Micro yet Terminal .17

I have been OTL on firearms lately even though I shoot my pellet rifles on a regular basis. I only shoot .177 and sometimes shoot solids for alley cats and distant pigeons.
Well I was a little pissed when for no reason my .20gr. solid projectiles tripled in price. I always knew the .17 remington was the reason for my bullets originally and never thought the hornaday "come and goes" in .17 would amount to a triple the cost trajectory.
Then I see the .17 Hornet, Fireball, and some name like Varget and open my eyes a bit wider. So a PCP pellet rifle has competition with centerfire rifle cartridges shooting the .17
OH Goodie!
Should I even bother to get on board
I mean you already can't see the bullet hole at 50 feet let alone at 200 yards with the range 25x.
I am intrigued and confused at the same time.
I have heavy barreled .22's for BR 100 activity yet I don't see any such for the .17
I mean my model 52 Win sports a 10 lb barrel on a stock made for clamping in a Sled and Savage and CZ look a bit whimpy for moving a bullet 3000 fps.
Then there are the rimfires(oh noooo)
So what is the consensus on this .17 Hornet? Is this a squirrel blaster like the SWIFT (lol) or just a small game shooter?
