So as you all already know, the US is exchanging spies who have been living a double life here for 4 spies in Russia, from what I've read mostly ex-soviet military. What's everybodies thoughts?

On one hand they say this is a decade old investigation, then .. whoops were going to send them out of the country NOW... This is the quickest turn around on record.. Something is sure being swept under the rug here..

Who knows, maybe its a good thing we don't know the full story... Guessing some things we shouldn't know about..

Maybe there intentionally keeping a lot of people in the dark on what the real problem is. There is always 2 sides to everything. In this case one side is for the powers tha be know and the other is for the press.

The 4 we're getting gave us some good stuff. The 10 they are getting didn't get much, if anything. In terms of "pounds of good shit" the 4 are worth more than the 10. The 4 we get are:

Igor Sutyagin, a Russian disarmament researcher convicted of espionage in 2004;
Sergei Skripal, a former colonel in Russia’s Military Intelligence Directorate (GRU);
Gennady Vasilenko, a former KGB officer and head of security for major Russian television station Alexander Zaporozhsky, another former SVR colonel.

What will the "former" SVR people do when they get here?
Will they come to the US, or stay in Europe?

I'm a skeptic

I don't believe that these three people are truly "former" SVR agents/officials/functionaries. I hope that the CIA keeps close tabs on them so that we will know where they are and what they're doing.

True Ecaman...you never know, the Russians could have flipped one of them or all of them back to their side to send over here to get information. I've heard it happened before.

These guys provided the US with significant intelligence information that broke several spy rings in the US. I subscribe to stratfor.com, a kind of private CIA type organization that provides daily updates on a number of topics. Usually, they have a copyright notice and deny me permission to reprint on the web. If I did do that, they could easily catch me and deny my subscription. All our posts are catalogued by Google. All you have to do is type in a sentence or two and it will pop right up. That's how I catch a lot of posts here that are not attributed so that it looks like someone's own work. Sometimes stratfor does allow redistribution, and when this is of interest to us here, I will do so. I thought in tis case I could get away with posting the names, since those are freely available from sources other than stratfor on the web. One of these guys exposed a spy ring working inside British intelligence. Another led to the exposure of Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen.

Even if you take the position that these Russians are secret double agents, it doesn't matter. They are "in from the cold" and will not be able to work clandestinely in the field again. My guess is they will get jobs with the government as "analysts." Further, this "spy swap" serves as a recruiting advertisement for both the CIA and the SVR because it shows that both agencies are ready to take care of their own. And because of this swap, both countries can put the matter behind them and not have it continue to be a point of tension. We can now pretend to get along and move to more substantive issues.

Spies

I think trading spies makes sense... We should try to get ours back, and what good are theirs to us at this point?

i agree with shuy

from what i heard it appears to be a better swap,albeit the fastest swap i have heard of,of course that's the medias fault,our fearless GOV has been tracking these 10 russkies for a couple years or more.Now they have freed up some agents to get serious about finding Osama,Elvis,and DB Cooper.

He was a year or two ahead of me. I have an annual with a couple of pictures of him. Wilson High School. Tacoma, Washington. His mother was a secretary at the University of Puget Sound, which was two miles from my house.

We had adjacent paper routes, too. And we went to the same University, U of Dub in Seattle. I graduated in 1971 and he graduated in 1972. So he must have been screwing around a bit, killing people and stuff.

He could have been in my Algebra 3 class, and I may have bumped into him in the hallway, but we never actually formally met.

That sig is for LLE's benefit, since he was informing us of his many psychology degrees. I was just trying to put that into perspective.
