Lethal .22?

My friend doesn't seem to understand of ballistics of firearms. He says that a .22 round isn't larger or powerful enough to kill you at point blank range. I'm like "Yes, a .22 round can kill you. It travels like 1,000 feet per second, and at the speed it's lethal. And it would turn your brain into mush if you put the end of your barrel against your skull." I've been telling this to numerous number of people and all them agree with me that . 22 caliber round can kill you and my friends have been telling said friend that .22 can kill you, and yet, he still doesn't believe it.

Used to use a.22 to kill a cow or pig.lots of rabbits, squirrels, would argue that the. 22round was a killer too.

We very often had to put cows or bulls down. In the three years I worked there I never had one that a .22 revolver didn't put down.

the class field trip in 5th grade was to a meat packing plant in Peoria Ill.. Armors.. course this was before the days of OSHA, and EPA.. or Kids mental health issues for that matter.. you guys all know how boys are facinated with blood and guts at that age.. promise you we had our bellies full.. I can't imagine why they would do that.. guessing they always had or something... anyway sure nuff the cows were droped with a 22.. that was the easy part.. from there on it was all blood guts, and smell.. i was ok till half the kids started puking.. then i think we all did.. girls are crying, boys are trying not to.. course we did the whole butcher thing.. and you can imagine how much fun they had with us..

Guess the lesson here is it didn't hurt any of us.. least i don't think anyone turned into a vegatarian..

A lot of the ones here in Florida use airguns actually. The Gamo pellet rifles will do the job. And, Gunslinger, your friend needs to tune in and watch swamp people one night, or any of the other gator hunting shows, they're all using .22's to slay the last living dinosaurs.

This forum has taken a weird turn. Not saying it's bad, but it's just gotten off topic just a little bit.

Not too far off subject. It is a reasonable gun question. Now some of the answers may be weird but they are truthful. Just our way or giving examples of proof.

I've got to be honest with you.. when i saw your post, i'll quote ya here....

"Yes, a .22 round can kill you. at that speed it's lethal. turn your brain into mush..your barrel against your skull...that . 22 caliber round can kill you..been telling said friend that .22 can kill you."

Lucky said that their used in a lot of slaughter houses.. and ..GOSH.. people talked about slaugher houses..

I didn't respond till the point of "slaugher house" conversation..cause other wise im responding to three "it'll kill ya's" one lethal, and one brain into mush..

Sorry we got off topic.. It's a given that just about any weapon can kill.. Not sure that the subject deserves anything more than members saying that if it puts down a ton of beef on the hoof, and is the first choice for crime "hits" the round is a killer.. so where do we go from here.. you got some slow friends bud.. sorry.. but to be honest rather talk about slaugher houses than brains to mush..

Lets start over.. welcome to the site... dont shoot that left boobie off.. not sure why your friends lack of appreciation for the 22 is a factor that we can't drift off from ..but .. sheeesh i don't know.. forgot somewhere, but pretty sure it's all going to be ok..

on a serious note.. We normally talk about "stoping" power, as opposed to brains to mush killing.. Were not PC just aware that others make the most of that sorta thing.. By the way ..those others would be dumb as your friend... anyway.. forgive the ramble.. don't shoot that thing off.. welcome aboard..

Wow

I just reread my reply and I think it may have came off the wrong way. In reality it is your post so if you say it is off topic then it probably is. Didn't mean it to come across wrong if you or anyone else took it that way. Was just trying to say that "to me" is seemed on topic because people were explaining their experiences as a way to back the idea up.

Sorry to anyone that may have taken it in a bad way.

I had no idea

It seem to me that I didn't realize that .22s were use in slaughter houses, and that kinda thrown me for a loop, and I know that y'all were making examples about stopping power, and such. But, it's all good through. Thanks for the comments!

we do tend to "drift" a tad.. I have a serious thought on this tho.. I would bet a lot of older guys have had this experiance, so for you younger guys this is offered in the "learn from others mistake" catagory.. Don't know if this is related to your friends closed mind on 22's or not, but i've found that most people have such preconcieved thoughts on guns, that your either dealing with honest questions, or questions designed to demonize those of us who are interested in them..

