Welcome to everybody. Since samD has appoint Ryo as Range Master at Gunslot and Ryo have discuss putting up a topic about all things concerning the craft of the Range Master and for Range Safety Officers as well with greasypaws, here it is at last. Everyone is welcome to come and ask questions and make comments. Ryo would like to appoint Greasypaws as Co Range Master as he is senior to me and when Ryo was first appoint to this position by our President samD, Ryo was very reluctant to accept post because greasypaws is so much more experience than Ryo. But samD told Ryo that am a general of the site and as such must serve when call to duty. So Ryo accept post because cannot deny duty to superior officer's request. It is my hope that samD will approve Ryo request to appoint Greasypaws as Co Range Master so that he can make sure Ryo get facts right and not make too many mistake. We are all behind you in this appointment
manu2014
You will make us all proud.
LittleDragon
Thank you very much. This happen a couple weeks ago. It is only until now that have found time to set up the Range Master's Corner. Ryo is very very humble by appointment and not feel worthy, but since am call to duty then must answer call and fulfill position as best can. Ryo does not claim to be expert and in life am only Junior Range Master and study under the Senior Chief Range Master at the gun club and shooting range our family belong to. Am looking forward to informative and lively discussion here about all things concerning the craft and work of the Range Master and also the very vitally important work of the special assistants to the Range Master and that is the work of the Range Saftey Officers, whose jobe it is to insure the safety of all who come to shoot at any shooting range. Safety first is always the first concern of any good Range Master.
Here we can discuss such things as how to set up and run a shooting tournament, what are good safety proceedures, and how to implement them. Also one of the most difficult things a Range Master is often called to do is to resolve disputes concerning hits on targets. And there are many many other aspects to the job of a Range Master. Ryo really enjoy learning these things and believe have become a better person and have learned a good deal of self discipline in job at shooting range and gun club.
Your friend,
LittleDragon
greasypaws
as one myself it is tough dealing with life members or older members that have been around for many years.they still think the rules are the same from years ago and have a hard time being told they have to abide by ALL the rules not just the rules put in place when they joined the club.new members are of course new and that is also a pain in that they want to always act dumb and say "i didnt know".at my range all the rules are posted in multiple places so ignorance is no excuse.Advice:read any and all rules before you shoot that way you understand what is required of you as a shooter/member!
greasypaws
no,i think i will stick with contributing range officer but thanks LD!
LittleDragon
Ryo will from time to time need to ask you questions as have only serve as Junior Range Master and there are so many thing for self to learn still. Your wisdom and knowledge will alway be appreciated. Ryo not need to repeat, but will anyway, how grateful i am for all the help and wisdom you have imparted to me since first joining Gunslot. Ryo is proud to be your friend and your student.
One of the first thing I have planned for the Range Master's Corner is how to set up and conduct a Tournament Competition and your help in this matter will be of great value not only to Ryo, but think the whole site will benefit from this.
As alway your friend,
LittleDragon
PS Our club also have rules posted everywhere and the Range Safety Officers are charged with the responsibility to see that these rules are followed to the letter, but as you say, it is the responsibility of each member/shooter to be aware of the Range Rules and to follow them.
Reaper308
are both of the ranges where you guys work outside? If so, do you allow tracers?
LittleDragon
We have outdoor range and also an indoor range for pistols. No, tracers are not allow at our range because of possible fire hazard. This rule must be strictly inforced because you never know when the Fire Marshall might show up just to check on these thing.
Your friend alway,
LittleDragon
greasypaws
the 550,175,100 and 50 yard ranges are all outside but the firing line is in covered open front buildings.as for tracers, the rules say no but i AM the range officer!
ivantank
i was thinking about making my own range...how about same ideas about some fixed targets...barrels, hay bails..what good stuff to put up??..right now we got a .410, 16 gage shotgun, a .44mag, and pretty soon my glock17 will come in..any ideas??
TacDoc
Since we're crunching on this topic how hard is it to secure area for a shooting range?
fordvg
If you can get ahold of them big round hay bales and put dirt over top of them that will work great for a backstop.

I have helped set up and conduct tournament competition for club and state and Area 5 level matches, plus worked as a RO at the 01 Police and Fire Games in Indy. I helped and worked the Indiana State USPSA matches from 1995 to 2000. In 1998 or 99 I can't remember the year, I designed a stage of fire for the Indiana State USPSA match. From 1996 to 2000 I was a RO are the USPSA State matches.
I set up and ran club level 3 gun matchs for 3 years also. Was the Chief Range Master for our IPSC/USPSA club for 3 years too. Our gun range was a outdoor range with 10 pistol bays and the rifle range was set up from 25 yards out to 230 yards. Helped with the steel pistol matches we had and set up 22 long rifle matches and side matches.
