In order to steer clear of any bottom feeding scumbag lawyer's money making schemes ALL cut 'n pastes MUST be kept to a bare introduction to the subject & MUST link to the originating page.

If you want to impart more information, then DO IT IN YOUR OWN WORDS.

Sorry guys but for the foreseeable future ANY posts breaking these guidelines will be deleted without warning.

here's the problem. How much of someone else's work can I use without getting permission?

http://www.copyright.gov/help/faq/faq-fairuse.html#howmuch

Under the fair use doctrine of the U.S. copyright statute, it is permissible to use limited portions of a work including quotes, for purposes such as commentary, criticism, news reporting, and scholarly reports. There are no legal rules permitting the use of a specific number of words, a certain number of musical notes, or percentage of a work. Whether a particular use qualifies as fair use depends on all the circumstances. See FL 102, Fair Use, and Circular 21, Reproductions of Copyrighted Works by Educators and Librarians.

So how can he sue?

Dockit, what about pictures. I pull pictures off the net sometimes and post em here. I usually don't copy and past articles though. But, whats the pitfalls of pulling, oh, say a pic of a half naked woman with a gun I found on the net and pasting it here??

If you had bothered to read the link greasy you would have understood my post. The lawyer in the link has started buying right to news articles and will sue if you repost them, that is all I was posting. As far as being a mod here no thanks to many ignorant children to deal with. How SamD and Reaper do is beyond me.

Here is the basic for anyone to understand....

When you are in college plagerism is a pretty big deal... They kick you out of school in some cases for doing it...

Plagerism is the intentional use of another person's work without permission and without giving credit. The key here is that you must give credit...

Example: "A fondness for power is implanted, in most men, and it is natural to abuse it, when acquired." (Alexander Hamilton, The Farmer Refuted, February 23, 1775)

This would be one way to give credit, except in today's internet age you should also note your actual source such as : http://www.marksquotes.com/Founding-Fathers/Hamilton/ Accessed 9 August 2010 at 21:53 Hours.

If you are a copy paste guy/gal... Just make sure to use parenthesis and note who did the actual work.

That is main thing to remember here...

Lawsuits....

Lawsuits are not usually filed against individuals unless there is somethign to go after... I am going to go out on a limb here and say that most people on this site are not Donald Trump, Bill Gates, Michael Dell, or any other billionare mogul... The chances of you being sued are pretty slim...

Anyone claiming they intend to sue you is most likely a fool....

Just my humble honest opinion...

and what dockit says is true. A couple of other sites I frequent have already implemented a policy of "snippet and link." A lot of people here will post an entire article with no attribution. You can get away with this in certain cases, such as Wikipedia, which has a "Creative Commons" license that basically says you can use the entire article of you attribute it properly. I subscribe to Stratfor, a kind of private CIA, and they will sometimes give permission to re-post an entire article.

Technically, it's almost trivial to find violations. Our posts here on gunslot are immediately indexed on google. All you have to do is copy and paste a single sentence and voila! There's where the article came from. So if someone wants to catch you, they can.

Most of the pictures on gunslot are very likely covered by copyright, though they are a lot harder to trace. It probably comes down to this: How likely is it that someone will cry foul? Usually people who own copyrighted material issue a "cease and desist take down" letter. The owner of the site complies, and the matter is ended. This happens every day on YouTube.

So I think to over-react to this is probably not necessary. These bottom feeders are going after the big bucks because that's where the money is. But MarvQuinn's Terms & Conditions do say you won't post something that's not yours to post. I think that a prudent way to handle this would be to attribute if you copy. In the case of a Mainstream Media report, it's probably best to do a snippet & link approach. That really should handle it.

Snippet and link is

easier on bandwidth usage as well, likely not a problem on a large server like this site has.....And believe it or not, posting pictures mid thread instead of uploading to the site is easier on bandwidth as the images are hosted elsewhere.....
