The Scope Of This Site

I have been gonna from this site for a little over a year and when I clicked on the "community" button to see some topics, I was treated to a worst fear.

76 new topics under "Off Topic"
33 new topics under "Political"
23 new topics under "Guns"
20 new topics under "Intros"
3 new topics under "Tactics"
3 new topics under "Site News"

I go to the pictures and damn near every other time i hit the random button to see a "random picture" its a naked chick(not a bad thing, just wrong place) and sometimes not even a gun in the pic.......

Now, keeping in mind that this site is called GunsLot.Com, someone mind telling me what these bits of information tells us?

First off, howdy.
as for your worst fears, I was told, this is like your favorite bar, where you come to enjoy company and discuss whatever.
And as Runaway says, we got ADD pretty bad sometimes.
"off topic" seems to be where all discussions go anyway.
76 "off topic"
59 for "political", "guns", "tactics"
Thats a better ratio than I would have expected.

the fact that "guns" are third is the point, and what is above "guns" is another, and that site feed back only had 3

My thoughts........

There are around 30 ish regulars that belong to the little "club" we got
going on here and I enjoy hanging out with them. Scott, I can appreciate
your wish for a more "pure" gun site but that is one of the things that I like
about this site, nobody riding your ass if you go off topic like most other
sites I have experienced. As far as the chicks, personally I can take em' or
leave em' I like a nice pair of tits as much as the next guy.

I think Gunslot has the potential to have something for everyone, plenty of
space for the "hardest of the hardcore" gun enthusiasts to buy test and
report on various fire arms and room for people like myself who love guns
but buying the latest and greatest is just not in the budget.

I think it would be a shame if this site lost its current "atmosphere", there are
plenty of other gun sites that lack the "flavor" found here........Just my two
cent's.....

I can appreciate your argument, I have not been here for a year and i am sure things have changed a bit, just thought I would put this out there and see how others felt. To get a general consensus of how this site has aged. It may not be my "vision" of GunsLot.com but it is obviously the "vision" of those who have stuck around and didn't have jobs, school, and a life. haha just messing. So well put hampster, but keep your two cents...i got a dime!

Don't mean to be confrontational... I've enjoyed reading your posts these past 6 months are so.. but ah.. if its your concern about the site is so elevated.. why were you gone for so long..

For what its worth I've gone to the archives of three of our top posters and from the last page fwd looked at all that's been posted since the start of gunslot.. Sort of a historian bent, this took me almost three weeks in the case of Sam.. So i really do have a feeling of how the site has changed since its inception..

Again that sounded a bit more adversarial than i feel.. Fact is were all a bunch of alpha males, we relate well, yeah the skin thing comes up, but i notice more discussion of "values" in the past six months than in the initial year..

With out question we still focus on Guns first, but i think we have a lot of politics and humor.

The major thing is this site is real important to about 12 of us who never miss a day and spend a good 2 to 4 hrs a day on it.. Sam and Reap do an outstanding job of keeping out trolls deleting bad posts, and guiding with out intervention..

Guess this site really reflects the membership, so if you want to push it more towards guns.. great that's the common denominator here..your as all our posts guide what the site is..

I've said it before and i'll say it again. I came here to talk guns. I've stuck around to talk guns. I come back here to talk guns. I personally dont mind if discussions get a little off topic, but if they start talking about the weather on a particular day in a particular region... I'll remove it because people will have to sift through that B.S for years to come. I too have noticed that this site has shifted away from gun discussions, which is what it was built for. Whether that good or bad, everyone can judge for themselves. There are still quite a few good people who frequent the site, but the discussions have become a bit one sided

Well it is truly good to hear that people are liking the site out in the open. However, when I announced I was back, I had a more then a few messages from people sent to me mentioning things that sounded shitty or were reminiscent of the older days when we started to lose allot of the members due to nothing but political discussions and personal bickering.
With this in my inbox, I thought I would give a place for these voices to be heard but I see they will not be brought out in the open so I will continue on with my path with the guns and you all keep enjoying the site you have created.

