I'm getting ready to take the NC conceal and carry class, and I need some help as to what handgun is an ideal one to carry. It will be for protection more than anything, so it does not need to be super fancy or anything. However, I definitely want a dependable gun with good stopping power that's fairly compact. As far as cost, I'd like to keep it under $500. Thanks for your help.

check with the class first and see if it is like in New Mexico: qualify biggest caliber you think you will ever want to carry...i.e. qual a 45 and you can carry 45 down to 22. If you qual a 22 and later want to carry a 9mm then you have to take class again to qual the 9mm. Here its $175 per class.
Borrow a friend's 45 and qual Then shop the piece you want. Taurus has a slew of very reliable and well priced conceal guns...take a gander at their web site: taurususa.com...

My wife and i both carry Walther P22's and love them. Remember PLACEMENT is key. and practice with 22's is a fraction of target practice with 45 or 9mm.

Here in AZ you can qual with anything. We had a guy qual with a damn blackpowder gun, for his permit. As for what to carry for defense, I have always spouted the 9mm, and will continue to do so until I die from not using enough gun. The 9mm has the benefits of being relatively inexpensive to practice with, low recoil to allow for faster follow-up shots, easy availability of ammo, and very effective caliber with good ammo.

dumb ccw laws

yeah that is pointless that you have to take the class again. in virginia you can take a class on the computer to qualify for ccw. i dont reccomend it for people who have nevr been around guns before but i took it and it's not that bad. the only ccw law i think it retarded here is you cant conceal your weapon in a place that sells alcohol, but you can open carry!! i dont get that one nothing to get a drunks attention more then a visible handgun

in AZ you have to take an 8 hr. course. it mainly covers the use of lethal force. you also have to qualify with your gun. its very easy. I think we had to put 10 rds. in a large circle from 10ft. and 20ft. corky could do it. but they use it in court if you're ever involved in a shooting. We can't ccw in places who sell licquor, and I thought we couldn't open carry either. I'll check into that.

do you have to re-qualify everytime you buy a different caliber gun? i think thats what eric said he had to do where he is from? anyway, thats sounds like a good thing to do, especially for court purposes but for each caliber is a little extreme. just found out too that you cannot carry concealled in state parks but open carry is fine. how they come up with this?!!!

no, we just qualify once. you may have to qualify again when your permit expires, but I havn't gotten to that point yet. I still have a year left. if you qualify with a .22 and get involved in a shooting and use a .44mag and missed or hit something else, they will likely roast you in court. the purpose of qualifing is to show that you are proficient with the weapon that you will carry. I qualified with a .40, so its not that big of a deal if i carry a .45, and I can always carry smaller.

You can carry in markets and restaurants that sell alcohol and other similiar places, you just can't carry in a place that is a bar only. Also open carry is allowed here in Az.

just if you know anyone that needs it. save this link http://www.concealed-carry.net/index.php it only takes an hour and you print the certificate. i did this with my wife after i went to a class. figured i was going to show her everything anyway and it was cheaper.

that makes a good point and would probably be better to qualify with a higher caliber anyway i would think.

The only good thing about open carry is that if you accidentally expose your concealed gun, you won't be charged with brandishment or whatever the charge is for that crap.

A Glock 27. I carry one every day you can't go wrong, its small enough to conceal and has the stopping power to get the job done. Spend a little more and you'll be totally satisfied. Go Glock!

By handling it in a menacing manner with intent to convey a message of impending harm, you can go to jail. For instance, a man here was involved in a verbal altercation with another guy and made a comment to the effect of "we'll see" or whatever, went to the trunk of his car and pulled out a shotgun. he never pointed it, never said he was going to hurt anyone, just pulled it out of his car, looked at the other guy in a "menacing" manner, and was charged with whatever AZ has for that, brandishment, assault, whatever they do.

VA seem pretty good about CC, you can not carry into or onto any place that sells alcohol, or the normal schools, Fed. Buildings but can carry any where in your vehicle loaded. The process is simple enough you only need to show you have knowledge of handguns i.e. my service qualification score card. No finger prints a lot of forms $55.00 and if I remember 45 days waiting. I carry a Kei-Tec PF-9 small but effective.

check out springfield armory XD, they're a little over $500, but you get a lot of extras too. I have an XD compact .45acp with 4" barrel. It conceales easily and shoots great
