Minnesota: Taxpayer-facilitated Sharia-compliant mortgages
How does it work? "The state buys a home and resells it to the buyer at a higher price. The down payment and monthly installments are agreed to up front at current mortgage rates."

The state buys the home and makes the Sharia-compliant arrangements with the Muslim buyer. As Jihad Watch reader Paul, who kindly sent me this story, asks: "Establishment clause, anyone?"

"New Islamic mortgages now available in Minnesota," by Jessica Mador for Minnesota Public Radio, March 1 (thanks to Paul):

For many Minnesota Muslims, it's been virtually impossible to buy a home, because Islamic law forbids the paying or charging of interest. To help close the home ownership gap among Muslim immigrants, the state's housing agency is launching a new program offering Islamic mortgages.
Minneapolis, Minn. — Islamic law does make exceptions to the ban on interest, if one's family is at stake. But the exceptions are open to interpretation and for many observant Muslims, conventional mortgages are strictly taboo....

The program is targeted at low-to-moderate income families. Qualified applicants have to complete first-time home buyer education classes. The goal is to help Muslim home buyers build wealth and reap the benefits of home ownership.

Here's how the mortgage, known as Murabaha financing or "cost plus sale," works:

The state buys a home and resells it to the buyer at a higher price. The down payment and monthly installments are agreed to up front at current mortgage rates.

The deal is identical to a thirty-year fixed-rate loan, except there's no additional interest, because the higher up front price factors in payments that would have been made over the life of a traditional mortgage.

A handful of private banks and lending institutions offer Islamic mortgages in the U.S., but Minnesota Housing is the first state agency to offer such a product. The program is the brainchild of Hussein Samatar, director of the African Development Center in Minneapolis.

"The process is different, but the outcome will look the same," Samatar says. "We wanted to be as conventional as possible, while respecting the tenets of Islam.

Samatar, who used to work for Wells Fargo, tried for years to launch Islamic financing. He says the fact that Minnesota Housing has agreed to participate is a nod to the Muslim community's growing economic power....

Catholic church slams new teaching code which would force Christian schools to actively promote Islam
And now for some rare, un-dhimmified behavior -- behavior that would make the Archbishop of Canterbury blush for shame: "Catholic Church slams new code of conduct forcing teachers to promote Islam and gay rights," by Simon Caldwell for the Daily Mail, March 2:

The Roman Catholic Church has severely criticised a proposed new code of conduct for teachers which it says will force Christian schools to actively promote Islam and gay rights.

The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has warned the General Teaching Council, by the professional regulatory body, that many teachers will quit the profession because they will not be able to accept the revised code of conduct in good conscience.

Their advisers say the code would also seriously undermine the religious character of church schools by imposing on them a hostile form of secular morality.

The legally-binding code would discriminate against Christian teachers in recruitment and in the classroom, they say.

Principle 4 of the code demands that teachers ‘proactively challenge discrimination’ and ‘promote equality and value diversity in all their professional relationships and interactions’ before they can be registered.

It means that campaigners can complain if teachers fail to observe the new demands and that teachers and schools can be punished if a complaint is upheld.

Oona Stannard, head of the Catholic Education Service, an agency of the bishops’ conference, told the GTC in a written submission that ‘there was an understandable fear that the call to “proactively challenge discrimination” could be used to oppose faith schools per se, and the rights that they have in law, for example, to select leaders who are of the faith’.

‘This anxiety extends similarly to the direction to “promote equality”,’ Miss Stannard said.

‘It would be unacceptable to expect anyone to be required to promote something contrary to their own faith beliefs and, indeed, it would not be possible for a person of faith to promote another faith – this is a matter of conscience.’...

A very logical position. Ask any Muslim.

MILF clashes with government troops in Philippines
"Peace talks with the rebels collapsed late last year after two MILF commanders led their men in attacking several mostly Christian towns and provinces on Mindanao island." Displacing half a million people.

Filipino Jihad Update: "Muslim Clashes In Philippines Kill 10," from AFP, March 2 (thanks to Twostellas):

COTABATO, Philippines (AFP)--At least ten people have been killed during clashes between Muslim rebels and troops in two days of fighting in the restive southern Philippines, officials said Monday.
Troops clashed with 30 Moro Islamic Liberation Front, or MILF, rebels outside the town of Kabuntulan on Mindanao island Monday, leading to eight enemy casualties, said local army spokesman Col. Jonathan Ponce.

On Sunday, two soldiers were killed in a clash with another MILF unit on the island, the military headquarters in Manila said.

The soldiers had been sent to check on reports that MILF rebels were harassing civilians in Kabuntulan when they were ambushed....

Peace talks with the rebels collapsed late last year after two MILF commanders led their men in attacking several mostly Christian towns and provinces on Mindanao island.

The attacks left over half a million people displaced, and scores of civilians dead and came after the courts stopped a proposed land deal that would have given the MILF control over a large area of territory.

The government said it is prepared to resume talks with the MILF, and has replaced its peace negotiating panel with a new set of officials....

Why is the Filipino government still disposed to negotiate with the MILF after how it has acted? Does no government anywhere have any spine?

Hah hah. The MILF

I know a few MILFs I'd like to resume talks with.
