Need Help With a Scope
A coworker is in the market for a scope for his .300 Win Mag to shoot at long range. He's willing to go 600-700 dollars. The two I've found so far are the Nikon Monarch 4-16x 50mm for $489 and the Leupold MK2 6-18x 40mm for $649. Any others or thoughts on these two? "I have always been a soldier. I have known no other life. The calling of arms, I have followed from boyhood. I have never sought another." From The Virtues of War, by Steven Pressfield.

If you had 500 - 600 dollars, I am sure that you would buy new tires for the old mobile home and move outta west Virginny... LOL

I see what your saying. But why do i need a scope thats 500 bones. Im not a sniper yet.
coldfront
I would go with the nikon only because of all the digital camera equipment and optics i have from them, Brilliant

You don't have to be a sniper to want quality optics. Paying more now for good quality will save you money in the long run when you have to buy another cheap scope after your first one shits the bed. For a good scope to use at long ranges, 500 dollars isn't much considering the amount of adjustments you will be making based on all the factors at 1000 meters. A crappy scope will go tits up from the constant elevation and windage adjustments alone.

ok but still aint paying 500 bucks for one

Gunsatcost.com has a Leupold Scopes
Leupold VX-III Rifle Scope, 55186, Black, 8.5X-25X, 50MM, 5 Inch Eye Relief, 30MM Tube Diameter, Fine Duplex Reticle $771.99 which is a great scope for the price. If your friend is shooting a 1,000 I would mount a 20 MOA base to the rifle to with the scope.

I'm glad you are not buying the scope for my M310R rifle then. The Nightforce NXS 5.5x22x56mm scope is only $1,568 for the scope.LOL

They can keep it as well!!!!

Hello runaway, go to natchezshooterssupply.com they have a close out on a bunch of scopes, maybe you won't have to spend that kind of money, but for a good solid scope the leupolds mk3 series are pretty tough and guareenteed. they have a great line of variables and objectives, (the gold line) also weaver have some decent scopes too depending on the model.redfield scopes are worth looking at also. All strong scopes for the caliber, make sure you match it up right and with the proper base and rings too.

Why spend a car payment on a scope you will hardly use?
fordvg
I guess you don't shoot like I do.LOL US Optics have a scope that is $3,200 and if you want a night vision scope you will spend $9,000 for it.

When I started shooting with a scoped rifle I went cheap cause that is what I could afford. I eventually worked my way up to better optics. I picked up that first rifle with the cheap optics on it the other day, and what a difference. The old scope just looked like it was CHEAP, my Nikons just blew it out of the water. Yes you can learn to shoot well with a cheap scope, but you can shoot a heck of a lot better with better optics. I am not saying spend the kids college money on a good optic. What I do is spend 500-700 on the scope, and make sure I have a good range finder. Next is practice, I have seen yuppies at the range with their 5000-10000 set-ups that can not shoot to save their lifes. I can shoot circles around them using my 1500 set up. I really like my Nikon optics, Leupold is a great optic to, but I just like the clearity of the Nikons.

Amen to that. I have a cheap scope on my AR that won't hold zero for nuthin'
undeniable
that never did zero. If I hold the tartget right in the corner of on the upper right side of the crosshairs, thats dead on. It's a simmons that came as a package o a Savage I bought. So I have to agree that you do get what you pay for. Go with a Bushnell, Nikon, Leupold or something like that, it's to me the best value. Leupold VX II 3X9, they're in the $300.00 range.
