Iowa became a shall issue from a may issue this past spring and the sheriff in Dubuque is very tight with issuing ccws. i am taking the course that will qualify me as of the 1st of the year. Right now he is turning everyone down even if you took the new class, no reason given. Which under current law is allowable.

one dude saying yay or ney to a CC permit, sounds like the law 'really' hasn't changed in reality, just in the way it is written.

Anyone who can LEGALLY own a firearm and goes through the training shall be issued a ccw. It is no longer up to individual sheriffs, as of 1/1/11 its state law. This explains it better than I
DES MOINES – Gov. Chet Culver today signed legislation that will make Iowa a “shall issue” state when it comes to county sheriffs issuing permits to acquire or carry a concealed weapon.
“This bill strikes an appropriate balance” between citizens’ rights to bear arms and the need for law enforcement officers to maintain public safety.
County sheriffs will lose much of their discretion in denying concealed weapons permits.
The bill, which takes effect Jan. 1, would create uniform standards in all 99 counties for issuing permits to carry a concealed weapon in public. It will require sheriffs to issue a permit to carry firearms to all applicants unless they are subject to certain specific disqualifiers.
Under current law, sheriffs can issue or deny permits. Their standards vary with some issuing permits to nearly everyone who applies and some denying nearly all applications. Nearly 35,000 Iowans have concealed carry permits, according to lawmakers.
Chris Rager, an Iowa lobbyist for the National Rifle Association, said today’s action signifies the first time in nearly a century that a major step has been taken to enhance the right-to-carry freedoms of Iowans. He said the NRA-backed legislation will allow law-abiding Iowans the right to carry without being subject to the subjective discretion of individual sheriffs, changing Iowa from a “may-issue” state to a one of 38 “shall-issue” states.

Good luck in getting your CCW before the first of the year. Your sheriff is a real asshole.
I moved to UT from PA. In Montgomery Cty, you applied for a CCW, and unless you had a record or were insane, you got one. Our sheriff was an NRA Life Member. That was true in most counties. In Philadelphia Cty, you had to be connected in order to get a CCW approved. The city & county of Philadelphia were, and remain, extremely anti-gun.

R3bauer, I hope it's true, and they don't throw a surprise of extremely small print at you. Like, if you apply for a ccw, we will invade your house without warning every time there is a private sector shooting and ballistics test your weapon.

LMFO!!!!!!!

Hamp you are right! The legal owners of weapons get treated worse than criminals.

it's rediculous!

if you're going to carry a .45, don't qualify with a .22. If you are ever forced to use deadly force in self defense you want to be able to prove that you are proficient with your weapon selection. Qualify with a similar caliber that you expect to carry (doesn't have to be the same, just close). Also, the main thing you want to take away from it is knowing when and where you are able to carry concealed and what circumstances you are justified to use deadly force.

I appreciate your advice. Ecaman your right he to busy worrying when Obozo will sign off on his US Marshal papers. Sad thing is hes a former Marine. This past year we had an officer get shot, a pawn shop owner put thru the ringer for shooting at someboy that came to his shop, threatened him and his daughter and the ones that got shot got a vigil!!

I would be in prison if they or anyone came storming into my house just my nature. You know what I mean?

congrats to Iowa for that! that "may issue" was bullshit here to for a while,i had a sheriff that took pride in not issuing permits back when MN was a "may issue"state. As far as the CCW class goes, find out in advance if they want you to bring a gun,my class didn't,we used range supplied 22s,6 shots at about 15 ft.and that was it.The rest was all class work, but we were each given a DVD containing all the information that was given in the class as well as lots of useful info on legal ramifications of shooting, reciprocal agreements between states, etc. Now if we can get Wisconsin to see the light.

I did use a .22 but I am well versed in the 9mm, .40, and .45 right now though lack of discretionary funds forced me to use a range rental I will post pics later. It was a very informative class.

you can carry any gun you want to and take the cc class with any thing you want most guys use 22 because they say to bring 150 rounds to class God knows why i sure dont lol i used my gold cup had 3 9mm and the rest were 22s depends on the state and laws and i napped most of the class lol

we sat thru the class and then had to shoot 5 from bench rest and five from standing @15ft
