I'm sad

My Grandfather passed away, WWII veteran on a mine sweeper. Hardest working man I ever knew. Of anyone I've ever known. I was pleasantly surprised by the military honors of Taps given during the funeral. I wasn't told this was going to happen. I respected him deeply. I don't mean to post a sad subject, sorry had to get this off my chest. Thanks

I have read

that we are losing WW2 vets at a rate of almost 1000 a day. I don't know what the number is, but we lose a small bit of our history with the passing of each one. I loved listening to my grandfather's stories of his time. Please, if you haven't already done so, talk to an old warrior and hear some war stories. The first-person experience beats any big-budget war movie hands-down.

Amen

My wife has an uncle at the Loma Linda Vet Hospital right now trying to hang in there. A couple of times I was able to talk to him but he keeps it behind the scenes mostly.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Having a Grandfather like that is really a blessing. I lost mine almost 7 years ago. He was in the Navy in WWII and the Navy color gaurd carried his casket. It was the most touching thing I ever seen. I miss him every day. He was my friend. I agree with Runawaygun, it' good to ask them about their stories. I actually worte down alot of his stories of being on a destroyer and escorting ships over and even some of the fun stuff of being on Shore leave in Italy. If I ever have kids, I'll pass them down. Hang in there brother.

thanks, I'm still dealing withe the loss. He (and my Grandmother) kept us from being homeless on several occasions due to an alcoholic stepfather. So he is very special to me.

Many of them do

My Uncle Bill was in Vietnam and I knew from my dad that he had seen and done some fucked up stuff, but he never talked about it. When I got back from my second tour to Iraq, I visited him and we were outside smoking and I was telling him some of the stuff I had done and I showed him my Bushmaster M4 with the EOTech and surefire light and stuff and he just let loose. He started yelling and cussing, talking about if they had that kind of stuff they'd have won that fuckin' war and he finally sat down with me and we each went through about two packs of cigarettes talking back and forth. I've never heard him talk above a low tone of voice before that night. It was great, two soldiers of different generations swapping war stories. Mine didn't compare, but it was great. I think back to that and with the exception of the century, I bet it was the exact same thing that has played out since the beginning of time, old warrior and young sharing stories of bravery and fear and friends lost. Fucking wonderful.

Mike

sorry for your loss. Both my grandfathers were WWII vets also. One passed about 8 years back from a long slow battle with Parkinsons (He was a gunner on a plane). My other grandfather was a medic, he's getting pretty old and just got diagnosed with congestive heart failure . Its good to hear that they honored your grandfather at his funeral.

Sorry about your Grandfather. This old Vet salutes your Grandad and thanks him and you for your service. I lost my Mom & Dad in 2001 and never knew either of my Grandfathers. They both died before I was born. Keep up the good fight, think good thoughts and you will have fond memories.
