John is 84 yrs old and tough as nails. He was walking his dog (Shadow) behind his house on a little path. John is legally blind and now uses a walker to get around. He was 3 doors down from his house and a bee buzzed him, then another and then a swarm. He was stung more than 1000 times. They attacked Shadow a 14 yr old poodle also. John & Shadow hightailed it back home and his wife saw the commotion, she came out and got the hose and started knocking the bees off until she could get him inside. Of course her face and hands were stung many, many times.
She called 911 and they sent the fire dept who used foam on the bees to no avail. An exterminator was called and the bees (African Colonized Honey Bees) were killed. John spent 2 days in the hospital and is recovering nicely. Norma his wife is just now recognizable again. The poor dog Shadow, just laid down and died, he couldn't take it.
The bees were in a hollow spot in a block wall.
Moral is becareful out there and on the lookout in our southwest states.
John said he was at least 15 to 20 feet away from the nest and they just attacked him. No warning and no provocation on his part!
John is a retired Fire Chief from Big Bear, Ca.