The preconcieved negative comments actually do start with "killing".. This is the loop that those negative about guns will get into.. least in my experiance those who are hyper sensitive to firearms get fixated with killing power.. Without getting all "calling dr Freud".. i'm guessing this is brought about by the media, news, and other fear mongers who plant the gun=dead idea..it's a valid fear for someone who doesn't understand, and for anyone who abrigates (im doing that with out sp check why?) their health and welfare to others.. I have a family member who is thinking about getting one of the security (adt, brinks etc) companies.. to me, and guessing most of you this is foolish and just adds an extra "layer" of mistakes/time.. We can't assign the well being of our familys to others. It has to be our responsibility..

Those who talk about mass murder have to understand that the mayham would still happen, just substitute a car or baseball bat for the gun.. here again i've drifted.. the point is that is seems when ever i hear "kill" it's already loaded with preconcieved negative.. You can't convince the anti hunter that the death of an animal by a gun is by far the most painless way to die.. Those who like simple answers wont process how an animal dies in the wild if it's not shot.. nor will they realize that taking away a gun wont stop the murder.. only create another way to commit it..

So "slinger" forgive me if in anyway i was mean spirited.. Glad to have you aboard, and like your posts.. try not to get drawn into arguments with someone whos not reasonable, and when it comes to guns a lot arent..

Is a 22 deadly....

mention Bobby Kennedy to your friend and ask him if he thinks it is deadly...

On June 5, 1968, Sirhan Sirhan fired a .22 caliber Iver-Johnson Cadet revolver hitting Robert Kennedy three times, once in the head and twice in the back killing him.

Pretty sure it made the news such as it was before CNN and the rest of the vultures on the Cable Networks...

No sir, he fell into that bullet... Never argue with a stupid person. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!!

damn right, TG

I think it's funny when I hear all this. It isn't just about the .22LR. The conventional wisdom on this has changed (thanks to gun mags, I think). I constantly hear about whether a .300 Ultra mag is enough for Whitetail, or you can't shoot bear with anything less than 20mm HE.

Again, the young'uns may have fallen for all this, but I remember in my childhood my kinfolk taking deer with .22LR and duck or goose hunting with the anemic 2 3/4" low charge shotshells.

But I'll still get told, "It can't be done" lol

There used to be a locker plant next door to the yard at work. On hog killing day you could hear the POP of a .22 short and all the squealing and banging ended quick. Yep, a .22 will put you down.

Evening' Gent's (loosely speaking as usual) , how been? Vaq, you experiencing the 'weather' in your neck of the woods? I see that Dallas Fort Worth et all got pounded, glad to see at last count no one was killed, I love the country but don't miss living there (Spring TX, Harris County, seven years in the 70's) That was a mean SOB of a storm, can't remember one worse in my time, but I was used to Hurricanes coming of the 'Gulf' via 'Galveston', not much of a better proposition........I hope all is well and I hope to be back soon more often, I seem to be going through something that has vicariously changed my life and it ain't getting much better for either of us, truth be told........I feel a responsibility as a spouse, as a father and as a friend and not necessarily in that order, either way you will be taken care of as far as I am concerned!

Enough of my 'bleeding heart bullshit' I hope all is well with you and yours..

a friend of mine and coworker for many years has lung cancer and it looks like he will loose his right lung, it's been a real "bitch" for everybody involved.....Lets just say that he doesn't have much support at home (spouse) so it's up to friends and family to do what they can, when they can......I have never seen such a situation.........

Damn, Hamp...

I hope it comes together for him. I know from personal experience what it is like to be on your friends side of this kind of situation. All of you being there for them will make a huge difference even if it seems to not being doing that at times.

I know I put people through some real shit with my mood swings and the roller coasting while my mind tried to wrap itself around the thought that I not only would not live forever, but had a better than 50/50 chance to not do so for another year.

They might piss one or all of you off (for me it was trying to put distance between me and others in case everything went south) and not even know they are doing it. With you being there for them it will sink in that even when they are feeling totally alone, they really are not and never will be and that means more than anyone really can understand who isn't in this situation.

anyway...

Good to hear Hamp.

I'm glad to hear that Hamp. I just picked up my grandfather's S&W .38. I got put it in my name when I get home, and then take it to the range, and test fire it and make sure it still works.

curious.. open up the crane and see what the model number is.. probably a model 10.. but could be a target 15.. Also.. whats the deal with putting it in your name.. is this some sorta WA rule or what..

Guys.. our buddy John here is also National Guard.. a salute to the three NG troops we lost in Afghanistan last week.. Think these were Ohio NG.. Really think the sooner were out of there the better..

