but
that is with a 10 lb ball.

I notice that if someone has replied to your post, as opposed to just adding a new one, like when the reply is indented, THEN you can no longer edit. Probably not an intentional thing, but a glitch.

Same greg no sermons or preaching.. period end of stroy.. even took this up with the man upstairs.. there will be nothing that's self aggrandizing about it.. just same greg with maybe a short prayer on vets day, or when Dubya or Lyle blow thier left foot off.. If i change at all .. i better get a pm telling me that OR the whole honesty and no BS thing is out the window..

Later dudes.. Chaplin needs a cold one..
