My XD hates me.

As im sitting here logged into gunslot while a friend of mine is having a "good ol time" with my XD-45acp...I get a call..." Ummm dude your slide is stuck on your xd"..After he gets to my house with the wounded weapon i begin the questioning....."loads used"? ..hornady 230 grain.." K what the hell happened???" of course he doesn't know..It looked like it had been mauling the tops off of the cartridges. The weapon was clear of all rounds though and i didn't see any pieces of cartridge lodged anywhere. So i call the gun shop I am loyal to and of course my guy isn't there it is the help..He says " Oh that happens with XD's from time to time. You need to put a towel down on your table and just slam the gun down real hard on back of the slide it should release." ummm????? Regardless of rounds not being present to the eye this sounds like the worse advice ever. I looked this up and i see people actually doing this to they're seized XD..I would like to know if anyone has any safer less damaging thoughts around this or maybe an answer to why this has happened after 800+rounds and religious maintaining..Or should i just use my friends head as the surface in which i slam my gun..

My suggestion

sell the damn thing. Last thing you want is a weapon that "siezes" on occasion. Because you know it will at the exact same time you need it the most.

XD,

if it were I, I would do as LBC suggests and have the factory fix it under warranty and then relegate it to plinking duty (I amass guns, I don't sell them) and get something else for CCW duty. I would never trust a weapon that had such a failure to be my CCW, but that's just me.

XD....I hadn't heard of that problem. Seems like you would do more damage banging the slide off that way. I agree with Hamp, I'd get something else to carry but I'd keep it to shoot around with. It's against my religion to sell guns.

never heard of that either. I know 3 people who have put thousands of rounds through theirs with no problems

I have also never heard of this "failure". I know at least 2 guys that have never cleaned their weapons to see how long they last (instructors). One had to change out the extractors at 80-90k rounds, but they never had this failure.

I have an XD45 and the XDm9. Around 7k though the 45 and 2k through the 9 without a single malfunction. I have not heard about the slide banging either. Have heard nothing but good comments on the XD's. A shot friends P220 which jammed 2-3 times per clip. I wouldn't use it for a boat anchor let alone to protect me and mine. xd issue solved

Turns out it was a bad load..a little piece of cartridge was sheared off during the slides ejection phase somehow.just enough to jam up the works. Since finding and fixing the problem I have put 60+ rounds through no prob.Still a bit weary of it but hell it seems fine now..We also have a theory that this intruder may have been lodged in the clip and did it's dirty work from there, since the mauled cartridge remains to be seen..

XD's

i have owned 3 of them, shot 1000's of rounds between them all and have never had a malfunction with either of them. advise..... strip the mags down every 500 round or so and clean inside of the bodys and wipe of the follower's clean and oil light on mag spring then wipe off and make sure it is clean and dry. keep drop of oil on the metal inserts of the frame, lightly coat the surfuce of the frame also where the slide meets the frame. and of coarse as the last guy said always use good factory range ammo. american eagle(federal) fiocchi is also good stuff, my xd's ate it up. speer lawman fmj ammo also is very good. Xtp's hornady for carry ammo(tAP) 147gr. my favorite for the nine and 230gr for the 45, if you can find the standard xtp, brass cased carry the or try the 230gr. +p. this stuff rocks. shot it in drywall mud (usg jointcompound) always expanded and penetrated just enough in the stuff 6-8" norm.

i' d try

differant mags and make sure they all work fine . my opinon it sounds like the brass was brittle and some may have flaked off in the action . was it reloads ? if so id check the brass some times after a few reloadings the brass will get stiff and brittle, old brass or poor quility brass will give you problems some times

Yes it was a re-load . That was not brought to my attention until after the fact. however yes they were reloads and it makes a lot more sense. I didn't even think to ask because I personally do not reload cartridges. Not because I am against it just because I do not have the knowledge or tools to do so..You were dead-on though..

That is not normal at all!

I own 3 XD's and carry an XD9M everyday...

I have also sold literally hundreds of them as well and NEVER ONCE heard anyone complain about one.

Send it in to Springfield ASAP if your problems persist after a good cleaning and don't beat it up. We would as a dealer take care of this for you if you had purchased it from us, so ask your dealer to remedy the situation if it is a new purchase...

TL

PS: Now I see your issue was resolved... That makes sense... Good luck with it now!

XD Issues

Just saw your thread. Glad you got it fixed.

Funny story.....Had a customer call me today with an XD service 9 that was locked up. He couldn't get the slide off to clean it. I told him to bring it by and wouldn't you know.....

HE TOOK THE FREAKIN PINS OUT OF THE FRAME ALONG WITH THE TAKEDOWN LEVER, then he tried to pull off the barrel.

Needless to say it was a royal pain in the dick getting the gun appart and back together. I had to beat the barrel out of the locking block with a nylon punch because he had the feed ramp jamed into the gap in the locking block. As soon as the slide did come off parts went everywhere.

Needless to say he paid the Mechanical Asshole Tax (MAT). This is applied to all guns that come dissassembled in a box or a bag as a result of pure stupidity. It is a good thing there isn't a IQ test or Common Sense apptitude test to buy a gun.

Oh well. So goes life. Glad you got your XD back up. They are reliable guns, just a bitch to work on. I could have fixed 10 glocks in the time it took me to fix that XD once.

I had the same problem with my XD .40.It was definatly the ammo...Only my problem was not with reloads. It was Winchester White Box. It kept jamming and Stove-Piping.I sold it and got a Sig, and lived happily ever after.....If you decide to keep it.....cut its nutts off so it can't reproduce,
