I have been told that NJ Governor Chris Christie has ordered flags to half mast in "honor " of Whitney Houston's death.

And here I had been given to understand that Christie was a good conservative, who reveres the USA, and may be a candidate for VP on the Republican ticket.

We have troops fighting and being KIA every day, and they apparently do not rate a proclamation for half staff. We have countless military heroes who HAVE fought and died for our country, and they never rated half staff---How in the name of logic and patriotism does this Governor come to such a conclusion?

If this story is true, Christie has at the very least, alienated almost every Veteran in the USA, let alone New Jersey, and IMO, his political relevance and intelligence must be questioned!!

I agree. Having the flag at half mast is for heads of state, people who have made great contributions to humanity, national tragedys like 911. Not for pop stars. Otherwise tthe flag would be at half mast every other day for singers, comedians sports figures et al.

Well LLE, they

give a ticker tape parade for the Giants because they won the 'super bore', so flying the flag at half mast for Whitney doesn't seem so strange given the atmosphere these days......It's a fucking disgrace if you ask me!

I'm just shaking my head here.. Everyone of you guys has another point that makes it a foolish, and clearly political decision.. Does anyone think for a SECOND that if NJ didn't have a huge black population this wouldn't happen... Yes this guy has been mentioned (i've really liked him till now as well) as a POTUS possibility..Given that the convention might be "brokered" for the fist time in my adult life he could still be a consideration.. What troubles me is i'm afraid he did this out of political motivation, or gave in to appease.. in either event it's wrong..

I wonder if we should have military service as a criteria for the Nations top office..

Contemplating this act of idiocy and disrespect for our REAL HEROES, I am literally sickened to the point that....................

I MAY VOMIT !!

As a long time former resident of New Jersey, I will be compelled to express my disdain, and some other forms of disapproval to the Mr. Christie.

If he is contemplated as a candidate for POTUS or VPOTUS, I will work tirelessly, against him.

I keep thinking about "all" the John Burri's out there who lost their Son's are Daughter's in either Iraq or Afghanistan.. I'm trying to imagine what the Burri family goes thru.. Eric died in 05.. For seven years every Holiday, every Fathers day, or Mothers day, every Birthday.. Guessing their only comfort was on Veterans, or Memorial day..

I have Garys flag (full military honors) and find myself touching the plaque we put on it a number of times every week..This is a brother who died close to 70, and after 40 years of service..NOT a Son who was killed in action, at such a young age..

I've decided to wait a couple of weeks to let this matter calm down, and then make an effort to contact Mr Burri..in Wyoming MI.. Doubt that i can't find a Burri. or if nothing else contact the local VFW or AL I'm sure i can reach someone how can pass on the links to our site, and this thread.. I'm sure that Mr Burri will appreciate our sentiments, and support of his actions..

I'd like input from others here.. Obviously any of you guys can do the same thing. LLE.. I know you have contacts thru "bugles". Do you agree i should wait a couple of weeks before trying to contact John, or for that matter do you feel like doing it.. I can't imagine that your thread and our comments wouldn't make him feel a bit better.. your (and everyone's) thoughts please..

that he has great, moral [and legal] support, without us telling him, WE are with him. His action was a justified and supported example of free speech. On the other hand, Gov. Christie's proclamation, in contrast, is a violation of the US Flag Code, and technically, should subject him to a federal charge. { nowhere in the code language does it cede discretion or independent judgment to a Governor to proclaim such as he did for a citizen who does/did not meet the provisions of the language of the code, regarding "Half Staff"}.
But alas, the US Flag Code is never enforced, as far as I know, and that probably is precisely why Christie did what he did [politically motivated, of course]. It is called "impunity".

That does not mean this thread wouldn't mean the world to the Man.. I'm sure he's received nothing BUT support since his "NJ flag burn party".. I think it's more than that, it's about knowing that others understand, and appreciate his loss.. More about Eric maybe..

