Been thinking about getting another shotgun to keep at the house, Should I go with the Mossberg 500a or the Remington 870. Strictly a house gun. What do you think?

Both are great shotguns for the price. I hava a Mossberg Maverick 88 and it so simular to a good freinds 870 you almost can not tell them appart. You can get all the cool accesories for both, heck for the most part many of them are interchangeable. Mine is for sure a home defense gun it is to short barreled to much shooting of anything but two legged animals. I have ran slugs and 00 buck threw her and she performed great.

I have owned both and both are great. I would go with the one you can get the best deal on. I'm pretty sure you'll find the mossberg cheaper

Both are excellent choices and I have owned both. I currwently own a mav88 and an 870LE. My wife can handle the mossberg better since it is a pistol grip, but the 870 is my baby. The main reason I got the 870 is because I got a desl from an officer who needed money. I got the 870 with all the goodies and a Walther p22 for $250.

Of course I have to be different. Both are good, but the Remington is a bit stronger and the Mossberg 500a has problems with the safety detent spring. The problem does not exist with the 590, though. Either gun will serve just fine, but the Remington has the slight edge in receiver strength and durability.

870's are know for the extractor jambing the fired round. Not an easy fix since the spring is peened in place. My friends has this problem now we have yet to figure out the fix. It's fairly rare however from what I have read.

I have have a Mossberg 835 and have had it for over 10 years now. It's never gave me one bit of trouble and it is the gun I use most for various hunting situations. I love it.

I have a mossberg 500 and my friend Kevin who keeps his guns at my place has a Rem 870. Both guns are GREAT I would be happy with eighther. Mossbergs plus is the screw cap stays with the barrel the 870 plus is the pump handle does not wiggle from side to side like the mossberg. If I were at the gun store and held both I would choose the rem simply becuase I don't care for the slop in the pump.

i will admit i have nothing good to say about remington right off the bat. the safety on the mossbergs is where a safety is suppose to be. i have had them all over the years. there are no remingtons in my safe, but i have 3 mossberg pumps.

Though i have never shot the Rem, I have to say the the Mossberg 500 is my absolute favorite shotgun, I use it for hunting and home defence. I have had my mossy loaded standing up next to my bed for years. if anyone broke into my house im pretty sure they would not leave unscathed... or at all.
