New AR in cabinet

Howdy, GS. How's all? Just reporting in to say I finally got a black rifle. I've been eying this DPMS Sportical .223/5.56 at Wal-Mart for $640 for a while now and finally bought it. It's no frills and (currently) has no optics. But the kid and I took it out to the lease and pull the trigger. It went bang, so we repeated a couple hundred more times. So far pretty happy with it.

I'm still trying to make a decision on the sights. I'm thinking I want iron sights with the classic carry handle rear and front post. Any argument as to why that would be stupid?

Eventually, I'd LOVE to have FLIR nightvision on it, but that would be right after I win the lottery.

On a side note, anyone else noticing ammo is making a come back? I found 124gr FMJ 9mm last weekend. The cheap range ammo. I haven't seen that in quite a while.

Optics

My 1st AR had top rails that I put a holographic red dot sight on. For most shooting they work fine, I have seen people spend all sorts of money on fancy optics. However, my 2nd AR has the classic carry handle open peep sights, I have more fun shooting that one. However, some people just like to spend money.

Cool

Glad you like the AR. I agree with the cap'n, you can spend lots of money on optics. If you do get into optics get some good one and save by not buying the BS ones.

Ammo has been much more available, but not .22 ammo and I don't know what the reason is for that. I heard that some .22 ammo was being produced at 6 million rounds a day but I don't know if that is true or not, probably internet BS.

I did run into 125 g38+p HP for 18.00 per 50 rounds, bought one box. Went back 2 weeks later and the same ammo was selling for 26.00 a box. Crap.

Anyway good to see you on here again.

Ammo

Just picked up some .223 $400 for a 1,000. The cheapest I ever got it before was $360 for a 1,000. The .22 shortage still confuses me, since I can buy all the 9mm, 40 cal, 45, .223 etc.

.22 scarce

Yeah, that boggles me as well. A couple years back I would have laid money that .22 would be the most available ammo always. I guess with ammo prices up, lots of people are breaking out their 22s to save money at the range.

.22's

That is the reason I got when I looked into it as well.

.22s

It makes sense. But something still doesn't jive. I may be wearing a tin-hat, but that doesn't mean there ISN'T some conspiracy behind this.

22's

I would go down the conspiracy road as well, except it's .22's. I still have about 1,000 left.

.22's

On ammoman.com, 325 22 LR for $84. free delivery to most states in the US. Still a little high, but available, I just bought 1000 .223 and 500 45's from them.

AR Optics

OK, I finally decided on an optic for the AR. I got the Trijicon RX30A-51.

I was more pricey than I wanted to drop on a sight, but after getting hands on and looking at all the options, this is the one that I really wanted. I look at some Burris, EOTech, and even Bushnell had a couple of decent ones, but I liked the eye relief, field of view, ease of acquisition, the fact it doesn't need a battery, and the parallax free view on this.

I'm sighting in this weekend. I'll keep y'all updated.

AR Optic update

I got it sighted in. Zeroed at 50yds (200 meter BZO). Not a precision target rifle, but anything with a 5" target area out to 250 yards is getting hit. I tested it at various ranges. It's GTG.

You were sighting it in at the lease?
The loggers are still messing around here and the land owner has a man on a caterpillar doing dirt work, don't know when it'll be safe to use my back yard range.
The 14 year old helped me working on my car yesterday, I was going to pay him by getting CO2 for his paint ball gun. No CO2 yet but after searching high & low I finally figured out who DOES NOT carry it (grrrrr). Oh well, I'm off to Bentonville now, maybe I'll get lucky there LOL!

Yep, a couple of weeks ago. Last weekend, I took the kid out hunting. Didn't see crap, animals were hunkered down good. Sunday morning, though, we were at a blind on top of a high hill overlooking an old, fallow wheat field. Didn't see anything except some turkey (but not season yet, :( ), so after we gave up, we played with the AR.

Took some 300 yd shots at various landmarks. On target. So we turned our attention to a steel plate hung on a tree at the end of the field. About 550-600yds I'd guess. Kid took a shot, way high and a little left. Over compensated the kentucky windage. Funny though, 'cause he hit the tops of a copse of trees out between us and the plate and, apparently, some turkeys were hiding out in there. Scared the shit out of them and they ran from the copse to the treeline.

Anyway, second shot a little low. Saw the dirt kick up on the ground. He adjusted this and, ping, 3rd shot was the charm.

So I gave it a try. I also was high on the first shot. Guess not as much drop as I thought. 2nd shot was a miss. I couldn't even tell where it hit. No dirt, no anything.

I might have hit on the second, because when we went down to look at the plate, There were several rusty dents and a couple of unrusted, small dents that had to be 5.56. One, I'm sure was his hit, so I'm thinking the other was my 2nd shot.

Good times, though.

No probs mounting it?
BTW, I have a Trijicon pistol sight set, brand new but out of date, I'd like to sell.
I'll post it this afternoon sometime.

Nope, easy as pie. Came with flattop mounting, so just screw it in the picatinny rail.
