The name "percussion cap" pertains to:

A. The fact that it pertains a powder. -it does
B. The fact that it goes off from a blow. -it does
C. The fact that it sends out a spark or flame. -it does
D. The fact that it fits a nipple. -it does

I have found notation of all of these answers in my study book!! I know which answer I would say if I were "hypothetically asked", but I WILL NOT GUESS!!!!! So thats why I want a tally!!!

B, is the correct answer.
Same as percussion instruments. They are played by stiking them.

1. PM to you Vaq, and to both of you, this is why I wanted a tally. I cant type all day about what all my book says, but I can only put one answer. When I do finally take the test, I will defonately post the "correct" answer, per my Gunsmith course... Any other takes????????

If you are studying to be a gunsmith in 2010, why does the origin of the name "percussion cap" matter? Really.

Im ok w that actually. Its good to know where you came from, so u can learn either how to adapt and get along with, or tell everybody to screw off and not give a rats ass.... Im glad its teaching me the basic oldie stuff. Ya never know????????????

Sorry ACE

I know the importance of understanding percussion caps and how the work.
But who cares why it's called that.
Kinda like asking why a hammer on a revolver is called a hammer. It don't matter.

It matters because

Like you said there are a lot of beautiful
old guns out there and also there are
a lot of new ones.

In most states I'm acquainted with there is
a black powder hunting season so there
are quite a few black powder people who
might ask this question. You don't want
to look like a dummy and not know.

You also know that as a woman you will probably
be ask a lot of dumb questions just to see if you
know your stuff.

All the answers ask are correct but what they want
to know is why it's called a percussion cap right ?
It explodes when struck
So C is more correct

Back in the day that I worked for a living
I was a Tool & Die maker. I made rubber
and plastic injection molds. I had several
occasions working with women and the
ones who were there for more than
"Just A Pay Check" usually could do better
work than most men I ever worked with
because women pay more attention to
fine detail.

Ace does this help?

A sensitive cap, historically filled with fulminate of mercury, that is struck by the hammer of a percussion weapon, sending a spurt of flame down to ignite the black powder packed behind the ball and patch of a black powder weapon. This technique is still used by rifles, pistols and even cannon.

Here's why I ask........ in my books it states:
pg 10- a mere flame emanating from a percussion cap was used for ignition.
pg 11- It becomes explosive when struck, because KO3(Potassium Nitrate) + Charcoal is percussion sensitive.
pg 12 - percussion cap- Small metallic cup containing fulminating, (exploding or detonating) material, like as used in a toy cap guns. In use, the percussion cap is placed on the end of a nipple.
pg 14 - Nipple- On muzzleloaders- A small metallic tube @ rear of barrel or cylinder through which a flame from percussion cap passes to ignite powder charge.
pg 15 - Percussion- A hammer of a firearm against a powder cap.

The emphasis is on the 'cap'. Nipple has to have a cap or it will just be a flintlock. Hammer has to hit a cap, a device meant to cause a chain reaction. Percussion is what you expect or it will be deemed a failure, ie; miss-fire.

Ha ha .....I said nipple .....I like that word.

I wasn't even trying to be a smarty,,,, I was just being mildly technical because that is what I believe your question is asking. If I were taking the test I would answer B. To me C applies to a flintlock as well so not technically right for the question.

I didn't get the jist of this I will put up all the "B"'s u said in the place of fat chic pics, K????

But you'll do well on the test. I'm very interested in the shotgun mods when you get to those.

Remember the old wheel flintlocks?? They didn't last long aye. I've never even seen one of those. Only on TV

No,, no Queen ,but

I did have a nice day date today with a little young lass that may be coming back around. I got a very nice kiss today outta it. She has been here for a while before when she was recovering from surgery. But then she had one piece of unfinished business and took off for a bit as she healed. But she screwed that all up and really finished that family side of life. She came back because her mother passed a few weeks back,, but before she died she told her to keep me prominently in her life because she saw the better change in her since meeting me. She dated here one more time but I dolled all up and did the 'Charlie' (2 1/2 men) and she soon later gave him his walking papers and has come back around a lot lately. We really are great together. Funny how as big as I am,,,, I like little things.

BUT if you mean the Queen of Gunslot .....that be you baby without question,, you rule. You are just what this place needed. you know that other ain't but a princess. so you da chick queen aye

I may not even be able to mess that up. I've ALWAYS been called "Trouble" from the moment people older than myself placed their eyes on me, Especially @ the VA Hospital, when I took my Dad all every mth from the age of 14 till a little over 4 yrs ago. I always took things apart to see how they worked. But that seemed to ALWAYS cause me trouble, cause I couldnt get them back together just right the first time around. But trust me when I say, "Where there is a will, there IS a WAY!!!!"

