30 06

You can simply not go wrong with the old 06.. the case capacity has long been the issue with accuracy as compared to the 308, but that issue has been resolved. You can shake the 06 and hear the powder moving around. That makes it a somewhat less efficient cartridge in tradional loads vs the 308 but the extra capacity is why the 06 is more versatile then the 308 especially with heavier loads. 06 loads can be loaded much hotter and can approach the low end performance of the 300 magnum. The 308 is an excellent cartidge as well. The 308 has many virtures in its own right. Short action making for a slightly smaller and lighter rifle, very efficient, and very accurate. It probably has a slight edge in inherent accuracy which is why it is often chosen for sniper applications but I have seen examples of 06s that were its equal. I believe the 06 is under rated and can pretty much do anything required of a rifle. Of course the magnums add range, flatter shooting, and more power, but most don't really need that level of performance and it comes with a price..recoil, cost, and such.

06' is

cheaper ammo due to the popularity of the 308 as well, put the 30-06' in a Howa bolt action and you will have an inexpensive, quality, rifle equal to any occasion next to a 308 Remy 700,IMHO

06's...

I reacently was looking to purchase a 30-06. Looking for an inexpensive one to use on the ranch, and had a hard time finding many options. Most of the gun dealers in the area no longer carry them. They say that with all the "newer" rounds avalible that there is no demand for them.

No demand for .30-06? I don't want to live in this world.

Seriously though, that surprises me. I see .30-06s all over. Most of my hunting buddies use .30-06. Look at the Savage

huh?

Methinks your gun-counter buddy is trying to sell you one some new ubershortfattallthindoesitallmagnum.

The -06 is alive and well in my AO, just not in sniper guise.

.223 and even .243 see more issue in that role than -06 has for many years. Almost anyone running a long-action precision boltgun on 2-leggers is using .300WM+.

An old sporterized 03A3 was my first gun, and still gets drug out of the safe 1-2 times a year.

How are you this fine morning? I agree w/ you about the '06. My favorite rifle cartridge. You have an 03 Springfield huh? I'm jealous. Good rifle.

Let everyone else jump to the newer expensive rounds and smile your butt off every time you pick up a Box of 06 and the price has dropped another dollar!

My brother and I have a Howa 30/06 bolt gun which is actually pre-Howa. For get the name of the company in Japan which made it that Howa bought out but it is a shooter. It does have a scope on it, but with the iron sites you can drop a man sized target with ease at distance.

Boggling how they push newer and better when it really is just cost over kill for the need at hand.

No sir, he fell into that bullet... Never argue with a stupid person. They'll just drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!!
