I had the misfortune of having to dig my dog's grave today! She ain't dead yet but she can no longer get around and I can't lift her (she's big). I can't 'dispatch' her myself as discharging firearms in the city limits is a no-no.....talk about fucked, I guess I will have to wait for the vet, I am not sure that she can......

I feel for you

I had a dachshund (sp) named Sniper that was suffering. I took him to the garden in AZ and was going to do it, but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger. The wife ended up taking him to the vet to be put down while I was at work. It really sucks and I'm sorry to read this stuff. They're like our kids and our best friends.

My German Shepard, Seven, is my best friend to. A while back I thought I was gonna lose him and it almost killed me. I understand how you feel, and my thoughts are with you.

Daisy.. thanks for bringing this post up.. I was heading to bed, and not going to read any posts till tomorrow..

Hamp.. do you have an emergency vet that could get you in.. I don't imagine you'll get much sleep one way or the other..

As to "dispatching" yourself.. I did that last year with my dear 14 year old Sandy.. By the good Lords grace I got lucky with the shot placement, and she droped like a rock.. but not a day goes by that i don't wish i had taken her to a vet..

This bothered me so much i got rid of the handgun

I'm really sorry Hamp, Daisys right.. just a sad ache in your chest..

Be happy in the knowlege that WE do not own our pets---THEY own us, and they tell us when it is time to do the right thing. I, too, trust my life to my 13 year old German Shepherd, and I will honor and obey what she tells me, for she has proven, time and again, what true wisdom she has.

Rejoice in the time that Sadie has spent with you, and for what she has taught you about life.

Thanks guys

this shit sucks, it was just last summer that I had to put down my black lab (13). I will be getting another pup for sure, what with the rehab going in down the road and all. I should be able to get the vet up by the end of the week.

My deepest sympathy to you. This is such a tough thing. I know sometimes I love my dog alot more than other things in my life. I don't want to be in your shoes right now, but I know you will do the kindest thing that is possible. Good luck my friends..

I got a hold of the visiting vet and made the appointment:-( Thank you for all of your support, it really does help. She really doesn't seem to be in any pain per se other than her hips don't work anymore and she quit eating, I have found that when they quit eating, it's the end of the road.

I learned a valuable lesson from my Dad many years ago, we had a St Bernard who was way beyond his expiration date 11 or 12 I believe.
He couldn't get up (hips were shot like Sadie, common problem with big breeds) but Dad waited 'till the bitter end to have him put down, to me that seemed boarder line inhumane as that dog was clearly in pain and I think Dad learned his lesson as did I, there is no use prolonging the inevitable......

My brother also had a little 'rat' dog named Humbee that he loved to death, dog was ancient (not sure how old, 13-14 ish) he spent thousands in vet bills trying to keep that dog alive and an obviously unscrupulous vet was happy to take his money, someone should have sat him down and said "look dude, pup is old and ain't gonna make it" but that ain't what bro wanted to hear.
So I guess the moral of this story is to take action when it becomes obvious that your pet has reached 'the slippery slope' because it ain't 'gonna get any better.

No doubt, I cried after my dog rex was hit by a truck. There is no stonger bond between any two people/animals than a bond between man and his dog.....although husband and wife come close...hehe....but there is just something about a dog that just makes you one happy sucker. God blessed man when he put mans best friend on earth with us. And my God watch over Sadie in her new home. I hope things are ok in the Hamp home, our best wished and thoughts go out to you and yours!!

Hemp I know the pain oh to will,it started when I was little mom and dad took me to get a pup said I went right over to the boxer pup and pick it out said we were like best friends then one day they had to tell me she was hit by a car.when my son was a baby got him a pup sad it started to having blood come from it mouth took it in doc said it had some thing that would not go a way I could spend money on it but it would still pass,I hate to pay for it to be put down and pick up the puppy when I got off my of Con job (hard to hide the tears all day) then dug a hole but the hardest was telling my little boy that his first puppy was not coming back................... :>(

Sadie is gone, I went

out to the garage to check on her right after my mouse post and she was D.O.A, just got done burying her, she will be missed. I am kind of relived actually and I hope she is as well, nothing worse than seeing a friend suffer.
I intend to get back in the saddle as it were and head down to the humane society tomorrow or the next day and have a look...

in the loss of a noble life companion. I am certain the Almighty gave us these wonderful creatures to teach us what unconditional love is, and what it can do to uplift our lives. That is why the loss is so painful---unconditional love is honest, pure and rarely experienced in any other way.

Rest in Peace, Oh noble canine....................