This is my first time owning a revolver of any kind, and I really don't know that much about them. So, I have no idea what the crane is, but I can look it up on the website I guess.

it has degenerated to the point where we can't trust our "allies", they be shooting us in our sleep if we let them, fuck them and the Koran, bring our troops home, we have 'dicked' around there long enough, the Russians spent ten years there and were defeated, what makes us any different?

That being said, i also think we have a hard time with it.. Least i do, as we HAVE to support our troops first, middle, and last.. This is a hard one as i don't believe Afghanistan is worth one more American life.. Hamp is dead on with the trust in "allies" here.. We've had close to 1/3 of our losses sustained by the those were training.. They openly run drugs with the helicopters we've given them, and trained them to use.. The drug issue is part of the big problem in my eyes, as we had to stop eradicating the poppy fields as part of our game plan.. This is facts gents.. When we first went over we were destroying their fields.. We had to stop that to get the governments cooperation..

One of the main problems i have with it, is we have no idea what a "win" looks like, this has yet to be defined as anything but training the Afgan army.. The same troops that are attacking us.. We've spent suitcases of money..(this is literal) to win the support of tribal leaders.. They can't stand us, and the sooner we pick up on Hamps other point the better.. This is a religious war to them.. Course with our political correctness we can't even discuss this issue.. Sad as it's the main one that makes it unwinnable..

Ok so how do we face reality, and still support our troops.. I can't in good conscious support this effort that is going to fail.. They hate us.. Just that simple..Plus we've given them a time that we leave so all they have to do is wait..

Don't know, just know that as long as were sending troops there we can't have a repeat of what happened in Vietnam.. Those in theater have to have our full support.

gunslinger..

look five comments up for my question.. The crane is the arm that the cylinder swings out on to eject and reload.. you said it was a S&W, if you look on the crane arm you can see the model number.. should be a two didgit number with a dash and number.. ie 10-3.. that for example is a model 10, and third change.. some times the changes are minor things, some times major, but that can get us started..

"The state of Washington hereby fully occupies and preempts the entire field of firearms regulation within the boundaries of the state, including the registration, licensing, possession, purchase, sale, acquisition, transfer, discharge, and transportation of firearms, or any other element relating to firearms or parts thereof, including ammunition and reloader components. Cities, towns, and counties or other municipalities may enact only those laws and ordinances relating to firearms that are specifically authorized by state law, as in RCW 9.41.300, and are consistent with this chapter. Such local ordinances shall have the same penalty as provided for by state law. Local laws and ordinances that are inconsistent with, more restrictive than, or exceed the requirements of state law shall not be enacted and are preempted and repealed, regardless of the nature of the code, charter, or home rule status of such city, town, county, or municipality."

so that the firearm can be in your name, and you have to send it in to the ATF, and FBI. So, I rather go through the proper channels, and in case if some reason, I get pull over while going to the range, so, I can legally say it's my gun that I own

gunslinger..

Don't want the serial number.. just the model number.. again this is a two digit number on the inside of the crane.. Afraid you might be opening a lot of doors you don't want to if you do what (gona quote ya here) "so that the firearm can be in your name, and you have to send it in to the ATF, and FBI".. Thats got me shaking my head .. The idea that you have to send your grandfathers piece to the ATF or the FBI isn't right.. "gifting" or passing on family weapons is a normal process.. and before you send that gun to the ATF, or FBI... i'm chocking here.. Please stop.. call your local LE, and just tell them that you've been given your Grandfathers revolver.. Who ever answers the phone is going to yawn and say.. So... This isn't a deal John, don't make it one..

again whats the model number, and give us a description of the piece..

there is no gun registration in the state of Washington.

Do I need to register my firearms in Washington State?
No.

How do I transfer ownership of my pistol or revolver?
There isn’t a requirement to transfer ownership. However, both parties may complete a Pistol/Revolver Private Disposition/Transfer form voluntarily to report the change in ownership. You won’t receive a notification after we receive the form.

thats from Washington state website i posted earlier.

Sorry about the confusion. This my first time owning a gun. I didn't meant to make anyone mad. Greg, it's a short barrel, about 5 inches long, six shot and it had a single/double action

common thing

a guy wants to do the right thing when owning a gun,at least the intelligent ones do,but if you were to go down the road you described you would get a lot of looks, like greg described.Rest easy your legal as far as ownership.
