looking for a good pistol for the girlfriend
well... my girlfriend is kind of a.... whimp haha. she cant pull back the slide to my PF9, and its hard for her to pull back the slide to the HK USP. she can do it but she has trouble. in my opinion shes just scared of it because the first gun she shot was my .22 rifle and that was about a month ago. I would like her to learn to shoot pistols and shoot them accurately. I feel its something everyone should know how to do. so here I am asking for advice, as I'm not the best teacher in the world. how I should have her feel more comfortable with holding a pistol and/or find a pistol thats easy for her with little recoil and an easy slide, yet effective and reliable. thanks in advance I'm not home officer, take me drunk! |

have her try this with the HK...
grip the slide and hold it in place and the push with the other hand on the grip...
The exact opposite of the normal wau you rack the slide.
I teach elderly people and women/children to do it this way in case they need to do it when alone at home to protect themselves.
It is actually the easiest way to clear a jambed up slide also where a case has swelled and is refusing to come out of the chamber. Hold the slide and shove the frame forward, might have to kit it with the palm of the hand a couple times but it works bettern than putting a rod down the barrel Crown first.
Ishootdaily
get her a revolver, it won't jamb or smoke stack and if a round doesn't go bang she just squeezes through to the next round. Like an 7 or 8 shot 357 with 38+p in it...
Saint J.M. Browning
Spot on, ISD. That would be my suggestion as well, given the information provided. No slide to rack either.
Reaper308
that’s how I rack the slide and I'm not a elderly woman child. Ok maybe not an elderly woman... but I'll always be a child. That’s why ebear wants me. Push forward with your dominant hand on the grip while pulling the slide back with your non dominant hand with an overhand grip on the top of the slide just behind the ejection port. I laugh when I see people struggling to pull the slide back just using their thumb and index finger on the rear of the slide.
Hot_diggity- If you don't want to buy anything else, just buy some light/low recoil loads. Have her get used to dry firing or firing using snap caps. If you live close to a range that offers instruction it would greatly benefit her to take a 30 min or hour private lesson just to get the proper fundamentals down and feel more comfortable with the gun. She should be able to handle either of the guns that you have, but she'll have to get over the mental hurdle and feel confident with her abilities first. After she gets comfortable and has good fundamentals, go buy a shit ton of cheap ammo and practice.
Ishootdaily
least thats how eBear envisions you!
True that, she should be able to use either or any he gets in the future for that matter.
It is all mechanics in the end.
Though personally I like the comfort in knowing that my wifes revolver will not fail.
Beyond that the PF 9 should fit her hand great and she should be able to handle the recoil with the proper grip and all.
Everyone shoots differently, but the basic mechanics almost always stay the same.

My suggestion for a revolver for ya woman would be Ruger LCR? Maybe an S&W 638? I dont have any expirence with these revolvers but they are small framed and my help.
Ishootdaily
In the hands of a ManlyGirl it would be a solid choice, but most will need to extra weight of a metal weapon to help with aim and follow up shots. There are trade offs when going to a lighter weapon, some that a novice should not try...

Tulammo. Russian Yes,Cheap yes if ya find cheaper I will be surprised lol!

yea I was thinking about a revolver, but i prefer pistols... but if its for her comfort ill shop around for a revolver no problem haha... I have never shot a 38 so no clue how much recoil they have on average, perhaps I can find someone around home with a 38 to test out. all the small caliber guns I see are light as hell and small so the recoil is rediculous for the caliber.... for my girlfriend haha. anywho will check out revolvers and see if I can't find someone with one for her sake.... I worry about her sometimes :S lmao

a revolver is still a pistol.i think you meant an (automatic sa/da magazine fed recoil operated pistol?)
WEBSTERS SAYS (pistol)
: a handgun whose chamber is integral with the barrel; broadly : handgun
(handgun)
: a firearm (as a revolver or pistol) designed to be held and fired with one hand
really there is more to the definition, and you could use batfe guidlines to shape the definition as well.but basicly a revolver like the 357/38 that was being discussed above is a pistol a 1911 is a pistol, and an old flintlock with no butstock and shorter barrel is also a pistol.a 38 is in my opinion a fine gun for a beginer woman to shoot.when i was a weee young 120# kid i could shoot 357mag no problem.a 357 pistol can use 38s safely and a 38 is a bigish boom with low recoil but damaging enough to stop bad guys.(police used 38s for a looong time)my 110# wife can handle a .45 auto no prob, and she has verry small hands too.just throwin that out there.maybe a glock would be in order.

How about a gun made for ladies? You been talk big guns try a 380 semi and they do make some guns just for ladies that are semi or like others have told you a revolver plus useing the right ammo and being able to hit what your shooting where you want it to hit it a lot better then the HK USP ( I had one what one loved it) or a big cal,
take her to a range ( if you can) that let's you rent it there shoot it there and talk to a few people that deal in this and google it on line and read,Plus make sure she wants to really do it ot IT MIGHT COME BACK TO HIT YOU !!!! TY

Don't know if it's the best choice, but my GF loves her Walther P22 and Walther PK380. Hell, I like firing the P22 (I love .22's!).
Pulling the slide back is absolutely effortless and the kick is almost nonexistant. They are really worth a try. here's some pics

They are around $400 each with the laser and around $315 each without the laser, so I consider these to be pretty affordable.

if you're looking for an excuse to buy another pistol, but want the woman to also feel comfortable shooting it... look for a P229 9mm. You can find them used or certified trade in's for a fairly good price. She should be able to handle that.
