My son will be leaving for his first deployment to Iraq next month. I would like to give him something to take with him he will need or want. Any of you have any ideas?
I am thinking of a good knife and maybe a sat phone. He is going to be a father in Jan. Maybe you guys have better ideas?

Ideas

The best thing to is make sure he has an I-Pod and books. No matter what he's doing the I-Pod always comes in handy. I am currently in Iraq and wish I had one. But its all good I am coming home in about a month. Also, there is not much you can give him before he leaves. The PX's have the necessary items but once he is there, care packages of snacks and munchies go a looooong way! Just make sure he knows that anything he needs you will happy to be there for and send SOMETHING at least once a month. It doesn't even matter what it is. Just getting something out here makes your day so much better. I wouldn't of even minded getting a box full of packing noodles. Just to see someones name you know on a package for you is enough. Hope this helped.

I can't endorse the shade. We have to wear ballistic shades out here and we are issued some that work just fine.

shades

Actually the only reason I had said that was you were talking about "old Oakley" like the aviators or something. We are, depending on the time you get issued stuff and what supply has on hand, issued Oakley shades. I had a pair for my first deployment, until the got decimated. We also get the brands ESS and Wiley X. I don't like Wiley X but love the fit of ESS.

private stock

it would be a liability. we want to make sure you are issued something that works and is relaible (with proper training). most private firms won't even let you bring your own weapon. USE THE RIFLE THAT YOU ARE ISSUED BOY!!

I really wanted to thank you all for the great ideas. I have decided to send him a new digital camera and a Gerber Multi-Tool (I use mine every day).
We will also be sending pictures and letters at least once a month.

As far as the give him a gun to take idea, he has been issued some really nice equipment. Besides, there is a difference between a weapon and a gun. One is for fighting and one is for fun. That, and he also has quite a few guns at home. I just wanted to give him something unique.

To all of you over there all ready, I thank you and I pray for you every evening. It is a lot different than it was when I was over there in 90 and 91.

I hope you the best and good luck.

hankintexas........... i'm just south of ya in brazoria, s on hwy288. anyways, i was in the desert for a while, if someone hasnt suggested yet, i would recomend baby wipes, not the girly scented ones but the regular ones. the sand over there is a pain in the ass and it helps to have them to clean your face (and other areas) off. you dont always have a chance to take a shower, but those wipes could be carried in a pocket if neccessary. just a couple more ideas off the top of my head, cards, dominoes, other games, and cigeretts, even if your son doesnt smoke, he'll be a celebrity to his buddies who do if he passes them around. books are good, anything comical, its hard to get a laugh over there. and of course lots of letters and pictures from home

Good choice

The camera is a good choice, I did not take one and until the PX got there I was unable to take pictures and send home, the Gerber will get used a lot I went through several. I would also suggest a lot of mail and pictures depending on his internet access, my wife would write to me almost every day although you usually get a stack every couple of weeks.

That way he can stay in touch and not worry about paying for calls...one from AAFES is good if you have access...otherwise any will do (rechargeable).
