The "your favorite gun" thread of Lucky's got me thinking about the different firearms i've owned in the past 50 plus years.. Some of the oddest have been a hoot, and i'm betting you guys have had the same experiences..
I'll lead off.. back in the mid 80's i had a Universal 30 carbine.. this was before AR's and AK's became popular, and of course i hung everything i could on it, from folding stock thru bipod on the front.. The neat thing was that the local indoor range in Tucson (the shootist on 29th) let me blast away with it, and out side of the ammo cost it was a great little carbine..
ok so i thought a great idea would be to have a handgun in the same caliber.. (obviously watched to many westerns growing up where the Winchester was the same 32-20/44-40/or 45LC as the Colt) anyway about this same time Ruger had their Blackhawk out in 30 carbine..
i justified this as an inroad into silhouette shooting.. This was back before the days of uncle Mike and ballistic nylon so it also meant an expensive shoulder holster.(pretty sure it was one of John Bianchii's)
Being a rimless cartridge, the Blackhawk depended on a perfect chamber in the cylinder as opposed to having an sorta half moon clips ala the 1917.. This of course meant that every other round of hand load... didn't.. actually they would load, but invariably the cylinder would lock up when the round came in contact with the frame..
So there i am with my expensive to own, "AND" shoot 30 carbine Blackhawk. The first time i went out to the range told me this piece was not going to blast any steel rams.. the 30 carbine round was designed for a 16" bbl.., at 7.5 mine was sorta like an Iowa class battleship going off..
In any sort of dark conditions you could see this HUGE ring of unburnt powder.. and the blast was beyond belief.. Can't remember much about the recoil, except i didn't like it either.. So the first time i tried to bust a ram from the creedmore position i singed my pant legs, and couldn't hear for a couple days..
I could however use the same ammo as the Universal.. only problem was i didn't have an easy way to carry it, and it looked WAY dorky stripping off a magazine to feed the Black hawk..
That's one.. another is my little freedom arms .22 that i sometimes forget in my pants and run thu the washer.. That my friends is NOT an embellished story.. I took the grips off the little guy and wrapped electrical tape around the frame.. it really is so lite you can forget it.. I often have..
Ok.. nuff about me.. Lets here it my friends.. weird or wonderful your oddest..
a man has to hold his word, hold his beliefs, and hold a good sight picture.
