Looking to build a new AR platform. I already have a multi-cal lower, so the .308 is out. I have an AR-15 already, so want something different. Seems most popular are 9mm. .40SW, 6.8 SPC, and the .458 socom. Any suggestions, Pro's or Con's... Any input before I commit will be greatly appriciated.

lots of choices..

I think I would like to have one in the 30 RAR. I read about them about a year and a half ago. I guess they have them by now. They are supposed to match the 308 in a shorter case capatible with the standard ar-15 platform. I think the fn 5.7 is pretty kool too. I think the 30 remington auto rifle .RAR. would double as a hunting round and the 5.7 is kinda like a 22 hornet with 50 rounds. I love the hornet so. I think that would be a really kool varmit rifle.

I have a 5.7

I have a PS90 in the 5.7, while it would help with cutting down the number of different calibers of ammo I need to stock, I can't see an AR in the 5.7 beating the performance of my 5.7. Also want to be a caliber that isn't impossable to find.

I would

go with the 6.8 SPC out of all those. Good ballistics. Cartridge is designed for the platform. Then you could get the slidefire and really have a good time.

my opinion

I like the 6.8 round the best out of the ones listed, but 9x19 will let you do a lot of training for the $$.

Fantastic Battle round which could also be used Hunting without worry...

If they do not go to the 308 AR then the 6.8 should be the choice for the Military....

It will be something I put together in the future.

You are stuck with it being a pistol at that point?

ED has a Spikes Tactical 5.56 Pistol and it shoots ok, kinda a waste imho...

I've shot plenty of the POF SBR's and they are ok fine. I dunno if I would get as short as some of them though, 7.5 inch barrel is kinda ehhh...

Not .50BMG

It's a .50 Beowulf. Thick bullet, not as big a cartridge.

.50 Beowulf with 223
.50 Beowulf with a .223 for comparison

Your correct about the .50 beowulf, but they do make a .50 BMG upper for it. I think Bohica Arms is one of a few manufactures. And TallGuy, an AR build can be as little as $500'ish to as much as a few grand. Just depends on where you want to take it.

prices on ar15

i got my firs ar build shooting for a total value of about $800-900 and not quite what i want yet,but its shootable. its a billet macted uper and lower set.coulda beena little cheaper if i didnt use the magpull furniture and got forged instead of billet.anyone know what calibers can be used in standard ar15 uppers?getin ready to start project number2 asap.kinda leaning towards 6.5 grendel right now.flat shooting and acurate, and i hear they work well out to 1000 yds.but then i kinda think a beowulf would be fun and wont have any problem taking down bears, moose, elephants.haha

But those are hard to find parts for, and I hear there are issues with getting mags.

considering you can do the same with a regular pistol with the correct paper work.

calibers for ar15

a list made by capsandstems.com

The AR-15 is probably the most versatile rifle on the market. By simply pushing out two push pins, and in some cases replacing the magazine, the upper receiver can be replaced with an upper of different caliber converting the typical .223 rifle into one of many calibers. Conversions are possible in the following calibers:
.20 Practical - Weaver Rifles
22LR - Spikes Tactical
5.45x39 - Smith and Wesson
.223 - Remington, DPMS, Colt, Bushmaster, etc...
5.56mm NATO - Colt, Bushmaster
6.5mm Grendel - Alexander Arms
6.8 Remington SPC - Model 1
7mm TCU - SSK Industries
.300 Whisper - SSK Industries
.338 Lapua - Bohica Arms
.40 S&W - Olympic Arms
10mm - Olympic Arms
.45 ACP - Olympic Arms
.450 "Thumper" - Bushmaster
.458 Socom (Rock River Arms)
.499 LWR - LWRC
.50 Beowulf - Alexander Arms
.50 BMG - Bohica Arms

no mention of 7.62x39/30 remington/.264lb that is basicly the exact same thing as grendel.

.50 BMG AR???

How would you even shoot that? If you see the troubl shoulder firing a barrett then imagine what it would do in a AR.

Barretts are heavy and the still kick like hell....I dont want to imagine what the kick would be like in a light as a feather AR!

Yeah, .50BMG

seems a little overpowered for the AR platform. If I wanted a .50BMG, I think it would be a Barrett or an AR50. In the AR15, 6.8 seems a good multipurpose round. Anybody tried Remington's new .30AR? I think a AR10 would be nice too, though.

I believe you my friend. However everyone has a gun they are scared of. Barrett .50's are the ones I am scared of. Even the McMillian Tac-50 scares me cause its a .50 BMG.

My cousin Told me BMG stands for "Big Motherfuckin Gun" and that I should fear it. And well...after watchin vids of the BMG over the years it makes my hair stand up to this very day. Once I shoot a barrett then maybe I can let that fear go.

I have watched a 16 year old boy shooting one not 25 feet from me and it looked like nothing more than someone had pushed his shoulder. Not anymore or less than it did his fathers when he shot it.

I understand that

Its just me being scared of it. Why I dont know. Its not the highst on my list of things that scare me but its a close second a part from my fear of heights.

I will stand my ground and shoot one but I would have to have an instructor there telling me how to position my self for the ass kicking I will recive from the barrett.

Now that is a sweet addition to the 870 for anyone. Though with the way I grip the damn thing the stock flexes and deflects into my cheek.. It cuts the recoil and flip by around 1/2.

knox stock is cool.

mesa tactical makes a block that allows the use of ar15 furniture, and offers a mil spec diameter buffer tube to reduce recoil.i like that you can use ar parts, but knox is cool because it buffers the grip as well, and its allot cheaper.

The Barrett doesn't even kick as hard as a 12 ga shotgun. I'm pretty sure I have a pic of me in here somewhere firing it from the prone. Young man, stop being a fag, go fire a .50, kick your cousin in the sack where his nuts should be, and steal his girlfriend.

edit- Here ya go, snakey poo.

Not much recoil at all, but they do get hot as shit in the Kuwaiti sun.