One thing I have figured out in my 63 years
is the hardest part to replace will be the
first one to break.

It never hurts to find some paper work on
anything you work on. There is an order
in which parts are to be assembled to
work correctly. I found that out the hard
way too many times.

I worked on a gun a little over a mth ago. Its a POS, (piece of shit) but I was able to pull up the whole owners manual of it online. I printed it off, an BAAMMMM!! I knew what was wrong with it and I fixed it fairly quickly. I have since found that not all guns, or LIFE is like that. BTW the gun was a HP22, A Phoenix Arms .22LR, Saturday Night Special. Thats why I called it what I did.....

I do,,,,, and

I was noticing you were doing a number on yerself worrying about it. On a question I'm sure you already knew the answer but got hung up on the worry and worried yourself right out of the correct answer. It happens. To everyone. But that good belly laugh was just the ticket, you'll be ' back in the pipe 5 by 5 ' now.

I do want to try the shottie questions after you do them. Not during (unless you need us again)

I'm glad you liked my toned down some last story (other wise we would have to raise our age limit here to 21, or 34, ,,or 40 maybe to tell it right. AND no ,, it actually wouldn't be like you may think.

answer is B."percussion" means a strike, blow, etc.but all the other answers do apply but just not to that question fully.

Yes, i know about muzzle stuffers too...

in fact I am working on a muzzle stuffer right now.it is modern in line but it is a pain in my ass.why is it people just cant clean guns when they are done with them?hunting with the gun for a couple months and then sticking it in the closet just doesnt work.this one was fukt.guy pulled it outta the closet and tried to clean it.the rod broke off halfway down the barrel so he brought it to me.said it wasnt loaded.bullshit!it was loaded but had a broke off cleaning rod and jag half way down the barrel.3 hours later i got the rod out.then got the plug out and pushed the powder, and bullet out.was corroded and rusty as hell."can you save it?" was the response.yes I saved it.it shoots just fine at 100 yards but now how do I tell the guy he owes me for over 10 hours of work on a 250 dollar gun at 45 an hour labor charge?he will pay it but he will bitch about it at the same time.

so ya wanna be a gunsmith...

Vaquero, I do think he's correct, because percussion (hit, blow, strike) is the action, to set off the rest of the other actions. Thus, percussion cap. like Vaquero said "Same as percussion instruments. They are played by stiking them."
Vaquero, you just can't call a hammer " that thingieee, that hits the other thingeee on the nipple.
I said NIPPLE too!!!
percussion "Cap" is the Instrament that is being struck. they shudda just called it a "strik cap'"

The total tally was 9-B's and 3-C's. When I take the test, I WILL put B. As soon as I take it, I will post my test results, and the correct answer. Thanks to all of you that helped!!!

The definition of "percussion" is the striking together of two parts from which vibration, sound, or shock is produced. It doesn't matter that the fuel is a powder; it's not called a 'black powder cap." It doesn't matter that it creates a spark or flame afterwards; it's not called a "flame cap." It doesn't matter that it is put in a nipple; it's not called a "nipple cap." The key point is that you hit it to make it work, and that's why it is called a "percussion cap." Perhaps this is a little bit tricky, but it's still a legit multiple choice.

I once had to study to be a CNE: a Certified Novell Engineer, an out-of-date computer certification. All the tests were like that, the hardest I've ever taken and that's when the answer is staring back at you. Whoever says multiple choice tests are easy has never taken a well done one.

I TOOK THE TEST!!!!!

The answer is "B". Because Fulminates are percussion sensitive. And for the record, I did look in the dictionary. If I were hypothetically asked that Q, I would've said "B", because of that same reason, but if the comment I posted was read, as far as everything else my study guide stated about percussion caps, then anyone could've seen my dilemma. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE HELP GUYS!!!!

Hi Ace, just one small comment on an earlier post that was left for you concerning Black Powder.
I am not a black powder shooter, (yet). But checking the inside of the bore depth, then comparing it to the outside length, Get a nice selection of wooden dowel rods at most any hardware store. (ACE comes to mind) sorry could not resist, smiling now.

Your bottom bore depth will be where the nipple screws in.The powder has to burn from the bottom of the breech out.I figure you already know that.
