I have a old rifle that was given to me by my grandfather. He said it is a lee Enfield 303 british but it has no english markings. I think it is a mosin nagant. It has russian cryllic letters on it and was made in 1895. How can I be sure what it is?

does it look like this
nagant 91/30:

or this
enfield:

(notice differences in magazines and bolts)

There are different variations of each... but most of the distinguishable characteristics stay the same.

Also, just because it doesn't have english markings doesn't mean its not an enfield, both rifles were eventually produces by a few different countries.

It definatly does't look like a enfield but all pictures I have seen of the nagant the only difference is the sling holder on the butt of stock does't go through the wood on the stock it has a square metal loop.

definitely sounds like a mosin nagant model 91/30.these guns are chambered for a 7.62x54R (rimmed) cartridge.i have heard of them being rechambered in .303 British.both cartridges use the same bullet and are rimmed but they are different.take your gun to a competent gunsmith for a safety inspection before shooting and to figure out the right cartridge.
