I'm off to West Texas

Doing some hunting. Hogs mostly. Coyote, if I see any. Turkey season opens this w/e, so if I see/hear any, I'll have my scatter gun too. I haven't used it for Turkey before though.

I like how people will tell me I can't hunt turkey with my old shotgun since it only has a 2 3/4" chamber. I'll reply, "Really? I didn't know that. Because it worked for my dad and my grandpa. They didn't seem to have a problem."

I could be wrong, but I figure you just call 'em in close and blast 'em in the neck with some #4s. I think my humpback can hack it.

Wish me luck. Take care, y'all.

I wouldn't doubt it, the old fart used to read to us everyday out in the door yard up under some hazelnut tree's.

Used to watch three or four Western movies on Saturday and Sunday too. Even showed us how to make whistles out of sapling Birch tree branches.

lol...

We blew up an Out house once, a two seater... Some didn't move quiet far enough away, they walked home.. LOL

Used to jump trains in the US and go into Canada and back into the US. It was much faster than hitchhiking from Woodland all the way around to Calais. Getting on wasn't a problem because we did it at a turn where they slowed down, but getting off was fun... I'd slap the crap out of my kids if I ever caught them doing it...

Use to jump 60 feet off the top of the Black Bridge too, dead heads floating in the water and all. Even ran the logs in boom floats.

Wonder some of us are alive today...

Good trip

had a blast. Didn't get anything myself, but a good time. One of the guys got three hogs over the weekend. The last one was a sow and he offered it to my buddy, who accepted and skinned and field dressed it. Got 75 lbs. of meat out of her. He said he'll get me some smoked meat. Turns out she was pregnant too. Had six piglets about a month out.

The whole trip was weird though. I mean lots of weird thing happened. First off, I was riding with my buddy from his house in Paradise, TX. Our lease is out in Eastland Co. between Eastland and Cisco. He has his 4 wheeler on a trailer. Well, just outside Ranger, about 7 miles from the lease, he notices the trailer is pulling funny. We stop and look, and sure enough it's flat. And he doesn't have a spare! So he decides to unload the 4wheeler off the trailer and drive slow w/ me riding the 4wheeler behind him. So I'm riding this on the highway as night is approaching as his trailer is banging and throwing chunks of tire at me.

We finally make it to camp just a little after sundown without too much trouble and his rim intact on the blown tire. So we're setting up camp and we start smoking a nice 7lb brisket and throw some steaks, corn, and beans on the grill. About 3 hours later, we're good and drunk and sitting inside the shack and I see a mouse running along the gear hanging on the back wall. And I tell the others "Look at that mouse! What a dumb SOB." Because he was just sitting there looking at me as I walked up to him. So one of the guys grabs a broadhead and just walks up and spears it. The thing just sat there and looked at us the whole time. I never saw a mouse not run away like that.

The next morning, I get up and go to my blind. I didn't see any hogs or any large game the whole time in there. But there was a flock of speckled belly geese that flew over me about 30 feet off the ground. If it was goose season and I had my shotgun with me, I think I could have gotten two.

Later in the day, we were working on feeders and setting up blinds, stands, and hog traps and way off in the distance I see turkey. They're too far away for me to get down there and call them in to get a shot. So, no turkey this weekend. Maybe later this month. There were definitely some there and my buddy had some on his trail cam.

We were talking to one of the other guys (the one that got the 3 hogs) and he said he had gotten two when he was coming in. He was pulling in the gate and said he saw these boars just hanging out. So he went for his rifle in the back of his truck. He pulled it out of its case and they were still there. He realized he wasn't loaded, so he went back and got his ammo and loaded. They were still there. So he lined up his shot and dropped one. He said that the other was still hanging around, so he was able to drop it too.

There was lots of game out there. That we saw or had pictures of on our cams. Doves and quail. Ducks, turkey, and geese. Rattle snakes. Coyotes. They were close the night we were checking on one of the hog traps. There was a promising young buck at one of the feeders.

Then later that night, we ate the brisket that had smoked for a day. It was gooood!. That's when the other guy came in with the hog. He shot it w/ a .243. Never heard it. It was a nice clean shot though. Through both lungs.

Then yesterday, I was relieving myself behind the shack and I hear something rustling in the brush. And then I feel something brush my leg and go across my foot. I turn in the direction it was going and there's a rabbit just sitting there looking at me. I couldn't believe it. The thing actually walked across my foot while I'm standing there peeing. I had my Judge loaded with #4s (for snake) and if I had it at the time, it would have been perfect. I could have made a quick clean kill at that distance. But while I was considering how tasty its legs would be, it ducked under the shack.

Weird things this weekend. Great times.

Is it dry in Eastland Co.? I just set up the rv at Post and they had 2000+ acres burn yesterday and last night. I've seen dry before but it's about as bad as I can remember up here. These folks need a good soaking rain.

Yeah, it's pretty dry. A lot of the ponds are real low. And that's bad considering the time of year. If it doesn't rain a lot and soon, I don't see how it's going to make it through summer. There's been a few fires. Two years ago, when those major fires were going through, it burned up 800 acres at the ranch. There's still charred mesquite and live oak all over. There was another recently nearby. There are burn bans in effect, but some idiots at a rest stop were playing with matches and started another big fire. It came close to getting to our lease again, but they got it out before that and before it burned up too much. Some people today are so damn ignorant. Not having any sense of consequences and responsibility.

Wild Weekend

I agree that that does sound pretty wild. I hope your buddy got that flat fixed. I'll bet that was wild riding that 4-wheeler with the rubber kicking up at you. You must have felt like you were in a NASCAR race. LOL.

Seems like most of Texas, at least everything west of about Ranger, needs rain. About three or four days worth of really slow soaking rain too. Not that stuff that rains like hell for a couple of hours and just runs off. Mesquites are starting to leaf out so shouldn't be anymore really cold weather. Just hope it rains soon. SJMB,

The big kill

The big kill
Eastland Co. TX. 4/2/2011

After he got the mouse, I thought he should pose like when you get a picture of a deer or hog you took. We were a bunch a fools that night.
