Price of Ammo

Has anyone wiped all their fingerprints off the crystal ball to see when the price of ammo will come down. I've heard every reason in the book as to why the price is high.

glad you posted this

I was looking for some new posts on ammo especially 380 auto. What is up with that? NOBODY (not even the BIG ONLINE SELLERS) or even Walmart has any. And if you are lucky enough to find it you better be ready to pay 300-400% more than what it was a few weeks ago. Last word I heard is that the factories are 2 months (or more) behind on on orders to distributors (as of April 1st.) So who knows when it (all ammo) will get to retail??

Federal

That's good for the folks there and hopefully I don't have to handload 5.56, .62gr fmj just to punch holes in paper.

The 338 Federal cartridge cost was high when it came out(and still is). The 40 S&W cartridge cost was also high (if you could find it) when it came out. Some of these ammo costs are hi or lo because of consumer demand. Example: An unknown caliber is put on the market(speculation). The ammunition manufacturer wants to recoup that new product line development cost ASAP. I sure don't blame them for that. The government decides to become more involved (automatic price increase),etc. Where I think we might have missed the mark is in not asking or leveraging the firearm developer/manufacturer to team (financially) with the ammo folks to keep a shooters price down (that might soothe the boards crankiness)(and I believe that Ruger and (?) have actually done this). Of course some guns don't get shot a lot. Citizen buys the shiny (or not) aqua colored (or not) pistol and a box of ammo. That was 20 years ago, and they still have the same ammo "and it's cost is too high". Or is it? If they tried to shoot said piece, an entire colony of life would be destroyed or Ka-Boom . I could keep complaining or just keep biting my ankle.

ammo find

I was lucky enough to find a few boxes of new 380 FMJ for 18.95! It took a lot of looking and patience but not everyone out there is gouging prices. In case you haven't guessed, I didn't buy it online from one of the GunBroker sharks. There are other reasonably (not bargain) priced calibers out there but you really have to look now.

My ammo supplier passed away a couple of weeks ago. He was in his 80's. He sold ammo from his house. Great prices too. .223 and 7.63X39 was $4.00 for a box of 20. 9MM and .38 Special was cheap too. Now there's two large rooms full of ammo that his family can't sale. I wish I would have bought up a couple of cases of everything I shoot the last time I was there. That's me though, a day late and a dollar short.

Lucky Me.

I'm lucky, I have a brother that lives 5 minutes from a firing range. He polices up all the newer once fired brass and brings it to me. I've got thousands of rounds of brass.

Craz & Glockster

That's true Glockster and the fact that he has no family that's local here. What's left of his family are all from out of state. He never had a wife or children in all the years that I knew him. The BATF agent for this area may help the family with the paper work to sale the ammo as a lot to a sporting goods store or something like that in another county close to here. I don't think they would sale ammo by the box or case like he did. They probably don't care about the ammo anyway, they just see $$$$. There's 1 hardware store and a Wally world that sales ammo in this county I live in, besides the gentleman I was speaking about that passed away. I live back in the sticks here, AKA- the Booger Woods.

You live in a big town then. Where I's out we only have 800 people. So I know what you mean by living in the sticks.

I feel very lucky to live in the DFW Greater Metroplex Area. Most standard ammo is very cheap here. I can go to a local gunshop in Plano just north of Dallas but still part of the Metroplex and get 5.56 SSG109 for dirt cheap, around 19.50 bucks for a box of 30. The OTM M262 Model 1 is also available. It's lots more expensive, but is still relatively underpriced considering you are getting the best 5.56 match quality round currently available. the 9mm x 19mm Lugar Parabellem rounds are just about dirt cheap, but the 9mm x 22mm Israeli magnum parabellems are the one round that is outrageously overpriced. Import tariffs and federal tax as well as state sales tax really jack up the price of this round. On the other hand a box of 25 .338 Lapua magnums is quite reasonably priced, again considering what you're buying at a retail price of about 29.95. the standard NATO 7.62mm x 51mm they have on sale because of a power buy they made and a box of 100 is only 37.95! It's great to live in Texas in the big city. Ammo can be had almost of any type for much cheaper than these rounds can be found in other parts of the country.

will stay up. No two ways about it, the raw materials are more expensive, so the ammo price will stay high.

Ammo Prices

I hear the price of raw material has increased. I haven't however seen the information that would convince me. The smaller manufacturers prices have hardly waivered on calibers I use. That doesn't make business sense to me.
So, WhazzUp. I'll keep using DT and the Buffalo, das est schoen.

If you look at the standard metals used in most cartridges and bullets, on the market today, you will find the market prices of: steel, mild steel, match grade steel, ferrovanadium steel, copper, brass, lead and cupronickel are all way up on the metals index. These are not ordinary price increases, but huge ones on the order of anywhere from 100 to 500 percent higher than normal prices. This simply has to affect the price of rounds and parts for self loaded rounds.

is simple supply and demand. "We the people" have been buying up all the ammo available and plenty more people are waiting for the supplies to replenish so they can buy more. Prices will remain high until everyone feels they have all they need.

I bought cases of every caliber I own about 7 years ago...prices were low then. I haven't bought a box of ammo since then and haven't done much shooting, so I haven't been a factor in the current situation.

I saw Cheaper then DIrt selling American Eagle 9mm (the "cheap stuff") for $30 a box of 50 rnds. That's BULLshit! 60 cents a rnd! And the greedy bastards on Gunbroker...well, they're getting every dollar they can.

you just have to go when they get their truck in. They don't even bother putting it on the shelves in the display case. They just pass it out from the boxes on the floor, and on the mornings they get it, it's usually gone before lunch time. They haven't raised prices on it, either.

cheap(er) ammo?

Uglym -
That's the way I've decided to go - especially after seeing the prices on GB and some online dealers "shooting" up. I bought PMC 223 from Natchez at $325/case pre-XMAS - now they want $600/case 5 months later!
I was able to get 3000 rds of 380 FMJ and JHP from a buddy who reloads. I supplied the brass but even he is having probs getting components now. Glad I put my "order" in when I did! Got my 9s, 38s, 357s and 45s did too - so I'm pretty much set - I won't be one of the hoarding crazies charging the local Wallyworld at dawn. Think I'll wait and see if I can find a really true BARGAIN deal out there (not likely for the next 6-8 months!).
This ammo thing definately puts the kabosh on that Saiga IZ-138 .308 I've been eyeing...for now...:-((( May have to switch my sights to that Springfield XDM since 40 cal is still kinda easy to find (unpopular round??)
Hmmm...no (obvious) government restrictions, but no ammo either... if it smells like gun control....

...shoot 'em if ya got 'em!
