modernizing an AK

After all of the ball busting that I've dished out to people who load their AK's up with crapco plastic, I've decided to join in on the destruction. My objective is to try to make the AK more user friendly/combat effective while keeping the cost down as much as possible and without compromising its inherent reliability.
I'm starting with this:
http://centerfiresystems.com/akagunssr85c-hc.aspx

I ordered the rifle last week, it should arrive shortly.

First thing I'm going to run through the parts to make sure everything is looking good, and replace anything that looks a little sketchy. I plan to change out the stock, which may come with its own set of complications. This receiver's tang is a little different than traditional receivers and may require a little creative workmanship with the dremel. I've already bought a new US palm grip and a FSC47 that I'm going to throw on the end. I think this model already has a G2 trigger, if not, I will be installing one. I'm contemplating adding a Midwest rail like I have on the draco. US palm makes a hybrid of the MWI rail with a low pro T1 mount for a good co witness. I'm not sure how much I'm going to do to it yet. I will have to find a balance between efficiency and cost. I will update this when I have more info.

This set will fit on your rifle if you are looking to stay with a more original looking AK.

I agree, thats the first thing that will go in the spare parts bin. Im not a fan of that stock.. I still haven't decided if I'm going to put a regular synthetic stock on there or a M4 style buffer tube and stock.

thanks for the links. I definitely don't want a poly tube. I'm considering the vltor tube with a ctr stock

love the ctr, good choice.

I'd stick with metal also on the tube, poly unless carbon fiber impregnated would scare me for serious usage.

AK stock

I went with an ace skeleton on a stormwerkz folder. If I don't like the ace, I can add an adapter, buffer tube and AR stock to the folder.

I have the poly tube on at the moment that came with the stock. So far has held up VERY well. Haven't butt-stroked anyone yet, still waiting for a volunteer. Will let you know if it survives.

I have the US Palm grip on mine.....works great. US Palm mags are also pretty nice. How do you like the Midwest rail, I'am thinking about geting one?

shak- yeah, the us palm grip is ok. There mags are seriously over built. I really like them but they're too damn expensive. I only have 2 of them right now. The tapco or steel mags work fine most stuff but I do prefer the us palm. I have a regular midwest rail on a draco that has worked fine. The new one that I put on this rifle is the midwest/us palm combo. I have a T1 on it and its a slick set up. Its the same bottom as the regular midwest, with a different top half. I was worried about mounting the T1 on such a low profile mount for heat reasons, but It holds up fine. I'll have to get around to uploading pics of this rifle after I get her all colored up. Its a pretty sweet set up.

Anyone in the market for an AK should check out the very top link to centerfire. I was really suprised with the rifle. Everything was in great shape and it came with a G2 trigger. Its a good value for $400, but it comes with a awful stock.

right now I have a cheap Tapco just so I could mount a sight. I use the Tapco Mags also, I've just heard stories about them breaking. The main thing I don't like about my Palm Mag is that it doesn't come apart for cleaning.

AK update

It started as this...

This is what the rifle looks like for now…

It has a ACE Stock on a Storm Werkz folder. U.S Plam grip with a U.S Palm/Midwest rail and a T1. PWS FSC47 on the end. I was originally trying to keep the price down, but that’s no fun.
Derek (AZEX) did a great job on the prep work and base duracoat. These pictures don’t do it justice. The flash on the camera gives it gloss look, but it’s really a flat matte. I may add more myself once I decide on the pattern. He also did wonders on the shit plate that was on the rear on the receiver. If anyone needs any AK, FAL, Deawoo work done, he’s the man. Send him a PM or look up his website.

U.S Palm/MWI Rail with T1

Bad camera angle, but this set up provides a good co-witness

Reaper, very sweet AK

What coating you go with?

I'm going to pick up a AK74 Tantal kit and do a build similar to this in the future.

I still love that round and with the folder it makes a good pack gun for sure.

the base is dura with moly on the high wear areas. If I add to it I might stay with dura or look into that KG link you posted

I would like to get a 74 someday as well, but as is, I have a shit ton of x39 rifles and ammo. the storm werks folder seems really solid

folder

I bought the folding mechanism from storm werkz
http://stormwerkz.com/StormWerkz_Stock_Folding_Mechanism.html
and the stock from ACE (8.5 w/ .5 pad)
http://riflestocks.com/store/product3.html

you can buy the folder/stock combo from ace, but I've played with it before and the storm werks seemed a little more solid, so I bought them seperately.
here is the ace stock with ace folder:

Ace stock

The stock was a little hard when I took it out yesterday. I wrapped paracord around it to soften it up a bit… inexpensive cheek weld. I had seen this done before, but never tried it myself.

Raper you know how I feel about putting crapco anything on an AK..........having said that.....Your's ain't to shabby. I'm starting to like SOME of the add ons but very little.

midwest handguard

yea, the MWI hand guard rail is designed to work with a 47 or 74. There may be a few variations that require a little creativeness to get it snug, but for the most part its universal. The version that's on the rifle above has a different top with a low pro mount for an aimpoint T1. They also make different tops to work with a burris fast fire, leupold delta, trijicon's red dot and a few others.

Their regular hand guard has a top with a pici rail that will work with anything (it just won't be a low pro that will co-witness). installation is very easy for either.
