He was a farmer in western Tn (Henderson County) during the civil war.
When the had word that soldiers were coming (either side) he took his
family to a place in the woods above the farm for protection.
One day it sounded like the soldiers were gone so he steps out of the
woods to see and was shot in the hip by a soldier who was by his barn.
This was an 800+ yard shot up hill. He did live but was lame all his life
(88 years)
I'll never know what kind of rifle that was but would like to have one.
I'm pretty sure it was a rifled Union musket.

I would have hated to have been shot during the civil war. They amputated everything...gangrene everywhere... that must have been awful

a copy of a book this man wrote during the war.
It was published in 1867. He was a travaling preacher
and covered 5 states in his travels. He tells of the
1st train he ever rode and how great it was.
