Well for one I am in college,I decided that teachin is not for me. I am a history nut but I dont think I would make a good teacher. So I switched to construction and I am now in welding at the moment. Next semester I am taking classes in electricity and plumbing and carpentry to get certified and me an my buddy will be opening a business. Plus I also have grown up a lot. Im not a cocky punk like I used to be during my previous run on gunslot. I did deserve every bit of what happend to me. All I can do is beg your all forgiveness and see if I may return here as a full time member. But I want to re-earn all my points the legit way by working to get them with legit posts and research. Also thought I would let ya know that I plan to stick with college and I will finish as I promised so many of you. I hope you guys are doing well and also let you guys know that I am well.

Yup there is worse people than me who could sign up here. I made mistakes and paid for them. And now I can start over with a clean slate litteraly. I was and still consider my self as a gunslot original. June of next year will make my 3rd year as a member here if I get to stay when Greasy and reaper make the final call.

I believe I will stick to construction. I like the hands on work.

What college are you attending? What's your major? What's the course work like? What degree are you working toward?

(Schuyler, I know that the last question was grammatically incorrect, but phrased properly it sounds rather absurd to most people.)

Who chooses construction in the worst building economy is the history of our country besides the Great depression?

Get your 4 year degree in anything other than construction and you can get jobs... The degree is what is most important, not the field of study itself...

Just my humble honest opinion...

Construction

I chose this as I felt that I need more hands on experience in the real world. And well construction means I can travel a help build new things. Who knows but someday I could be part of building something amazing. My humble opinion is that the world needs more builders.

A very admirable aspiration. Personally, knowing what you know, & having access to the experienced & knowledgeable people that you do. I would listen to them, & stay as far away from construction as I could get. Just my humble 2 shinny ones worth!!!!

but it'll turn around at some point. And if not, then fuck it. Lock and load, wait for the collapse I guess.

And as for construction if the economy goes to hell even more then whats stopping me from goin to college ans trying something else? I understand fully what you and larry are saying but I think I will stick to construction for now.

The good thing about already having the stuff is that someone has to come get them as opposed to just removing them from store racks.

right now

construction sucks, sure there is gonna be some small framing and remodeling, which might be perfect for squirrel to learn on,hopefully so,but it's a tough racket,as a trade an electrician makes the best $$,there's lots of them sitting on the bench down at the union hall right now in practically every state. If you get into residential framing carpentry you had better be fast and efficent, most homes are framed in 10 days( typical trac home, not custom,i've built multi-million dollar homes that took 2 years to finish).and if you do a custom home you had better do it on T& M,otherwise your gonna get fucked.Residential right now pays about 3.50 a sq.ft.framed here, probably less in VA,but for that 3.50 they are also having a all terrain lift on site, and i guarrantee that's a money loosing proposition at that price, guys are just scratching by,trying to keep a crew together for when it does open up a bit and then they will be ready to throw bodies on the jobsite, not hire unless they have to,and if they have to then it's for the weak minded with a strong back that's gonna get the job, cannon fodder.Just sayin.

commercial is way worse off, reports i have read stretch recovery out to 2012 before an improvement there, but it is construction that turns the economy, not the housing market, that's just an indicater.

Squiggy and the Trades

Learn spanish if you plan to frame houses and a tan may help as well. I am with Ivan on the trades. I work in the Commercial/Industial HVAC controls business and I can't (read - don't want to learn)communicate to most people on a job site. From dirt to roof they are all of Latin origin. Most supers are becoming the Lats that can speak both. Learn to weld which is becoming a lost art. Hang iron or run a crane. Or if you have half a brain become an HVAC controls tech. Low voltage so relatively safe and it is only becoming more and more prominent. LEED, new energy standards, monitoring and payback, performance verification, 3rd party commissioning... The list goes on. Most don't have degrees other than Microsoft cert and some IT with maybe a 2 yr electronics degree. I have hired many right out of the service. One Girl repaired night vision devices at Ft. Bragg. She became a great fire alarm tech. Another was a nuclear tech of some sort. Fire and Security is another sector the gov't is only going to tighten the screws on as well. That means jobs. The possibilities are endless. LBC makes a good point about xray tech or lab tech.

My oldest boy

wanted to be a mechanic like me, so one night I got the OK & took him to work with me.
Time to go home I changed & put my dirty's in a garbage bag. When we got home I told him to open the bag & take a whiff. He is now doing computer IT work for one of the largest law firms in DC. He said "It stinks" & It tired him out just watching me do my shift. At least we now know he does have a brain!!!

got his permit to drive this morning. He walks up after thumbing through the book and passes. I study for 3 days and struggle. He scored higher on SAT in 8th grade than I did as a senior... I worry that he is to smart and will be one of those that drifts if he doesn't find his niche. Or he will be a lawyer. Shoot me now - ugh!!

& so will you. Been there done that. If we absorbed & retained ANYTHING, it would be that you CANT make them. You can do everything "right" as they say, & love em with everything you got but if they decide there gonna do it, guess what? there gonna do it. Come hell or high water.
this goes for both good & bad. Hang in there Manu, you & him will be OK.
