Police are investigating a shooting that happened at The Greens in Fayetteville early Sunday morning.

They say one person is dead after allegedly breaking into an apartment.

Fayetteville police say that a man crawled through a window at the green apartments, and was confronted by the homeowner who was armed with a handgun.

The homeowner asked him to leave and he did, but a few minutes later the intruder went back through the same window and the homeowner shot him.

Police say the intruder lived in the same apartment complex and was possibly trying to get into the wrong apartment.

Eyewitnesses tell 5NEWS the man who was shot was a regular at a nearby bar.

They say he has a history of losing his keys after drinking, so he would often leave his window open at his apartment to climb into his house.

"Well if it was a case of self-defense then yes, he would have a right to shoot him, but I think to shoot somebody you know, I think it'd have to be a necessary means," said one neighbor.

Police have not yet released the name of the victim or suspect.

whether he knew the man or not or whether the man was a drunk trying to get in his own home or not, based on the story as i see it here looks like a guy defending his home to me.maybe over reacted, maybe not,but the dead man shouldn't have been sneaking through windows at night.he won't do it again thats for sure.sad if all it was was a drunk trying to go home, but he's responsible for himself and his actions.sounds to me like his actions got him shot for being a stupid dumb dumb.

Tis a sad story. If it was a case of dumb drunk man, he must have had WAY to much to drink, and I wonder how he got home? Sure hope he didnt drive that drunk. Shoot, he had a warning, and then came back yet again......thats asking for it if you ask me. Idk how you get your own home confused....no matter how drunk I get, I know where my apt is. It might be a little of drunkman and theif combined, maybe the drunkness gave him some courage to try again....also wonder if the intruder had any weapons.....it didnt so there were, but didnt say there werent. Like to get a follow up on this.,

Sounds like there's more to the story then they are releasing...I do agree that if i gave you a break once, not a second. Could be he was convinced that he was going into his own home, confrontation broke out and bang. would not blame him at all, and it would not matter if i knew him or not.. threat is a threat... still bad.

Very Sad

Need more of the story. Threats made during second entry? Confrontation,Fight? When some folks drink they feel 2ft taller and never back down. Sad for the shooter, his life changed forever.

I'm ready to fight when one gets too close.
The shooter could have been scared, BANG !
If the first encounter was cordial the shooter could find himself in trouble.
I dunno, like you, I'd have to be there.

DC, yup

Drunks are unpredictable in some circumstances and situations.

One way or the other, the shooter is going to spend allot of time reflecting upon it.

a man has to hold his word, hold his beliefs, and hold a good sight picture.
