I went to shoot my new Glock 19 for the second time yesterday at a falling plates match. It shot great, but the slide failed to lock back when I fired the last round in the magazine. I've never had this happen with the 17, so it had me concerned. What could cause it to do that? It only happened once, so I'am not sure if it was one of those freak things or if could turn into a problem. Any suggestions?

slide failure

depending on how many rounds you have run thru it, it could have short stroked,or just bad round w/o enuff powder, also give your corner of your mag follower for where it lifts the slide release a look, it could have gotten worn, get a new follower and put it in also the slide release itself, cant be VERY MUCH

How do you grip the gun? I use the stacked thumb grip, where the support hand thumb is pressed along the frame and the firing hand thumb is on top of the support thumb's knuckle. Every once in a while, my firing thumb will accidentally ride the slide stop lever and keep it from being raised into place by the empty mag. It never happens with my G26 or my G34, only with the G19. But then I just took Mr Crafstman rotary tool to the slide stop lever and customized it for my shooting style. Who needs a licensed gunsmith when you have a Dremel tool knockoff?

By the way, Lonewolf

You're right about the cost of parts for Glocks. They're not very much. Parts that almost never break or wear out, and when they do, they're not very expensive and can be installed by just about anyone with a drift pin. I guess that's why a gunsmith doesn't like them, huh? Not nearly as good a source of income as the beloved, yet flawed and finicky 1911. Hah hah hah. I'm a clever one, huh?

might be on to something, since since that is how I grip the gun. I'll pay more attention to it this weekend! Thanks!

It's not as good a CCW gun as a Glock in a similar frame, and the grip safety serves no real purpose, but it is awfully comfortable to shoot. I have thought about sending my G19 in to Robar to have the grip reduction treatment, but there are an awful lot of other things that have higher priority. DAMN POWERBALL, NOT EVEN ONE NUMBER!!!!

I never said I DIDNT like glocks, and my xd will shoot JUST AS WELL, IF NOT BETTER and and it is WAY MORE COMFORTABLE TO SHOOT, I HATE THAT FREAKIN HUMP.
when I go walkin around my ranch, I usually have my 29 in my hip pocket only because we have hogs here and my xd dosent come in 10mm.

When using an IWB holster, the real concealability in a gun comes from its height and my wife's XD subcompact with its flush ten round mag is the same height as my G19 with its 15 rd mag and fuller grip. My G26 with its 10 rd mag is much shorter than the XD subcompact. So I get a better grip and five more rounds in a package more reliable and just as accurate as the XD for a similar grip length.

apoligy to run...

I made a dumbass mistake and stand corrected...
said my xd carries 12+1 and that part is true, but what I didnt snap to was that I had my hi-cap mag in as it was sitting right next to me and just looked at the bottom of the mag..
so there for...I AM IN ERROR and damn well man enuff to admit it, short mag is 10 rounds, but FBI STATS say most gunfights are 4.5 rounds.
so, if you CAN hit your target, shouldnt need 15
personally I dont want to be anywhere there are 15 rounds going off in a crowded room , mall etc.
as sgt. rock used to say....

say 4.5 rounds? Then carry a revolver, right? The way I figure, statistically speaking, I'll never be involved in a gunfight stateside, so I shouldn't even need to carry a gun. But I do in case it happens. So, if I've already beaten the odds and get into a gunfight, I want to be prepared to beat the "rule of 3" (Three feet, three rounds, three seconds) as well.

If my wife didn't have such an aversion to them, I would have a nice .357 snubbie in my car, though. A wonderful thing about wheelguns is you can't limp wrist 'em, so they're great for circumstances in which you may not be able to get an ideal grip on the gun, such as shooting through the seat behind you, and they won't jam up from fluid splashback in a contact shot like in the passenger seat next to you. I would love a S&W 29-8 4" bbl .44 mag and another Taurus 606 2 1/8" bbl factory ported .357 mag. But I'll probably never get another revolver. Oh well.

The vast majority of my techniques and views have been based on training I have received while in the army. I have been very fortunate in that my first platoon sergeant was former Delta and I have been trained by some of the best and brightest in the army. None of that training involved the use of handguns, but I spent a year of the Ft Riley SRT (Special reaction Team) and learned that all the previous training with rifles can be transferred to handguns. Many of my techniques and tactics were tested during two of my three tours to Iraq. The big difference in the training I have received and the stuff civilians get is the use. Most of my training and experience have been offensive in nature (i.e. going through a door with an asshole landlord's "rent's due, motherfucker" attitude and M4 eviction notice.), versus the defensive nature of self-defense classes. This defensive mindset (LLE disagrees that mindset exists) is wrong in my opinion. I think once you have gone Condition Red or have reached the Decide part of the OODA loop or whatever school of thought you belong to, once the target has been identified, you should go to an offensive mode until the threat is gone.

Wow! That got way off topic. Basically check your magazine for abnormal wear on the top corners, check your slide stop release lever. Those are the two main parts that if worn down/cracked would possibly lead to your malfunction. Also bad ammo which was mentioned before. I would recommend you clean the hell out of your new Glock by soaking it in Joy or dawn grease cutting liquid dish soap, to remove any oil contaminants and scrub the heck out of your barrel with your barrel brush with dish soap coated all over the brush and you will be amazed at how fast and clean your barrel gets. I also use Q-Tips for the other hard to reach areas with dish soap as well. Rinse under hot water and use low pressure air to blast out the water, or use a blow dryer and you will have all oil cleaned off. Spot clean with Break Free CLP or similar cleaner and I recommend a couple drops of oil Realistically 3-5 to coat all of your metal parts and wipe clean whatever is left is all you will need for a Glock as they love to be fired mostly dry, but since it is a combat gun they will function ridiculously lubed as well, but it just makes for more carbon cleaning later. Another fun tip would be to take a dremel tool with the polisher attachment on low speed and polish your feed ramp. I did it and have had very smooth feeding regardless of ammo. Happy shooting!

If you are not just a little bit crazy, then you are not quite sane...
