Have a new 1911. It has the old military type sights. I like the night sights I have on my other 1911 but I was wondering..why not just get laser grips and keep the stock sights. It seems the crimsons could have some serious advantages. Besides the fact that the laser gives away your location, what are the down sides to lasers. What are the pros and cons of night sights and lasers? I have night sights but have never had crimson trace grips. They look useful..what's the real deal?

Training and eyesight play some pretty serious roles here. I can see my sights and I can focus on multiple planes quickly, so night sights are the best choice for me. Once I get to the point where I can't use my sights because of old age or other source of sight degredation, then laser sights or slide-mounted red dot sight will be what I go with.

I have used Lasergrips and Lasermax lasers, and I am faster getting on target with open sights than with lasers, because that's how I have trained.

Some may say, and support with valid arguments, that your tendency will be to focus on the threat rather than sights in a high-stress environment, and therefore using a laser projected onto the target will actually be faster since you'll already be looking at the target anyway.

This is a valid point, and one I am inclined to agree with, if you don't have massive amounts of training that "reconditions" you to operate differently.

People, even knowledgeable instructors, may cite the psychological advantage of having a laser dot on a bad guy's chest, but I put this in the same category as racking the slide on a shotgun in hopes of scaring off a burglar; it may work, but I'm going to assume otherwise so I don't get caught off guard if and when it doesn't.

Laser sights have come a long way since the days when The Terminator was chasing Sarah Connor with that AMT pistol that had the ten-ton laser tube on top of it. Some remain unconvinced, but as long as you train with your selection, they can be very effective.

good points

Yeah I don't know how I would do with lasers having used sights since i was five. It seems my sights are on target as my arms are extending almost without thought. But the commercials for lasers seem so compelling. Good point about the eye sight as I am not getting any younger

I use night sites for two reasons. I can see then just fine at night and in light I can pick them up faster because they are a larger white dot. Which is always good, though I do not actually get my pistol up all the way to look through the sites most of the time unless what I am shooting is farther than 45 feet.

I had a retired NYC LEO tell me about a guy he had too shoot. There was a call at the projects about a guy with a gun shooting it into the air and three officers responded. He came around the back of a building and it was pitch black at night and he see's glowing dot's about four feet off the ground. Pulled his gun and commanded the guy to drop his weapon but the dork turned on him and found out he was not all that good with a gun to begin with, Jim shot him.

So if someone gets behind you they can see where you are possibly.

I still use them and always will.

But CT Grips are sweet for sure, you never have to lift your weapon higher mid chest and you just squeeze off your shots when that dot hits the point you want that bullet to hit. So if can be very fast and dead on...

I'll get a pair for sure and put them on at least my wifes 9 mm and possibly my SP01.

No sir, he fell into that bullet... Never argue with a stupid person. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!!

hey isd

I am leaning towards the laser. I really shoot the military sights quite well in daylight. Can't see them at all at night. I really like the night sights I have on my sig gsr though. But, I will get lasers for this one because it will need a pair of grips anyway. I don't like the ones that came with it. so its not like I have really awesome grips that I have to take off to install the crimsons.. thanks guys for making some good points to help me make up my mind

get both if you want

The first thing I do when after buying a new handgun is to put night sights on it if it doesn't already have them.