The 1997 Area 5 match we had 750 shooters in a 3 day match with 2 side matches. The 01 Police and Fire Games we had 900 shooters from 70 diff countries in a 3 day match. The 01 Police and Fire Games Steph and I worked this match on our honeymoon, now that is a cool wife. Stephanie was my scorekeeper and helped with some of the guys that did not speak english. This was a lot of fun and a lot of hard work just like the Area 5 match that I worked at. Was tuff when the guys and gals did not speak english. The 97 Area 5 match is where I got to meet a lot of the pro shooters. Just a little of what I have done over the years at competitions.

I have a daycare center 1,001 yards away from my house and use it as a backstop.
ebear
its so cute , when you hear those lil voices scream...." that crazy son of a crossdresser shot me!!!!!"
runawaygun762
You can't hear them scream from that far away.
ebear
back about 10 years ago, The Holy Father ordered all Catholic males born to be inserted with a special high pitched sonar device. This was done so that all of his priests would be able to tell who the screamers were. This would then lower the number of "DOCUMENTED"cHILD RAPES BEING DONE BY PRIESTS.Now LLE may dispute this as fiction, and it very well may be......but Runawaygun is a lying bastard and should be shunned like Hannibal Lector was .
runawaygun762
There must not be any catholic kids at the daycare center. As for being a lying bastard, so what? At least I'm not Mexican. That would make me a stinky lying bastard.
ebear
good point......but fuck you anyways!!!!oh yeah,,,and thanks for serving our country.....Barak told me to say that
runawaygun762
that I'm pissed at him. He said when he bacame Pres, they'd start using lube for the BGMW. That would be Big Green Military Weenie for you civilians. And airmen. Same fucking thing.
ebear
did you see the 3 pointer he sank against Orlando???? what CAN'T he do????
LittleDragon
love the jokes. ryo have sense of humor you know. but this is thread for question and comment about shooting range and work of Range Master and Range Safety Officer.
Your friend respectfully,
LittleDragon
LLE
when your thread has been hijacked. That is one of the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution.
LittleDragon
This thread is not hijacked. Hug e bear chan is very dear friend. runawaygun762 and ryo started out in bad way but became friend too. They not hijack thread. They just having little fun and if notice when ryo ask them to respect thread, they stop. Caught you in big misunderstanding. Ryo not mind kidding around, but this is important thread that has and will have more good, useful information for members of site.
To LLE, for once little ryo agree with you and so have edited this post. Ryo wish to offer most very humble apology, gomen nasai! Honto gomen nasai! Ryo lost temper last night and forgot to follow own rule. Domo arigato goziemasu for pointing out that ryo forgot own rule.
In future, will not reply to anything you say unless it both reasonable and put in respectful manner. Why you not believe in the US Constitution? The burden of proof is on the accuser and not on the accused. Do you deny this ka
So ryo not have to prove anything to you.
LittleDragon
LLE
No apology is required. If you consider questioning and criticism of your inaccuracies, questioning or criticism of your misstatements of fact, and questioning or criticism of the logic of your "back story", as accusations, you obviously have a very fragile ego. YOU have the burden of proof: Once more, I challenge you to respond to questions I have directed to you in several previous posts. If you do not respond, then you will confirm for all of our readers that you are a charlatan.
LLE
"If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen";
Another one, applicable to your behavior: "If the shoe fits, wear it". There is no vendetta, here. There is only--as you put it, having "fun". I seem to remember a posting by you, or one of your "family"-- something to the effect that if you have no argument, attack the person: that is called "ad hominem" in most mature societies, and such an argument is considered in-valid. You mistake valid rejoinders and questioning of your postings, as an attack on your person. This demonstrates, whether you are 16 or 46, that you just don't "get it".
If you are really who you claim to be, and are sought after by military planners as a consultant, I challenge you to answer all of my observations that question the validity of your claims, and opinions.
If not, please, GO AWAY................
samD
You will have to learn, that there is no reverance in here! A thread is usually sidetracked within minutes, don't take personal, we just have some real wackos as myself, that something is funny so we write it. This is no more or less than what would go on in the barracks or anywhere men meet.
So just try to enjoy the commaraderie/fellowship.
LittleDragon
ryo have sense of humor. and understand runawaygun762 wacky sense of humor and hug e bear who have different kind of humor and also yourself who have wide and vary sense of humor which is sometime wacky and sometime very sophisticated. ryo appreciate what you say. we can still have our important discussion and allow leeway for people who have funny thing to say. ryo will keep this to heart more in future. thank you again for your wisdom in this matter. what not understand is vendetta that is level against self and family with many conjectural accusation and demand for proof, when our country alway believe burdern of proof is upon accuser and not the accused. and of course there is no call to say that this thread have been hijack neh. (in case you forgot word neh mean, are you with me so far)
your friend alway,
LittleDragon
samD
NEH, as I said don't take anything personal and if you have proof, just post it, that generally shuts up naysayers...
