Hello all I am new to Gunslot and have a few questions fro anyone whom may be able to answer. Six weeks ago I purchased a new Remington model 700 CDL SF 270 wsm. To be perfectly honest and please no flaming, but this is the first remington I have ever purchased. I had never purchased Remington or a few other brands of rifles because I felt they were inferior to Browning and Ruger. When I picked up this Remington I really liked the way it handled and the way it looked so I figured I would give it a try. I put a 3-9x33 ultralight Leupold on the rifle.
I purchased 4 boxes of 130 gr Winchester Balistic Tip shells and went to the range. All my new rifles are put through a 50 round breakin period before I pass any judgement. I do this by firing 5 rounds and clean the barrel after each round. After doing this for five rounds I fire 50 rounds cleaning the barrel after every 5 rounds.
After I fired the very first round I noticed the bolt open hareder after firing the round. It was not terrible but very noticeable. I continued with the breakin period and could not help notice I was lucky to be keeping a five inch group at 100 yds.
At this point I pulled out my Browning bar II safari in 270 and shot a 3 shot group of less then 1" MOA. I thought to myself that it might be the recoil of the remington so I put another box of shells through the rifle paying real close attention to my form and still no improvement.
Sorry for the long story but wanted to give a little background before asking my questions.
1)Is it possible the head spacing is bad on this rifle? I ask this because of the bolt opening harder after firing shell.
2)Is it the round I am using? Everything I have read says this is an awesome factory load for whitetail and this caliber.
3)Is it the recoil?
4)Were my previuos thoughts on Remington true and not all in my head?
5)Are the wsm calibers just a gimmick as some of my friends are trying to convince me?
6)Should I dump this rifle or can it be made to be a shooter?
Don't get me wrong guys I know this is a hunting rifle not a tack driver (Stainless Steel Fluted Barrel) But in all honesty an auto loader should never out perform a bolt action in my opinion.I can not live with this rifle the way it shoots at this present time.
I would apreciate any advice from anyone whom may have knowledge on this subject. Thank you for reading my post.