Maybe i'm wrong, i know its right to wait as opposed to the heat of emotion.. but in a couple of weeks after it all settles down, im thinking our thoughts would be appreciated.. Nothing makes up for the loss of a child (no i don't know) but im pretty sure anything helps.. one way or the other.. It has effected how i feel about Christie.. i "was" a supporter.. Now disgusted..

politicians

Seems to me that this country is going to hell in a hand basket! It's not about where you stand on values any more. It's about not going against the grain. They have all forgoten that we are all here because our fore fathers went against the grain. That the people before them wasn't put there for who they know, but what they know and the proper way to handle it, even if it went against the grain. Maybe all politicians shoule have to take a history class before being able to take office. Then maybe our country would be strong again.

RE: politicians

my friend and i were just discussing how we need a set of federal/state laws prohibiting politicians already in office from voting against what the people he represents have decided and a severe stiff prison time if caught.additionaly,we no longer need the present electoral college to count our votes, our modern tech i.e. internet phone fax train card modern roads and bridges not to mention the short(relatively) distance between towns/cities we could count the votes to the last man/woman per state,or nationwide.we got allot of people out of work that would be glad to do whatever they could to help,i know i would, even more would help for a small fee.......

Ditto Jay

Actors and musicians today have gotten waaay too full of themselves these days. But, like you said, we let them. Not necessarily "we" as in us but us peons in general.

Used to be that actors and musicians were considered useful idiots. sigh, good times.

Whitney Houston: Town ignored order to fly flags at half-staff

As singer Whitney Houston was laid to rest last weekend, municipalities across New Jersey lowered their flags to half-staff, a salute to a native daughter who, as Gov. Chris Christie put it, made significant cultural contributions to her home state.

“For those people who say, 'I don't think she deserves it,' I say to them, ‘I understand that you don't think that. I do, and it's my executive order,’” Christie, a Republican, said last week.

At least one town, however, ignored the governor’s executive order. (A man in Michigan burned the New Jersey state flag to express his displeasure, but more on that in a bit.)

Wayne Township, population 54,000, did not lower its flags -- at the request of Mayor Christopher P. Vergano.

“As of today I have received 13 emails in favor of not lowering the flags and one opposed to my decision,” Vergano wrote Monday in an email to the Los Angeles Times. “The emails came from as far as Florida, Texas and Virginia. My personal feeling is that the flag should only be lowered as an honor for military personal and fallen police officers. Most of the people that contacted me were in the military service and thanked me for my decision.”

Houston died Feb. 11 at age 48. Her body was found in the bathtub of her guest room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills. Authorities have not yet announced a cause of death.

Among those in the township objecting to lowering the flag in Houston’s honor was the Wayne Township Policemen’s Benevolent Assn., Local 136. In a letter posted on the group’s Facebook page, association President Scott Rappaport wrote to Vergano on Feb. 16:

“Every death is a tragedy and we mean not to take that away from Ms. Houston’s family, friends and fans. However, we disagree that her death is somehow more significant or more important than the thousands of military personnel and civilians that die serving our country.”

What the association did not know was that Vergano had already made up his mind to keep the flags flying as usual.

Christie’s decision to lower the flag prompted comments, both pro and con, across the country. Also Saturday, the day funeral services were held in Newark for Houston, a man in the city of Wyoming, Mich., burned the New Jersey state flag on an outdoor grill in response to Christie’s order.

“It was a slap in the face. It cheapens the meaning of lowering that flag,” John Burri, 60, told the Detroit News. “They're watering down the meaning of a hero.”

Burri’s son, Army Spc. Eric T. Burri, was killed by an improvised explosive device while he was on patrol in Iraq in 2005. He was 21.

John Burri told the Detroit News: “I didn't do this to offend the people of New Jersey. If I did and you're offended, I'm sorry. But I did this because it was wrong and it was to show the governor [of New Jersey] how wrong this was.”