Everything i have in my pocket "PLUS" give odds that your right.. BS in this case is 100% obvious.. And being polite calling it BS.. That's one of the main things we all agree on.. If you say it.. You can take it as a fact.. No question as to the veracity of it.. All of us regulars have no use for statements that do NOT meet that criteria.. I know if ANY of you guys makes a statement its a fact.. Also know when somebody's blowing smoke.. you call em like you see em cause your right..

but and this may be totally off base...but maybe not. To me, there are only a handful of people with great knowledge of guns and tactics, yourself included. I think you contributed on that front and when you left, a lot of input went to. Runs has contributed quite and bit and of course, there are some old guys here that also have a lot of knowledge. Some people don't have the knowledge about firearms or tactics, so I think a lot of times they simpley read those posts and try to glean the information from the 'experts', but maybe don't feel comfortable contributing. I include myself in this group...with some background from the military...so while I don't consider myself a complete novice...I have actually gotten a lot of useful information from the site concerning guns. Politics is front and center buddy because our country is being sold down the river by the Liberals...and that will greatly affect our Second Amendment rights...So, as I see it, it's all good man. By the way...Welcome Back! Where are you now and what are you doing? Get to posting some new gun information, we are counting on you!!! Haha.

I'm on the site every day. I truly enjoy the give and take on all kinds of subjects - if I didn't, I wouldn't be on the site so much. The many, many people who are on so often obviously enjoy the site the way it is.
If you know of a website that is "pure" in regards to guns and closely related subjects, please let us know what it is. I'd like to visit that site also for information and edification. I subscribe to several gun magazines every month for that reason, and enjoy them. If there are articles about subjects about which I have no interest I just skip the articles.
I also skip posts appearing on Gunslot that concern themselves with subjects about which I have no interest. I won't bother to list these subjects, because that would be of no interest to anyone but myself, and to list them would be an impolite disservice to my online friends here.
I would submit that if Gunslot were limited to a "pure" website, many if not most members would leave. The site would dwindle to a few purists "preaching to the choir". I believe that this would be a grievous loss.
Gunslot is great as it is.

Not only "well", but also clear, concise and close to as accurate as one can get, when describing how a large, multifaceted "animal" like this site operates. The site does seem to have something for almost everyone--even an old fart, like me!! That is part of the interesting developmental serendipity of the site, despite what Quinton and Marvin apparently intended, originally.

Hey man

I hate that guy...but good to see you back, good luck in school...GI Bill? What a great deal eh?
How is Michigan? I hear there are horrible problems there with no sign of improvement. Since you mentioned not enough gun information. Here is my latest purchase:

http://www.gunslot.com/pictures/springfield-armory-emp-40-sw-caliber

I haven't shot it yet...was suppose to last time home, but some family problems kept me from picking up the gun. It's in Arizona at the gun range where I shot before. I actually shot the gun while in Thailand and was thoroughly impressed with it. My very first shot at 15 yards was dead center and it was a rental gun at a shithole range in Pattaya...so, I read up on it and decided it would be a great concealed carry gun. I will pickup in June and shoot, then post more.

I also talked with the lady who owns the range in Tucson...she told me that I would be very happy with this gun and she has heard nothing but good things about it. Since I am on this, you can give your opinion on this also. I want a .45 as well, but was looking at Kimbers. She told me she didn't like them and from what I have read on them...some people absolutely love them and others absolutely hate them...there seems to be no middle ground. Let me know what you think, would appreciate your input.

I think passion one for a lot of us is our love for guns.. I will never forget opening that Stevens single shot .22 Christmas morning 1958. We lived in the country out side of Peoria Ill, and while i had owned a pellet gun, this was my first firearm.. Also remember i was not allowed to buy LR bullets for same till the following may when i was 11.

I've posted pictures of 10 or 11 of the guns i own and a representation are two of those i collect..(S&W Victory model) and yep i wouldn't own anything i wouldn't shoot..

Shooting is one of the reasons we live where we do.. We discovered our area before retirement and the fact that i have a "range" inside 15 min is really important to me..I was at this same range yesterday.. Pictures of all are posted.

I also enjoy the commodity of those who enjoy the sport, and respect what weapons are capable of.. I'm a Vietnam Vet, but was in no danger during my time overseas.. That being said i dont know how many of you have been shot at, or fired a round at another. I have been shot at.. and I did carry a shotgun on to two prison yards in the process of putting down disturbances.. in one event i discharged same to gain control of a sittuation.. (not directed at an Inmate) during two decades with the Department of Corrections that was the only time i had to fire a weapon.. Tho i not only qualified, but as a range officer trained our Staff in use of force.. handguns (revolvers then Glocks) 12 gauge and Mini 14..

