Which is more stable? I heard Semtex is also reffered to as "Terrorist C4". What is the advantages of Semtex over C4 and Vise Verse? Whats the effective Blast Radius.

Just curious here as I am no explosive expert. And I am sure some of you military people have handled one if not both.

ehhhh...

Don't know if one is really better then the other. C-4 is slightly more powerful, and I do not believe it is avalible outside the military/LE chains. I have used Semtex that was aquired in Iraq, and worked just fine. I'm not an expert, but used in breaching charges, and couldn't tell any difference from C-4.

Good to hear a first hand account of it. Thanks. All I know about Semtex is that id has RDX in it same as C4. I am not a chemical scientist but Semtex is just another C4 in my book. I dont see any difference other than the name being changed.

Semtex

Military grade semtex is also more powerfull then civilian. C-4 also has a faster expansion rate the semtex, but nothing you or I would notice. Hi-explosive is hi-explosive.

Very true!!

I used to carry a small portion of c-4 just for that. Break a piece off about 1/2 the size of the first joint of your thumb, and cook away. Always heard the Urban myth about the guy tried to stomp it out and blew his foot off. Don't know if it would really explode, but never got the huevos to try it.

HA!

Though I don't know if you could get enough force to set it off? It sure as hell wouldn't be me trying it out either. Damn, put a whole new perspective to the Dog doo in a paper bag lit on fire in front of the house front door!

lol...

When I was in the service I was at the chow hall and this G-9 by the name of Tracy asked if I could give him a hand with something in the basement. So I head down with him carrying one of his tool bags and he walks up to this natural gas line. I ask him whats up and he tells me he is looking for a possible leak. While he is telling me this he reaches in his pocket and get sout a lighter and lites it then runs it over this gas line. he comes walking back up the stairs asking me where I went and why did I run. Before he even finished say L in Leak I was hitting the top stair.

Thats when he explained to me about pop off valves and how it would only blow out and not back. Still a dangerous way to check for leaks you ask me, thats what dye is for,, lol

Yeah, I do not think I would use my foot as a test. But if I rigged up a sledge on a trip wire and stood a safe distance back...

I thought C4

only detonates by electrical shock not forceful shocl like stomping. But like I said i dont know much on explosives so I will take ya all's word for it. Either way I also heard that you can cook on C4. Heard they did that in Nam or somewhere. Also I wonder if its the E.O.D's job to explode ordnance that the U.S. capture in Iraq and other places?

hi-ex

1. The only thing I noticed was that Semtex had a bit more of a 'stanky' smell to it, both before and after it blew. (1st job out of college was teaching and working at an explosives company).

2. I can tell you from personal experience that advertised-stable explosives, even binaries, can detonate high-order from heat and pressure alone. Some of our demos did not go as planned due to these 2 factors; no elec/nonel/fuse used.

I recommend that anyone interested in the legal use of explosives take a 1 or 2 day class (several places offer them) to see/use first hand. Folks still use them for quarrying, ditching, beaver dams, etc. on a daily basis.

So, if I wanted to blast stumps with dynamite, that is still possible? I thought the ATF put the kibosh on all that.

AFAIK

As far as I know, individuals can still get permits to use certain kinds of explosives for certain purposes. Many states are different, and have add'l laws over and above what BATFE would require.

I doubt anyone needs or could get Semtex or C4 just to bust a dam or stump; lots of the regulations specifically cover plastic explosives vs. binaries or blasting agents (the latter being easier to get, more common, and well able to do any job I can think of).

Homeland Security also has their fingers in that pie; check and doublecheck before you do anything bigger than fireworks.

I had a SWAT guy play an unfunny prank on me.....I was crimping caps for an upcoming class and he tossed a flashbang into the building I was working in. Very unpleasant, and until I figured out what had happened I was pretty worried. The worst part was staggering out of the magazine area half-blind, hearing nothing but 'dial-tone' and falling down the steps at the exit. Not the first or last time I was blown up. Foolish youth (my 18-30 period was a bit weird).