LittleDragon
correct answer to neh, if you do follow is also neh, just spoke in slight different tone and it mean hai, am with you so far! ryo understand. there are some thing ryo not intend to answer because of spirit in which thing were ask. ryo not intend to argue with fence post neh. not naming anyone in particular. this is just good general wisdom to follow neh.
your friend alway,
LittleDragon
samD
If it was me and I had the proof, I would post in ALL CAPS! but that is my vindictive self. hai
clintlebo
sorry LittleDragon, gonna go off topic...
so our president has only one letter in his name that is legit, that he can prove?
coincidentally, it is the same grade given by me and others to the POTUS for the job he is doing governing...
clint
samD
You drinking those crazy bastard nazis again? Don't get your post. I haven't had a drink yet...lol
clintlebo
you mentioned to our young friend that you put your facts in all caps. I see that your name, samD has only one cap, so I tried to forge a connection between your name and your declaration of facts in all caps.
I need to get back to work...anyone hiring in the construction management business?
clint
p.s. I realize it was a feeble attempt at humor, again, sorry for the hijack LittleDragon.
LittleDragon
ryo not hold grudge. ryo only bewildered. but this often common thing for ryo. ryo will be better man for not fighting than for engaging in pointless fight. ryo have already prove self here, at least believe so. have make good contribution to site that seem like everybody find satisfactory. at least that what most people have comment, including samD. ryo is in quandary. somethings ryo cannot say. other things want to say but not think best to do so. this is ryo choice. it not that ryo defy your wisdom. it just that ryo think best to follow own heart.
samD know how ryo and family feel about you and know how you feel about ryo and family.
hope you understand neh.
your friend alway,
LittleDragon
samD
other than to keep you lesser mortals guessing. LOL
runawaygun762
I thought of my sense of humor as more of a "ruggedly handsome" sense of humor. Wacky? Screetch from Saved by the Bell was wacky. I don't want to be Screech. I want to be Zack or Mel Gibson.
LittleDragon
btw you are a Range Master too aren't you ka
Your friend,
LittleDragon
runawaygun762
I have no desire to watch others shoot when I can be doing it myself. I've been through the RSO course in the army, but it's a joke and I got 100% on the written test without listening to the class. When I go shoot, everybody is their own RSO.

I have a question. What Requirements are needed to be a range master?
LittleDragon
on this question, it depend from one range to nother what requirements are, but there are some basics. first good eyesight is important either natural or with corrective lenses. you have to be alway watchful and alway aware of what going on under your command. when you are up in the tower in the Center Seat, you are in Command. this require leadership skill sets. it require knowledge of firearms and safety proceedures appropriate to all guns in all situations as well as any special safety proceedures that are require at the gun range at which you work. for example, one precaution we have at our range is that you may not carry a loaded weapon, even if locked in a case from one place to another on the range. the weapons must be unloaded and locked properly with a properly attached trigger lock and if in a case the case must also be locked. for example like ryo was doing just the other day, was shooting the DPMS Panther Mini SASS at the 400 meter gallery and it got time to meet little brother and gary kun at the 600 meter gallery to shoot our .308s before moving onto the 800 meter gallery. ryo had to unload and lock the Mini SASS and lock it securely into the case with its accessories and ammo, BEFORE could even leave the firing line. Then check with the line Rangs Safety Officer to show ryo's ok to shoot card. and to sign out from the firing line at the 400 meter gallery and show the properly locked case. Ryo had already talked to the Line Safety Officer and he watch as ryo unloaded the Mini SASS and properly place and lock the trigger lock and then place everything properly back in the case. Had to lug the case up to the parking lot and lock it in the car and then fetch the new DPMS Panther LR SASS chamber in 7.62mm x 51mm NATO standard .308 from the car and lug it all the way up the hill past the club house and down the mezzanine to the 600 meter gallery. it very good exercise, but when pops or grandpa is with us we get a cart. they have like electric golf carts at our range because it is spread out over such large area. 20,000 acres in fact.
That just one example of things that the Range Master have to keep track of from his Center Seat up in the tower. we have communications systems like long range walkie talkies and cell phones too, so can communicate from the Tower Command Center to the main office, to all the firing lines and the target lines and the indoor pistol range and of course be ready to communicate with any of the assistant range masters and the Senior Chief Range Safety Officer, (a job ryo honto want to have one day) and of course all of the assistant Range Safety Officers and the Youth Program Young Range Masters and Young Range Safety Officers. Ryo will be youngest Full Range Safety Officer in the history of our club when graduate from final class and take final field exam in september which is coming up very soon and ryo is very excite about this too neh.