Guess my point is some of us have actually "USED" them, and it's nice to have a bit of humor and political discourse to go with the subject..

but is it what marv and quin created it to be? Just a question to ponder... how can we make it better, and allow it to grow? There are about 20-30 regular posters on this site. How are sites like (cough) ar15.com, hkpro.com, ak47.net, etc. able to have daily posts in the thousands, especially when marvin and quinton do such a good job of search engine optimization? After all, I have a feeling that 95% of our members found this site by searching a gun topic on a search engine. I love coming here to B.S, but when I find myself with a really technical gun question, I sometimes find myself going to competitive sites because I know I will generally will get a faster, more accurate response. Not to say that there aren't members here that are very knowledgeable, because there are. I would love to find a way to entice people who have a wealth of firearm knowledge to come here and stay, and not be driven off by random conversations and political discussions. I think there is a medium somewhere in between where we can still have the bar atmosphere, but also create insightful gun discussions which will help recruit a larger user base of people who happen to search for key terms associated with the site.

Good point.
I like it here, that's why I am here.
I can't imagine looking at thousands of posts all about one particular subject (AR), just as I cannot imagine thousands of pictures of the same woman holding my interest.
Guns? Of course, ammo too.
Weather, beer, women, trucks, travel.
Yep, I like it here.

Just so we are clear

I like the site the way it is and enjoy reading it when I come into work...could there be more info on guns...probably, but I like the people and I like the content enough to have stuck around since Aug 2008...but I agree, too many pics of Greasy's grill...I am jealous!!!

As you said yourself though...if you have a more technical question you go somewhere else. So you go where you think you will find the best answer, that's the American way brother. This site is a reflection of it's members, so I don't see a real problem. Why don't you put up a poll, maybe to see how everyone feels? That would give you a real sense of how pervasive the sentiment is - that this site is not what it was setup to be? What is Marvin's and Quinton's input on the matter also?

We've been through some interesting times. We had the Little Dragon ne ka fiasco to get through. We've had some of our brothers get sick or need assistance, and we've pulled through to help each other out. We've had a few bearmeat assholes show up simply to disrupt the site. But all & all we haven't fought each other too much and we've pretty much all gotten along. And many of us have made solid contributions to this site.

I liken this place to a Steelers sports bar. There are Steelers sports bars in every major city because when the steel industry died, the workers were forced to leave Pittsburgh to find work. They are the Pittsburgh diaspora. The whole reason for the Steelers sports bars is to worship the Steelers and root for them when they play. But the thing is, the conversation can be about anything. It can be about women. It can be about politics. It can be about NASCAR. It can be about anything.

The bartender and the bouncers at Steelers sports bars do not force the conversation to be about the Steelers. As long as everyone behaves themselves and don't get into fights, the customers are left alone to talk about what they want to talk about. What a concept, eh?

In most bars the bartender doesn't own the bar. He is hired help. A good bartender can increase sales and draw more customers because people like his or her manner and enjoy being around him. A bad bartender can lower sales and chase away customers simply by being a surly asshole with a chip on his shoulder who doesn't know his place. SamD and Reaper are good bartenders. Sam is more out there and contributes more than anyone else to the site. Reaper works more behind the scenes to get the job done, but I've never felt either has abused their status. They are not heavy handed. Well, at least rarely so. That is an important and necessary trait.

It's the owners of this site who get to set the rules, so if Quinton and Marvin came on here and said, "These are the rules, period." I would read them and then decide whether I wanted to continue patronizing the establishment. And if I disagreed with their approach, I would tip my hat and say, "Adios." Users of this site gain a reputation for themselves based on what they say and do, how they handle themselves. No one is immune.

Hopefully Marvin/Quinton will be able to make this site pay for itself. I would be happy to contribute to that, but I'm not in a position to make that happen because I don't write their software. If they chose to sell ammo at good prices I would be the first to buy from them. If they made buying and selling as easy as gunbroker.com, I'd be perusing the listing on an everyday basis. If they asked for contributions I'd send in mine today.

I know that any time I have a gun question, I can get it answered here, whether it's what holster to buy or some arcane bit about the differences in ammo. If it's gunsmithing I know greasy knows. I like gunslot as it is. I don't mind if it evolves over time; that's a natural thing to happen. I do mind if the nature of the site changes abruptly. There are many gun sites on the net that talk exclusively about guns. I don't frequent them because, quite frankly, to confine the discussion to guns and guns only is boring as shit. I like to be entertained, too' and so far, I'm entertained here. That's what attracts people to this site. Several times recently we've had new people say, "I've browsed around and you guys sure seem to have a good time. I think I'll hang out here because you guys are funny as shit."

An important point to keep in mind is that it is the users of this site that make the site. The content of this site is driven by the users. Without greg and vac and grease and runs and ebear and a whole lot of other users, this site would be devoid of any content at all. If you want that to continue to happen, you need to treat users well.

