I've shot the XD

but not the M&P. The M&P looks promising. With that extended beavertail, it looks like it'll sit lower in the hand than an XD or a Glock. I'd like to try it out.

I've shot both (M&P in 9mm and .40 and xdm in .40). I personally prefer the xdm but they are both good quality. you should definately hold them both before deciding and try to shoot them both. The M&P felt more like a glock to me (kind of snappy), but I still kind of liked it and the XDM was a little smoother. It also depends what you're going to use it for. for ccw the frame on the M&P will be smaller and more comfortable. Both are good quality and reliable. The XDM has a little better barrel, but for everyday shooting and protection, both barrels are good. If anyone says that one is great and the other is terrible, they're full of shit. it should come down to your preference.

ebear- sig is a great choice, but why a .380? can you ccw in chi-town?
