I'm goin' to Gitmo

Got my packet today, I'm going to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. It's a one year station, but I may extend for another year. Follow-on assignment to Ft Leonard Wood, MO. Well, it's not Iraq or Afghanistan, but I suppose it'll do. I'm not sure whether I'll be doing detainee ops or something else. It is more money and less to do than here, so I'll make more, spend less and work out more. And there aren't any IEDs or armed insurgents. I guess it's got its good points.

GITMO. I know you will straighten them out.

I report in August

Timing is gonna be a bit tricky here, because I'm sceduled for a Combat Tracker course here in June, so I may have to give that up. I really, really, want that school. As for going to FLW, yeah, I'll PCS directly from Cuba to there. Won't come back to Ft Huachuca. I'm actually kinda looking forward to getting back to Missouri for a couple years for a couple reasons. One, it gets snow and ice there, so the junkyards may actually have totalled '99-'03 F350s for me to rape for parts and two, I'll probably end up in a deployable BCT there and get the chance to hit up Afghanistan before I retire.

I've heard both stories about Gitmo; I've heard I'll be the equivalent of a correctinal officer, workng in one of those control centers with the computerized cell opening stuff and all that high-tech stuff that Greg AZ used, and I've heard that I won't be anywhere near the detention facility, that I'll do access control and customs at the port. I don't know, I guess I'll see when I get there. The good thing is that it isn't a deployment, so I'll have a barracks room and internet and all the normal creature comforts of home, so I'll be able to stay connected to the family and youse guys.

I don't think so, sam

I've heard that just to get to gitmo is a two hour flight from Florida because you have to go around the rest of the country. I don't know if they have commercial flights in or not. Can Americans even travel to Cuba? I know we have an embargo against the commies, but I don't know if travel is allowed. As for me getting off the base, I've heard we're completely locked down, but the base includes a few beaches, fishing trips, and other touristy things like that.

Good Luck, Runaway!

Glad you got something! Not sure if you're into fishing, but Cuba has some huge Bass that hardly get any fishing pressure!

She has a couple years before she's done with the army, so she'll stay here in AZ until she gets out. Then she'll go to MO, stay with family, then we'll buy a house outside FLW.

When we leave FLW, we'll either sell the house or get a property management company to rent it out, depending on where we decide to retire. I'm still pushing to retire down here and I think the humidity, winters, and mosquitos in MO will help my case.

Thanks, shak.

I plan to do some fishing down there, but I doubt I'll do much from a boat. I did some snorkeling in Panama a few years back and decided the ocean is too big, too deep, and has too many things with bigg-ass teeth for my tastes. I'll probably rent or buy a rod with a surf casting reel and fish from the shore.

Well, it's not what you were hoping for, but it sounds good to me. I hope you can enjoy it.
I did basic training in Ft. Leonard Wood in 1962. I still vividly remember doing PT on those damned rocks, with NCO's yelling at us non-stop. At least it's pretty there.
There's a really good gun show up at Lake of the Ozarks at an Indian school. Always lots of fun. Lots of one on one dealing out in the parking area, too.

I'm from that area

I grew up (mostly) in Lebanon, about 30 miles away. I went to elementary and middle school on post. Supposedly, the area has grown up, with St Robert actually becoming a real town instead of a couple trailer parks and a massage parlor.

before he went back in RA. His NG unit pulled duty there what a change of pace for him. He left his job as a corrections Officer and got to go play Military Corrections Officer. Runs learn to scuba there is some great dive sites there and quit being a little baby about the fishies with big teeth, just bite em back. Or do what I always do you can't out swim them so just make shure you can outswim your dive buddy.

If I extend, he'll be almost four when I come back. I'll get leave, so I'll see him some, but I'm going to miss out on a lot. Oh well, it's good money and I can use some to put aside to buy him a Jeep and keep fixing up "Daddy's big 'ol truck". This kid is such a fuckin' redneck.

Sorta sad your moving out of AZ before we got a chance to meet, but glad you got something thats half close to what you wanted.. Be lying if i said we all wanted you to get in a war zone again, know and proud that you wanted it, but much happier that your goofy ass is at least a little safer.. Hows the wife feel about the whole thing..

gonna retire at 20 or 22. I need to decide what I want to do when I get out. I thought about using my retirement pay to buy Powerball tickets. I figure it's just as safe as the stock market, and safer than real estate, but the wife says no. Oh well. Greg, the wife is fine with it as far as I know. I told her if she wants to get out of the army, I need another deployment to pay down some bills and I need to make E-7 because we're gonna take a big pay cut without her E-5 pay.