So my suggestion is this: Unless someone is being intentionally disruptive, leave us alone to talk about what we want to talk about. There is plenty of room to discuss anything anyone feels like discussing. If you want to talk about guns, then talk about guns, for Christ's sake. There's nothing to prevent anyone from talking about guns. Just don't whine about the fact that people are talking about something else.

I believe that some of you are a bit racist...because it seems that when girls pics are posted, you shy away from Asians and when you do post Asians, they have dicks...this is not cool! I exempt SamD from this content because he always posts an asian here and there for me. Also, Schuyler...while I agree with your sentiment, you Sir have dropped a few pegs in my book for bringing up the Steelers, very classless thing to do Sir!

Guys.. I dont know how you all feel.. all i know is this site, and your camaraderie is honestly important to this boy, and I really think we guide the direction of the site by our posts, and there in is the genius of the whole thing..

If a post is memorable, or thought provoking.. It's responded to.. By the same token if a post is less than interesting to the "masses" then it has few responses..

Our own comments are much the same, in that a witty comment will get a lot of return humor.. and one that is less than memorable just sorta sits there.. I think we all know this, and have all had the "pleasure" of both responses.. That's the learning "curve" of the site.. We all sorta know each others likes and dislikes..Bottom line. This site sure works for me..

I don't really understand the "commercial" side of internet sites, outside of the obvious more hits more advertising dollars cost.. I do know that in the past the site did not have advertisers on it.. so thinking Q & M are doing something right if they can "NOW" bring in advertising $.

Vaq.. back at ya on the pm thing.. see ya all later.. i do have to either do some work or find a lawyer..

Hey guys, this is a great discussion. I haven't really taken too deep of a look into GunsLot for a while so here are some of my thoughts.

As of right now the banners you see at the top and right side are pretty much handling all the site's costs, so as that stands the site is not losing money. We are in the green :). As you have seen in the past we have tried selling firearms and a few other things. This worked alright, but was quite a bit of a management issue and we're not sure if that is the path we want to take, or perhaps maybe just not at this time. We didn't have enough orders to make it worthwhile to hire people on and scale it that way. We have also tried the gunbroker.com route of connecting buyers to sellers and that worked alright, but again, volume was a bit low. I like the idea of selling guns or ebaying guns, but it would have to have a decent amount of volume for us to really want to take it seriously. So until that point I am okay with just letting the site grow as is.

As far as the direction of the site goes I don't really care that much. I want the primary focus of the site to be about guns, but if you guys are into talking about other things I think that's great. A quick look in the guns forum shows that almost all of these topics are about guns which is great. The off topic section has discussions on things outside of guns which is great. And the political forum has political topics. It seems as far as the forums go they are organized appropriately and there doesn't appear to be any issues here.

Now as far as pictures go... This has always been somewhat of a grey area and I'm not really sure how to handle it completely. While I like the idea of being able to post whatever type of picture you want, I also do like keeping things gun related. We have loosely used the notion that if there's a gun in the picture it's okay and I guess that somewhat works. We have also used the flagging feature which at least will not allow younger people or non-members to see certain images without okaying it first, although not everything is caught by this.

I guess it somewhat depends on what people should expect to find when they click the pictures section on a gun site. Should they expect to see pictures of guns, pictures of women, or pictures of guns and women? Perhaps we should split the pictures section into 2 different sections? Maybe 1 that only has firearm pictures and another that has everything else?

I can set up a few polls for any questions and we can have a vote and see what people think. But I am okay with doing a bit of cleaning and changes to help keep everyone happy. YES WE CAN!

Also, if you guys think we need a new forum section or anything lemme know.

Thanks,
Quinton

No need to separate as 863 of my Pic posts were guns or related. And NO, none of those 863 was a pic of a girl with a gun.

Sheesh Schuyler.. It took me 25 min to put up four paragraphs of poorly worded blah blah blah..

Meanwhile, mike writes the following perfect prose in 5 min and i quote.

Schuyler; "If I disagreed with their approach, I would tip my hat and say, "Adios." Users of this site gain a reputation for themselves based on what they say and do, how they handle themselves. No one is immune"

That says it all.. Ok.. who else is having fantasy's about what ol Lyle's comments would be here..Now im laughing.. Love you guys like brothers... see ya all later..

Not trying to say I told you so...but, I mentioned a long time ago that pics of women or questionable content should be kept separate...it will still be available easily enough, but I have had these problems:

I view only at work here in Iraq, if I see a comment that looks funny or interesting, I click on it and lo and behold a topless girl, with gun or not pops up...of course, (after looking briefly), I need to close it out immediately. I keep waiting for one day when the network folks call me about the content of my surfing.

