The top U.S. war commander in Afghanistan is being called to the White House for a face-to-face meeting with President Obama after issuing an apology Tuesday for an interview in which he described the president as unprepared for their first meeting. In the article in this week's issue of Rolling Stone, Gen. Stanley McChrystal also said he felt betrayed and blind-sided by his diplomatic partner, Ambassador Karl Eikenberry. McChrystal's comments are reverberating through Washington and the Pentagon after the magazine depicted him as a lone wolf on the outs with many important figures in the Obama administration. It characterized him as unable to convince some of his own soldiers that his strategy can win the nation's longest-running war and dejected that the president didn't know about his commendable military record. In Kabul on Tuesday, McChrystal issued a statement saying: "I extend my sincerest apology for this profile. It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened." Fox News' Justin Fishel and The Associated Press contributed to this report. I have reasons for the things I do, just don't expect them to be reasonable |

it was politics that lost the war in Vietnam and it will likely be politics to blame if we are unsuccessfull in Afganistan. I believe that any POTUS that makes military decisions should have a military background (some may disagree), leave the soldiering to soldiers.

He screwed up in giving an interview to Rolling Stone, since that rag is, and has always been far left wing.
Even given that, I fully support him. I'd far rather have him running things in Afghanistan than any of the people in the Obama administration.
Now he's probably going to be kicked out of the Army because he dissed the CIC. We all know that Obama's thin skinned and won't cut him any slack, and that everyone working for him has to walk on eggs. Even so, dissing the CIC in public is a career ender for anyone in the military.

i think Stan sorta stepped on it with the Rolling Stones thing as well.. deal is he's actually pretty well liked on the left.. The Brookings institute is the most respected (IMHO) of the center left think tanks, and they really like McChrystal.. Most i read or listen to (obviously mostly right, but i try to do a little CNN and NPR for balance) feel he is the best man for the job, and he's not disputing any of the quotes..
A lot about this thing just doesn't add up.. Is he disgusted with the war?.. I think it's apparent (duh.. since he said it) that he feels he doesn't have the support of the administration.. That being said at that levil four stars do politics as well, maybe better than 10 term congressman so..
Interesting that Obarry has made a deal about this being the "good" war (as opposed to Iraq) during the elections, and yet we all know were going to "draw down" before this thing is won.. If it's even winnable.. No one else has in Afghanistan, and apparently the troops feel it's going to be another Vietnam.. Don't know about you guys, but seems to me that those who are seeing success down the road are in the minority..

Either McChrystal is incredibly naive or this was on purpose. Look at the Krauthammer interview for one view of this. Krauthammer believes the most charitable explanation is that McChrystal was not used to being a public figure. But even that makes no sense to me. Rolling Stone did not screw up here. They actually read the quotes back to make sure they had permission to use them. This went through McChrystal's aides as well as himself and the whole thing was approved every step of the way. Are you telling me NOBODY thought this might cause issues?
In my opinion, impossible. That leads me to believe it was on purpose with McChrystal as the sacrificial lamb. Who comes out ahead after the dust settles? The military. The military took the brunt of criticism over Vietnam and they are not going to let the same thing happen again. Now everyone knows what the real issue is. Obozo and his clowns are interfering with the military to the extent that they are being asked to fight a war with no bullets.
It's really too bad McChrystal apologized. He could have said, "I stand by what I said. Obozo is an idiot and the worst CIC we've ever had. I quit." and then have a couple more generals do the same thing. THAT would be something!

with your asessment. You don't get to be a four star General by shooting your mouth off, anyone who has ever been in the military knows that public discontent of a superior goes straight up the chain of command. There is much more to this than meets the eye.

wanted to leave the military and turn to politics, this is perfect.I'd vote for him.

If he would have said this after he either resigned or was fired he would just be accused of having a beef because he was either asked to resign or fired. No instead i feel he broke protocal to let the American pople know just how screwed up this administration is. He put his whole career on the line as well did some of his aides. He new perfectly well what he was doing and I can't wait to find out what he really has to say in the coming months.
