Leaving Mags loaded

What are your personal feelings about leaving rifle and/or pistols mags loaded for long periods of time?

Personally I leave my .22 clip loaded and put in a safe place. I see no harm in it.

Ranger Sarge, I tend to rotate my loaded mags. I leave em loaded for 2 months and then unload it and rotate to a different mag for another two months. I've heard of alot of people leaving them loaded for much longer periods of time with no problems. But, I'm just a little cautious.

Ditto...

I never leave my carry mags loaded, I rotate them. Like Shakleford said, I leave my range mags empty. In fact, whenever I get new mags I function test them, and if they are worthy they move up to my carry mags and my less desirable carry mag moves to the range box. I use 9 round Chip McCormick mags in my M1911A1 carry piece and load them shy 1. Actually the concern is the ears at the top of the mag spreading under constant pressure. I have never had a spring fail.

What wears out springs are cycles of compression and expansion and also over-compression. So, every time you "rotate" your mags, you are causing additional wear by cycling the spring. Loading and unloading magazines will cause more problems than loading and storing them for good. For best results USGI magazines are probably the best bet because many aftermarket magazines use cheap springs.

One AR15.com member reportedly discovered a fully loaded 20 round USGI mag that was loaded in the Vietnam era. 20 some years later it not only functioned fine but continues to do so. Others have reported 1911 mags and Luger mags loaded up since World War II that continued to function perfectly when first fired after 40 years.

When you're ready to pack them away, you can fit 28 loaded USGI 20 round mags in a .50 cal ammo can if you lay them down sideways 4 to a layer. You can also fit 14 USGI 30 rounders this way, with a lot of slack space left over.

.30 cans will hold 14 USGI 20 rounders laid flat without a hitch.

I rotate my loaded mags for my carry and home defense guns. I leave all the range guns mags unloaded.

Catfish and Shakeford your wearing out your mags, leave them loaded. I have mags loaded for years have never had failure. When you load and unload thats when you wear your mags out. Loading and unloading your mags every two months will wear them out quickly, mags have tenision springs designed to be loaded forever. When you keep unloading and reloading you wear them out.

Agree fully with Dockit & Lucky. Leave them loaded until you get to the range then unload them by sending all the rounds down range.

Thanks for everyones

Thanks for everyones replies.I have always left most all of my mads loaded except for new that haven't even been unpackaged yet.I had a lengthy "conversation" with this younger counter boy"punk" at one of my local gun shops that said it weakened the spring over time.It got to a heated talk that the spring was designed to be under tension and the boy would not listen to me or others that were roped into the debate....Of course there were some that sided with him.In the end I said all your empty magazines is some that they can put in your coffin along with the empty weapon. That's my opinion. Thanks for all that chimed in and am willingly to hear more opinions. But I am set in ways, and love to hear others thoughts as well. One that does all the talking and never listens,is looking forward to a life of ingorance.

Spring steel has changed in the last 50 years. I have read that quite old mags should not be loaded long term. Check out any spring mfgr's web-site. Spring life by the mfgr is rated by cycles. So you folks that say load & unload isn't good over a long time have a good point.

It's too late for me, save yourself.

Well, that's because Catfish has been my nickname since I was a kid. I always loved catching catfish and always seemd to be able to catch them no matter if I was fishing for something else. And I love eating catfish. And when I was a kid, I swam like a catfish, always liked to go straight to the bottom. The 88 part is because 8 is my favorite number. The number 8 is a loop, infinity on it's side, it never ends and never begins.

You should post the video on here sometime. Sounds like I"m going to have to check me out a boat race sometime. That's OK ACE, we are glad you have a life and are enjoying your family. Although it did get a little boring without you this weekend. I had to listen to Snake whine about badgirl punishing him for washing the colors with the whites. Sighhhhh.
I did go see "Inception" this weekend. Have you seen it. Weird movie. But, I liked it, but then again, I'm weird, so....

Yes please post as many pics as ya can, anything about firearms and bows is well appreciated here. I look forward to seeing them. I have a new skill I recently found out. I can throw knives pretty good and accurate. However I am not a big fan of blades, but I may hone this skill and who knows it may come in handy.

I leave mine loaded, except of the Saiga 12 mags. Not sure what effect long term (month or 2) may have on plastic casings.