I just think we could maybe put those pics in a section that folks would need to go into to view and not necessarily out in the open...just my opinion, I don't have really have major problems either way...but viewing at work can sometime be problematic. But I know most are viewing at home so I am sure I am in the minority on this...

I haven't been here all that long so I
don't have much right to say much
about the quality of GUNSLOT.COM.

I have how ever enjoyed what time
I've been here very much.
When I come here depending on the
mood I'm in I read the index and if
I want to just read about guns, I go
to the guns section.

I think the layout is great. In my opinion
it functions as it should. There is a gun
section and an off topic (general bullshit)
section. What else could you want?

I went through my pics as I don't post post guns under guns.
I counted my pics re: guns, ammo and accessories. No I didnot count pics of girls with guns.
These I id and wrote something about.
There were 863 of them.
I think I have done my part admirally.
Now may we continue with our sight and just enjoy ourselves!

Can you at least let us choose what's on the grill for the pics? I mean, how about once per month put it for a vote! Or do Goat once per month in honor of us over in the shithole we lovingly refer to as Iraq? Come on man, play nice...Oh, or sheep in honor of eBear

I don't think there's a doubt in any of the regulars minds (that's scary territory) about brother Lyle being the one guy that when you open his comments, you have all your fingers and toes crossed, and say a little prayer first..

We love your goofy ass Lyle.. You, like all the regulars are important to the total.. How about posting a picture of a naked girl with a gun on the grill? Maybe 2 guns? And you could be basting her with a chamber brush coated with your "secret sauce".

My two cents
This site is my favorite place to log on. Am I a member of other sites? absolutely. Having a different section for the chic pics makes no difference to me, as long as the basic set up of the site does NOT change. We talk about guns all the time. There is a lot of history posted on this site. Whether it be war or gun related I enjoy all of it. I am very happy with the rules, the Prez, and especially the friends I have here. These people have made me laugh, cry, and have deep concern for people I have never met in person. This means people on this site tell how they are feeling regardless of whether it is good or bad, it's human. There have been some hiccups over the last 6 months but they have been rooted out and dealt with successfully. If this site changes I will look somewhere else that I can have this kind of interaction with people of all walks. In the beginning I was posting pics of just hot women. I was respectfully reminded of the rules. I actually appreciated the redirection, focusing on guns. There are lots of guys here with a great deal more knowledge about guns than myself. I also come here for the political insight I gain from our members. If you haven't been here a year, then why are you complaining?

It seems everyone else has put their 2 cents in so I might as well also. I'm pretty new to both this sight and to guns&shooting. I have spent a lot of time online learning about guns and shooting In the past few months, most of it right here on gunslot. I love this site, even though it has been the cause of more than one disagreement with the wife, mostly about me spending too much time at the computer and not enough time on the honey do list. I have learned more and laughed more since I became a member than I have in a very long time. The regulars on this site are great and I will be comming here as often as I can as long as they are around.

Nothing is as risky as certain failure.

SITE

I found Gunslot relatively recently. The reason I log onto and participate in (posting content and answering posts) here so frequently is that it fills an important niche, and that niche (for me) does relate directly to the content posted.

I've participated in several very large related-content sites for many years (glocktalk, tacticalforums, lightfighter, getoffthex, IAA/CCA, IALEFI, etc.). There are large, broad, gun-based websites like GT that have definitely 'gone family' (cited 'family atmosphere' as the reason for restricting pic posting, language, avatars, etc.)--much of the fun is gone, at least for me. There are large, niche sites (military, police, competition, etc.) that have very few rules and subsequently have either dedicated NSFW sections or periodic troubles with posters/content--I rely on them mainly for feedback by vetted end-users of equipment and tactics. There are also very narrow, rather sites which deal mainly in information dissemination and professional associations--I rely on them to help stay current on very specific topics and trends. I haven't found many sites like gunslot, and the ones that come close are either very very shortlived or very sparsely populated.

Gunslot is where I don't worry nearly as much about the language used, pics posted or views/topics discussed. Segregating or filtering content makes sense and is fully carte blanche for the founders/managers of the site. That said, if chick pics were verboten here I wouldn't be on here nearly as much. I like posting and viewing them, and frankly detest the attitudes on other sites whereby a person is made to feel bad for looking at pictures that rightly appeal to them, or is dressed down for expressing frank opinions on a topic or picture.

So, in summary, bravo Gunslot--I wouldn't change a thing. This seems to be more of a 'friends' site, and that is one thing that separates it from many others.
