Rifle question

Just curious, I am thinking about buying a rifle and want to get into some longer range shooting, i.e. 300 - 400 yards, anyone got any suggestions of a good rifle for that? Thanks!

Long range rifle

I shot for years with a Remington 700 in 308 in sniper matches out to 900 yards with mine. I would go with a 308 to shoot 300 to 400 yards.

Still like a bolt action over a semi-auto and the 700 will be about $800 cheaper. Plus, he can use that money to buy a Leopold Vari-3 8.5x25x50mm scope to put on the rifle. Gunsatcost.com have the Leopold Vari-3 8.5x25x50mm for $730. The cheaps I have found this scope for.

Excellent, any tips on how to get started. I've never shot anything beyond 100 yards.

Dry firing helps a lot

Get some snap caps to dry fire and practices with a small target as much as possible. When you desided on a caliber and weight of bullet, find out the drop for that round. Make a little cheat sheet to look at and tape it to your scope cover on your scope. Find a range that you can shoot 100,200,300, and 400 yards to see if your drop chart is the same. The lenght of your barrel will make a big difference, if the barrel is longer or shorter. If you use a 308 most drop charts are setup for a 26 inch barrel.