You need to know every inch of your range. When you command from the center seat you are responsible for everything that happen on the range. You have make decissions a lot of the time about target hits or misses, and about the safety of a automated target system at one or nother of the galleries. you have to be very good at filling out forms and reports. and of course you need a common sense and an extensive sense of fair play. this is especial true when conducting both official and unofficial tournaments. you have to know all the rules for tournaments by heart too. you can't take time to refer to a book if you have a thousand shooters on the lines at 16, soon to be 20 when the 4 new galleries are opened next month in September. we have over 5000 memberse of our gun club and our club is non exclussive. anyone who wish to come and use our facilities is welcome. you pay your fee and if you bring own gun and ammo you just pay the fee and get your Ok to Shoot Card and then trek off to the gallery at which you wish to shoot. The Range Master must have complete understanding of all the security measures and personnel as well as all the security equipment. we have active motion detectors and video cams that cover every square inch of our facility. these are very important as upon occasion it happens that a toddler wander off into a shooting gallery and the Range Master must signal an alert and the Line Safety officer bark out orders to cease firing instantly. Such orders must be obeyed by the shooters or the toddler could be in deadly peril. Range Masters have to be leaders. People have to respect their judgment as well as understand that the rules are for everybody to be safe and to have fun and it is very much not fun to get into an argument with anyone while on this job. it can distract you from your vitally important work. not all gun ranges are anywhere near as large as ours, but there are many ranges in texas that are in fact much larger than our range. You should have some knowledge of the workings of guns. how to field strip them and put them back together. how to clean them. how to make minor field repairs. you need some knowledge of computers at a range like ours because almost everything there is controlled by computers, so understanding them is important too. YOu need general knowledge of as many different types of weapons as possible. this is one reason why ryo come here to Gunslot because ryo is studying to be both full time Range Master and full time Range Safety Officer. friendliness and the ability to get along with other people and to be diplomatic is a big plus to be a good Range Master. remember, when you are in the Center Seat, you are the final arbiter and your word is law. there is no appeal beyond the word of the Range Master on Duty in the Center Seat. you cannot make arbitrary decisions either. and alway remember to give as few orders as possible. because everytime you choose to give an order on a particular subject, you are from then on beholden to alway give orders on that particular subject. Sometimes you may have to deal with fights, with drunks, with people on drugs. we have very strict rules about this. Security is called. they attend to the situation at had and in many cases the local police must be called, unless like we do at our range you have a lot of off duty and even on duty policemen coming to shoot at the range. ryo have found this very useful at times. now it may sound like this is lot of things to learn and to know by heart, but remember, it fun as anything you can do with your clothes on neh d:-) even though once a month in the summertime our range have a "Gay Day" where gays are invited to come and practice their shooting and they often wear speedos and not much if anything else and this allowed because on those days the range rake in huge amounts of extra cash. and it times like this when you have to keep sense of humor and lot of patience and tollerance. their will probably be people here who will missunderstand or maybe even not like it that we go to such a range and ryo have part time job and classes there, but it is all about money. on those days the range rake in from 8 to 10 time the normal about of cash take that one would normally expect to make on a fine saturday. and like say, all are welcome. policy at range is not matter what faith or lack of faith or color of skin or level of education or sexual orientation, basic rule is everybody's money is green. and it about the bottom line. our range is there as a for profit business and anything that meke extra money for the club and company that own the range is a good thing. and a big reason why "Gay Days" are so profitable is so very few of these people own guns so the gun rental desk is working with triple staff for that day and raking in the cash like it falling from the sky and whatever you feel about such people, their money is green too. and it spend like anybody else's money. but these are like 6 days out of the whole year this happen neh. we have church groups that come and 4H clubs that come and Rotary Clubs and there are even AA groups who have outings to the gun range to come and shoot. But they must sign papers that demonstrate that everyone is sober and no one who is obviously drunk or on drugs is allowed anywhere near the firing lines. you have to be a good diplomat and often be very sweet and very nice to people you would just as soon not be sweet or nice to, including people you might even want to punch dead in the nose neh. it about being safe. it about having fun. it about organization. it about communication. and bottome line, it about earning an honest wage for the company, the clube and all the workers including ryo at the range. these are basic skills that you need to have and to understand before you can be a real RAnge Master or Range Safety Officer.
Hope this helps and if you would like to chat more on messenger live about this, then ryo would be very happy to help.
Btw, ryo will be sitting in the Center Seat come this Saturday morning in command at the tower for the final round of the current Youth Tournament. it shaping up to be nother exciting finish between that beautiful nihongi girl with the lovely black hair, that guy tyler that we not like very much and of course little brother and gary kun, who btw is currently in the lead overall on points by 15 points over ryu kun.
Your friend,
LittleDragon
