This is definitely off topic... I'm sure most of you have noticed that when I post I have the signature line as "Doc" and I bet one or two of you have asked, huh why does he call himself doc. Well this is the question I want to ask, when is a person deserving enough to take on the title "Doc" I have a few definitions that I personally consider as Doc material So just a little background on the subject, I got the nickname shortly after coming to college, with in my first couple weeks I had provided first aid to people who had gotten themselves into some bad states... like broken legs, OD's, alcohol poisoning, etc... And my friends felt I should be dubbed Doc... When I returned to Pittsburgh on break and ran some calls with my old ambulance company, and the asst. chief started calling me Doc randomly one day, when I returned this year to visit mostly everyone in the company was calling me Doc along with most of the firefighters from my station also. This nickname grew on me without me pushing it forward at all. I question though whether or not I'm worthy of it. Someone I've know for a while decided to pose the question in a spiteful manner "that I'm not actually a real doctor" This is why I want to ask the question... Do ya'll have an opinion on the subject? Who's worthy of being a "doc" and if you all feel that my signature is not appropriate I shall remove it on request. Doc |

From what you do and are learning in school and you are an EMT. I have no problem with it. We can hospital corpman in the Corp, Doc's. You just are not in the military. I have no problem with calling you Doc!!!
TacDoc
Thanks fordvg,
I don't mean to sound whiny or anything, but it is something I have to question...
Anonymous
dub thee Doc!
fordvg
It sound like with the jobs you do and what you are learning in college the nickname Doc fits you.
Ebear
NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT TITLE.I STUDIED THAT ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO......THEY DID'NT PAY ENOUGH, AND THE WAIT FOR PARAMEDIC WAS 2 YEARS..BUT I TRIED IT FOR AWHILE AND YOU HAVE MY HIGHEST RESPECT. YOU ARE A EMT.A EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNITION.....NOT A DOCTOR.BUT YOU CALL YOURSELF WHATEVER YOU WANT........GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!
LLE
and opinion/conclusion.
Unless I have misinterpreted or misread something, TacDoc never pretended to be a graduate MD, or for that matter, a graduate PhD, DSc or LLD or the like.
Therefore he has not represented himself as something he is NOT. That being the case, it is my opinion that we get to call him what we want to call him, just like a lot of people call me SOB [meaning Bachelor of Scientific Opinion, as I have been told]. So, if he does not mind being called "Doc", then we are all OK.
TacDoc
Ahhh LLE I always enjoy your "short" lectures. ha ha.
Mostly I always seem to end up on your side in a debate, and you usually cover all the points I seem to neglect.
LLE
WHAT'S UP, DOC!?
TacDoc
Yeah ebear I know what you're saying it's cool as long as I don't start performing surgeries or something before I'm allowed to... And I agree, in fact with the campus police here I have standing orders to assist a patient within my scope of practice until pretty much until EMS arrives... and even them I'm still doing stuff cause they all know me and trust me.
It is quite the kick in the nuts for someone to judge you especially on a topic you are trying to master... it would be like someone telling any of us we don't know anything about guns...
I apologize about wasting time with this one, I posted this in a bit of anger.
Ebear
LIKE I WAS SAYING, I TRIED IT AND IT IS A HARD JOB, AND I RESPECT THE HELL OUT OF YOU.JUST TRY TO STAY OUT OF COURT,LOLOLOL
Ebear
ITS A FREE COUNTRY
TacDoc
Yea the courts are always in my mind nowadays.. I just finished a book about Law and Emergency Care, and it's just about all these physicians getting sued left and right, and it's all about how you are going to get sued, who can sue you, and how much you're gonna lose... and i'm paranoid that like the FEB is behind me following my every move ha ha
LLE
the "FEB"??
TacDoc
Sorry LLE in the new version of Miami Vice they refer to the FBI as the FEB, I used it as to inject some humor into that statement
Ebear
IT WAS THAT WAY 20 YEARS AGO.....IF I WOULD'VE WANTED TO PURSUE IT , I COULD HAVE DONE HELICOPTER RESCUE, BUT THEY WANTED ME TO JOIN THE COAST GUARD ANDI WAS MARRIED WITH MY FIRST CHILD ON THE WAY........SO I TURNED IT DOWN.
TacDoc
I understand the money issue. I know that i wouldn't be able to support my gun addiction on a EMT's salary. Money was a reason i decided to go to med school, that and I was sick of walking into an ER and hearing every language but english from the employees.
but seriously i went because i do not agree with the way doctors treat patients nowadays... and i know that my voice would not be heard without a degree in my hands, sad but necessary
but I respect you ebear for the fact you went to at least try... most people don't ever try because it was just a childhood dream or something like that, most people who end up going are the ones who truly care about human lives
coldfront
this forum is silly... so it fits right in here i quess

Doc is just a cool nickname... I don't recall you ever claiming a doctorate degree... I have thought about going back for mine in Psychology, only 2 more years and I would be done, but my education has not ever been used for more than personal evolution and going through another graduate program sounds like a lot more work that I have time and patience for at this point...
I think everyone should call a person with a Master's Degree "MASTER"! I think that would be pretty cool....
Right this way master... Excuse me master...
Haa haa haa!
